The trails are nice and wide and make it easy to get around other walkers. These trails are also long enough, that once you move away from the main trail that circles the pond (pink trail maybe??), unless you move over to Half Day Forest preserve (connected trails), you'll very rarely run into anyone else. The parking fills quickly at the Everett and St. Mary's entrance, but you can also park over at Half Day Forest Preserve off of Milwaukee and easily find your way to these trails with a short added mile of walking.

We paid a visit here as an enjoyable venue for getting in some fitness steps.  The daughter and her…read morefamily frequent various forest preserves, and she mentioned this one as a recent favorite.  I personally don't have a lot of forest preserve comparison data, but found the surroundings to be tranquil and uncrowded on a Sunday afternoon, the trails all graveled and well marked, existence of a couple of bridges, a good mix of sun and shade along the trails, and folks and their pets all well behaved and courteous.  Some folks were picnic'ing and there was also a wedding party photo shoot going on.  I'm not sure where this one ranks in acreage for a forest preserve, but there were plenty of trails (4 miles worth) to get in whatever mileage you might like.  So, I guess I'll go with an "it's a good as it gets" til proven otherwise!

The Sun Lake Forest Preserve is a wonderful outdoor area that contains a 2.5 mile round trip trail…read more The trail itself is clean and very well maintained, with the edges of the trail always mowed. (In fact, I can't remember a time when the edges had not been mowed.) There are plenty of trash cans along the trail if you need them and, once again, I have never seen these cans neglected. There are also benches that offer a nice view if you wish to take a break or just want to find a nice quiet spot to relax in. Overall, this forest preserve is an excellent place for a little outdoor exercise and some fresh air.

We parked at the Oak Opening area and hiked down to Lake Defiance, taking the Lake Defiance Trail. We stopped at the Nature Center to see some displays and chat with the ranger, and then continued our hike. Seeing the moraines, the leftover hills and ridges from the retreating Wisconsin Glacier, 10's of thousands of years ago, was a geologic trip through time. This is a great local state park that does not have an entrance fee! (None of our state parks have entrance fees to the best of my knowledge!) This is a place I can't wait to get back to explore, right in the backyard of the Chicago 'burbs!

This was a lovely place to go for a short winter hike in north suburbs. We followed the…read moreequestrian trail, which takes you past a couple of ponds and up and down a couple of gentle hills. Hikers are welcome, but horses have the right-of-way. Our segment was about two and a half miles, perfect for the spouse, who is not as keen on hiking as I am, particularly in the winter. If you are looking for more or less distance, there are some short cuts and extensions available. Clean outhouses at the trail head, well-stocked with toilet paper. Always a plus. Plenty of deer along the trail. Dogs aren't allowed on the horse trails, but they are allowed elsewhere in the preserve. A couple of bike trails pass through the area as well. We didn't have time to check out the Lake County Discovery Museum, located onsite, but I understand it is worth a visit. It's not what I'd call a spectacular park, but if you are in the area and want to get outside for a bit, this is a pretty solid option.

Barrington does an exceptional job in keeping this place in tip top shape. The signs and paths are well marked. My only gripe is, the paths don't form a loop, so once you reach the end, you have to turn it around and head back the same way you came.
