I was all set to go back to the hotel after a lovely evening of beers when I spotted gelato and dang it, I couldn't refuse. Lots of choices and for 9:00 on a weeknight, the place was busy. This little cafe is a highlight on trendy New Regent St. in Christchurch. From the photo op with the gorilla on the bench outside to the tasty ice cream decadence inside, it's an after-dinner delight for everyone. There's a bit of a queue to navigate in the evening, but it's worth the wait. And the service is good so the line moves relatively quickly. On our visit, we tried the Charlie's Choccy Cake, which is a hot chocolate cake with chocolate ganache with a scoop of ice cream of your choice and a dab of coconut yogurt. It was wonderful, and I'm glad we split it. It would have been too rich for one. It was less than $10 NZD per person, so it was well worth it. I hope we have the chance to try it again. read more

We were only in Christchurch for 8 days but we had gelato here almost every day. So awesome. The grandson had Superman chocolate. I had lemon - lime (and he ate half of it). It's fresh ingredients, service with a smile. And a wonderful gorilla to keep you company ina beautiful outdoor space. read more

After dinner, we headed back to New Regent Street to grab dessert at Rollickin Dessert Cafe. It's got a cafe vibe and layout to it but everyone comes here for their gelato. We dropped in on a Monday evening (around 7:15pm). There's a spacious upstairs area to lounge about along with the main floor and outdoor seats. Chill place to study (that cafe vibe I mentioned earlier). There were 11 flavours to choose from with three options: one scoop ($5.00 NZD), two scoops ($8.50 NZD) and three scoops ($10.50 NZD). Pricier than most places. FYI: the waffle cones aren't homemade. If you aren't feeling gelato, they have a small selection of pastries and drinks. - Two scoops ($8.50 NZD) - we went with pomegranate and berries for the top flavour, the girl next door (yogurt whipped with pomegranate gelato, sweet lemon and passionfruit curd) for the bottom. Don't see much pomegranate often but it was a winner. Sweet and bursting with fruity flavour. I wasn't a big fan of the girl next door but B liked it. Solid spot to grab gelato. Bonus, it's open everyday and late for after dinner dessert. read more

Delicious beyond belief. The quality of the cream is the best I have ever had. Smooth, silky, sweet, fresh cream. Vanilla beans. It was almost a divine experience. There is always a line going all the way outside to get their orders in. I wonder why. I would give this ice cream store ten stars if it is possible. What a cute little store with outdoor sitting, in addition to comfortable chairs inside the store. Interesting gorilla sitting outside on the bench and the hand-written menu items on the board. OH EM GEE. Do not be deterred by the line outside. It does move quickly and you will be rewarded with very tasty, creamy gelato. I am blown away and will continue to dream about the Breakfast of Chamipns - yogurt flavored gelato with blueberry and crumb topping. The yogurt gelato is outstanding. I came back two nights in a row and could've just had the breakfast of champs, but we also got a scoop of the lemon, lime and bitters and the salted caramel. The salted caramel is probably my least favorite of the three as it lacked depth of flavor. The caramel could've been caramelized longer. However I did love the mouthfeel of all - The gelato has just the right density and has a creamy mouth feel without feeling rich in a fatty way. Seriously, that gelato is so effing good. I contemplated getting a scoop to put in my hotel freezer and having it the next morning. I mean it is called breakfast of champions and it's yogurt-based right? Service is friendly and there is ample sitting outside to enjoy the Christchurch weather and ambiance. Blankets are provided at the door if it gets chilly. Not really getting the hype for this place. The hokey pokey tasted artificial and the texture was nothing at all like gelato. After trying a few other gelato flavors with the same assessment, we ended up getting the lime bitters sorbet instead, which despite its odd gummy texture was at least super refreshing and bitingly bitter, and the cone full of chocolate added a nice twist. The lady behind the counter was very sweet and I felt guilty letting on that I wasn't enjoying the things I was tasting. read more

This dessert restaurant has a nice atmosphere, in one of the remaining older neighborhoods in Christchurch. Popular, the line moved quickly. I had a mint chocolate chip cone, which was excellent with really good mint flavor. My wife was a bit disappointed with her Hokey Pokey as it didn't have much of the honeycomb crunch, making it basically a vanilla cone. We'd probably pay more attention to the scooping if we came back. There is more seating upstairs on the first floor. read more

This place is pretty cool vibes - I really like their presentation. We had the Xmas special, I think vanilla ice cream with marshmallow, chocolate and cherry(?) chunks. The best bits were the chunks, but the cherry was rly overpowering. Also: you can't pay with travel cards if the transaction is under $20NZ. I don't know if this is standard in NZ ~ perhaps fees are higher here ~ but it's typically a $10 limit in Aus, so that caught me off guard! read more

Super delicious gelato. After sampling a few items, ended up ordering a mint chocolate chip, which came with real mint in it! One of the girls managing the money portion of the counter wasn't super friendly, but the other girl who was helping us with the gelato was amazing. We were absolutely delighted to stumble across this popular store while wandering around Christchurch. They have a very tempting range of flavours so it was very hard to choose. We went back a couple of times and we liked all the flavours that we tried. We also enjoyed the caramel cookie slice. This is a great option for an after dinner treat! read more

Now THIS is some serious gelato, Folks! On a row of really charming small shops (microbrewery, whiskey & cocktail bar, clothes, etc) which is currently an island of reconstruction in contrast to earthquake destruction around it from the 2011 earthquake. Hand packed exotic flavors, and very ingenious dessert inventions in unusual and playful combinations. And a gorilla statue which sits in their nice patio out front with you as you watch the nicely restored trams make their stops on the stree. Charming charming charming. read more

We decide to check at this place when our restaurant waitress mentioned that they have really good ice cream. We were more encouraged when we saw a huge line at front of the ice cream place at 9pm! Great cafe for gelato, coffee, tea, or a dessert. They have a chocolate fountain where you can buy a "shot" that you can add to your gelato. They also had "mug cakes" which was a piece of cake heated in a coffee mug with a scoop of gelato on top. No international credit cards, only debit or cash.
