Easy way to get in a good 10k steps before you even realize it, and the changing landscape is absolutely beautiful. We missed the sunflowers/wildflowers this year, but I will be sure to not miss them again next year!! Plenty of parking for a weekend visit. Wear sunscreen as the path is wide open, and bring hand sanitizer as the restrooms were out of soap both times.

Hikers are welcome, but horses have the right-of-way. Our segment was about two and a half miles, perfect for the spouse, who is not as keen on hiking as I am, particularly in the winter. If you are looking for more or less distance, there are some short cuts and extensions available. Clean outhouses at the trail head, well-stocked with toilet paper. Always a plus. Plenty of deer along the trail. Dogs aren't allowed on the horse trails, but they are allowed elsewhere in the preserve. A couple of bike trails pass through the area as well. We didn't have time to check out the Lake County Discovery Museum, located onsite, but I understand it is worth a visit. It's not what I'd call a spectacular park, but if you are in the area and want to get outside for a bit, this is a pretty solid option.

Joggers, Walkers, Nature Lovers…read more I've been coming to Middlefork for years. Throughout the day, you'll find people jogging, biking and waking on this long trail. I love how peaceful it is. Every season offers different different sights, smells, fauna and flora. It's such a lovely place to go. Then, off the main path, there are paths that go through the savannah. What a lovely walk! Along the paths are signs that tell you the history of the place or plants/birds you may see. Sometimes I'll just stroll with my dog (leashes are required) and read up. To get there, park at the Elawa Farms building. There's a map near the entrance so you can see how far and where the paths go. Happy trails.

Many areas along the trail are shaded by large trees so it's not all sunny and hot. The lake has a good population of turtles and surprisingly also has big mouth bass among other species that you are allowed to fish! They offer a boat ramp to bring your boat or even canoe! They also have plenty of places around the lake to sit and just reflect and relax. The path was very clean and markers easy to spot as there is only 1 path and no diversions. It's a great morning activity with family and friends.

It has a nice soft padding for kids to play on making it safer than your usual wood chips or Tire shreds. There are plenty of swings for both Toddlers and older along with infants and young babies. The only reason I have not given this five stars is because there has been prepares needed to part of the playground that have not yet been repaired. The repairs have been needed for quite some time now and have not yet been addressed. Maybe once the repairs are completed I will change my rating. Another great feature to this area is there are nice bathrooms right by the playground and in the center of the forest preserve. There are also picnic tables and a pavilion for people to have Gatherings of all kinds.

This Preserve is really neat, the parts we did explore were very clean and had several garbage cans alongside the crushed gravel paths. There were several ponds suitable for fishing with easy access to the trails too. We parked in the smaller parking lot toward the south which has about a dozen or so spaces and a small field for picnics I presume... Walking toward the North you'll find a larger field and extensive parking area. Close access to both is a fairly large pavilion with a charcoal grill and several picnic tables. Nearby is a quad of Restrooms featuring handicap accessible stalls as well. There are even recycling bins enclosed in a small shelter. Never seen those before at a park, I kinda love it, go green people! Even though we didn't get to see much of it, the part I did get to check out was top notch! I'd definitely go back to check it out again.

Nestled up in McHenry County on Elizabeth Lake this nature preserve has 2 miles of trails with views of the surrounding 345 acres. I took a photo of the map but their website also has a nice one posted there as well. I wish the trails went all the way around the lake but due to the makeup of the ground/marshy area, preservation efforts, etc. the trails are all on one side of the preserve. It's a lovely setting with a large variety of wildflowers, prairie grasses, plants & trees to take in and the songbirds were in full effect on our visit. There are no restroom facilities here so plan accordingly. The trails are a mowed path with a few footbridges so if it has rained recently the paths could be wet/muddy, especially in the shady areas. We had to turn back twice due to areas that were too wet/muddy to get through in the footwear we had on but would have been doable with hiking footwear. We still enjoyed most of the trail with me in my sandals. There is seating near the parking lot at the overlook/entrance area but no other benches along the trails...but with just 2 miles of trails not really necessary for most.

Beware of ticks in the warmer months. The grasses usually prevent it from getting too muddy.
