The Burgschänke is an old German name for a kneipe or otherwise commonly known as a pub. It's…read morelocated in a 700 year old barn and it's quite small. They can fit about 50 people in the bar and there is some outdoor seating with view of the beautiful castle next door and some nice manicured gardens. I was taken here by a colleague who knows the owners of this pub as well as the owners of the castle. The atmosphere here is fabulous and unless you knew this place existed you would probably not find it. Don't expect any English as your chances of finding this is pretty slim. They have a huge screen set up and showing the World Cup games and it was packed with locals tonight for the Germany game. They serve mostly beer and wine and some schnapps. The food menu is small and it's mostly things like cheeses, cold meats, breads and so on. I would love to come back here again and soak in the beautiful surroundings and the atmosphere.

Well something like that anyway. It is a Paffgen Kolsch house. The teeny tiny beverages were served to us by an amusing waiter who was clearly a bit of a character.

The bathrooms are exceptionally clean. However each time we went to the bar we were charged a different price for the same drinks, in addition my friend who speaks fluent German was charged less than myself... In all we paid 4 different prices for the same drinks that evening. I would also warn any women drinking here to be very careful with their drinks as a couple of local men bought us drinks which were spiked. Thankfully I didn't drink it but my friend was very ill for a few days as a result.

Came here during the wintertime and dined in the basement. We were surprised to find such a…read morespacious and interesting location. It definitely provided for a chill ambiance. The beer was obviously not bad and the sünner malzbier which I love was also great. Jaegerschnitzel was good. It's not as thin of a piece as I would have liked but that's personal preference. The other dish was not memorable at all. For the price which I remember as being not cheap but still reasonable, I wished I had just travelled elsewhere. We noticed too late that most other parties were only drinking and chatting without eating. It was worth a try and if I'm in a pinch to show someone a German brewery then I might take them there for some beer and maybe a schnitzel. They also offer brewery tours (might need to reserve that ahead of time) so that could be a nice combo. The atmosphere in the summer seems to be better too when the outside dining space is also opened. This is not a particularly child friendly location. There are steps around the dining area, and we were not offered a high chair.
