Traveling through Germany in early December we added a stop to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles to our itinerary. In the 'off season' many of the local hotels are closed but 'Romantic-Pension Albrecht' is open and we got a great rate for two nights stay. The main entry is on the street side of the house. Ring the door bell on your left to be let in.
Our hostess is a lovely, cheerful woman who speaks a little English. She showed us to our room and let us know about hotel policy. Breakfast is served in a charming 'homey' room at the front of the house from (7:30 -9:00am in summer and) 8:00-9:00am in winter.
This is a 'zimmer frei', set in a Villa built in the year 1901. Each room is unique. Check in is from 4:00pm-8:00pm, check out 10:00am. There is a small parking lot on site, behind the house.
One hand towel and one bath towel per guest were provided in room. (I have yet to see a 'face towel' provided by an European hotel!) We hung them to dry and they were not replaced with new. Not sure if that is because we hung them instead of leaving them on the bathroom floor. The trash was emptied, bathroom wiped down, bathmat replaced and the bed straightened up while we were out. The 'extras' (lotion, shower cap, etc.) that you find in the big hotels are not provided, but if you need something just ask at reception.
The room has a balcony with two chairs and a view of castle Neuschwanstein. There are seat cushions in the closet for the outdoor seating. In room is a big comfortable bed for two (room #2), bedside tables and lamps, a small end table, two chairs and a small flat screen TV mounted to the wall. Wi-Fi is free and quite good during our stay. There are also a couple of open shelves. The room has radiator heating, typical in a German home and controlled by the room occupants. There is no AC from what I can tell but you are in the mountains here and I'm not sure you'd need it.
The breakfast room is in two sections, sunny, overlooking the front garden. Little table tents were set out reserving tables for each room and were set with the appropriate number of plates, coffee cups and silverware, sugar, salt & pepper, a basket of bread and brotchen and butter. The buffet included a large selection of cold cuts, cheeses, yogurt, cereal, milk, juices, coffee, cream, a selection of teas, honey, and jams. Your typical German breakfast spread. While we helped ourselves to the buffet, our hostess brought each of us a hard boiled egg in an egg cup warm from the pot.
The keys we received includes an old style room key and a house key. The main entry locks behind you. Let yourself in whenever you return. Your room key is needed to 'lock yourself in' at night. Those doors do not automatically lock-just like your bedroom door at home.
There are several restaurants, cafe's and imbiss in town and in easy walking distance from the 'pension'. In winter these close a bit early so if you like a late dinner Fussen is just 2 miles down the road. The ticket office is also in walking distance and the horse drawn carriages just a bit further up the road from the ticket office. (Busses to the castles do not run in the winter.)
We were very comfortable here. Almost like being at home or visiting grandma's. The location is great, close enough to walk, but far enough away from the busses of tourists who come in everyday. It's comfortable, quiet and convenient, without all the 'frills'. read more
