This is the first truly negative review I've ever left on Yelp, and I'm doing so with the hopes that it causes Dr. Pugh- who has been around far long enough time know better- to think before he speaks. When I lived in Provo, I not only saw Dr. Pugh because he was BYU's ROTC program optometrist but also because he was one of the only doctors covered by my job's vision benefits. The eye exam went well enough at first until we got to talking about my left eye, which has a visual impairment and looks "away." He 1) called the way my eye rotated "unsightly" (which, as a then 26 year old girl felt like a bucket of cold water), 2) suggested that men might find me more attractive if they couldn't see my eye's turn, and 3) suggested that I get a half-tinted glasses lens for that eye (as if that alone wouldn't draw more attention to it??). I left feeling very self-conscious and worried that something that had only caused me minor awkwardness (it's been that way my whole life, so I was just used to it) was really a much bigger problem than it ever had been. Friends assured me that he was way out of line but I did nothing about it except purchase frames and lenses elsewhere after leaving abruptly. Friends with similar impairments were treated poorly by Dr. Pugh (a friend who was in AFROTC said she had a very similar experience to me, but that he almost prohibited her from being able to serve because he didn't want to perform a test. Another friend, a civilian, said that he mocked her for having a very strong prescription, which baffled her because she was there so it could be corrected). The real reason that I'm finally writing this review is because a friend posted a photo wherein Dr. Pugh wrote "Keep your CP hands out of your eyes" on a woman of colour's new glasses *prescription.* CP, standing for "cotton picking," which she knew because he told her that verbally before writing it down. When I saw it, I was horrified, astounded, but also not surprised that it was Dr. Pugh, having been on the receiving end of his thoughtless/ignorant rudeness. He may be a capable optometrist but he has the bedside manner of a cockroach :( read more

They are pretty bad...I am newer to Utah and was looking for an eye care place to get an exam and contacts. My last optometrist told me to screen for glaucoma and these guys didnt even do it because i was "too young". The most frustrating thing about this place is that I tried to order a box of contacts after the exam and they ordered the wrong ones. It took forever for them to get it right and i left angry. Months later I decided to give them a second shot and REORDER the contacts the i had LAST time and guess what? They ordered the wrong ones again. 3 boxes when i asked for ONE. Dr.Pugh's wife kept saying "its cause they are so similar" but they really arent that hard to tell apart. She wasnt even willing to expedite shipping even though it was her fault-both this time and the first time. I will NEVER come here again and i will make sure all my friends who need eye care never even consider this place. Please dont go here. Save your sanity. read more

Upon seeing the racist written prescription wrote by you, I am highly upset and disturbed. Talking to your patients in such a manner is highly alarming, racist, and offensive. As a doctor your duty and moral obligation is to provide unbiased, respectful, honest, fair, culturally competent, and equitable care. However, with what was seen on that prescription note you did not fulfill your duty as a healthcare provider. read more

Dr. Pugh takes time to educate you. He has equipment that other MDs don't use and you see what he is seeing--he explains everything. Don't be in a rush when you make an appointment to see him. He cares about you and the health of your eyes. Everyone in the office is very helpful and kind. Dr. Pugh and his team are that rare breed of true health-care givers. read more

Of course I waited until the last possible minute to schedule an eye appointment, I was on my last set of contacts and they needed replacing bad. I called up Dr. Pugh's office and got scheduled for later that week! During my visit I learned so much about my eye and the examination, all things I have never learned in all my years of going to an eye doctor. In the end I walked out of the office with a complete eye exam, contact fitting and a scan of my eye for only $90! I was super pleased, especially since my old doctor was going to charge me almost $200 for the same thing. The best thing about Dr. Pugh is he cares about the needs of the patients, he told me how I could save money and extend the life of my contacts. I'm so happy that I went to him for my vision needs :) read more

Dr. Pugh is very personable with his patients and has technology that I haven't used in other offices. I liked that he used the Optomap to take a full picture of my eye. He took ample time to get to know me and explain his work. He was also very patient working with me (I've had fatigued eye's for the past week and as a result was probably not the easiest client to work with). He seems to still love his job and that makes a big difference when visiting an optometrist. read more

Lots of weird things about this guy: Takes forever for them to answer their phone. The lady asked for the last four digits of my _father's_ social security number (assuming I'm a college freshman still on my parents' insurance.) When I came to the office, the receptionist would ask me a question, then start talking to the delivery guy instead waiting for my answer, as if I wasn't even there. It was odd. Dr. Pugh sure takes his time---as if he has nothing else to do all day but ask you about your medical history and reminisce about 1970-something. Maybe some people like that style, but it wasn't for me. He asked if I take any vitamin supplements. When I told him that I don't, he wrote "NEEDS MORE INFO" on his form and said that I would want to start taking them once I know what he knows. Maybe that line works on the freshmen, but I know enough to know that anyone who says you have to buy vitamin supplements in order to have healthy eyes is probably selling you something. The doctor seemed overly convinced that diet and nutrition are the cause of various eye problems, rather than genetics. I'm sure this can be true, but something about his emphasis on nutrition made me feel weird. He wanted me to watch basically an infomercial about the eye scanner he uses. That combined with other things felt sort of patronizing, like I was just some kid who needed educating. Maybe I'm just prideful, but something seemed condescending about his attitude. It was in the middle of the video that I decided I had so little confidence in the doctor's judgement that I did not want to waste my once-a-year vision insurance benefit on his services. So I stood up, said I was leaving because the visit wasn't what I was looking for, had them cancel the insurance authorization, and left. The worst part of the whole thing: as I left, I saw that he had a display with a bunch of vitamin supplements. I can only guess that he would have been happy to sell me some! When I told people about my experience, it seemed everybody but me had heard that Dr. Pugh is like this. They suggested he might be part of a multilevel marketing scheme, hawking those vitamins at people. I don't think Dr. Pugh is a horrible guy, he may have done just a fine job with the actual eye exam if I had stayed (one friend of mine said she was happy with him). But there are definitely better. My appointment the next day at a place recommended to me by my coworkers (Timpanogos Vision Center) was WAY better. We got down to business and figured out what was up with my eyes, instead of trying to sell me a bunch of vitamins. read more

He was really sweet and to the point. He didn't try to upsell. His office staff, however, TRIPLE billed my insurance. I had to pay $180 for ONE box of contacts that I already paid for out of pocket. His staff gave me the run around for about 2 months until I finally gave in and paid them so they would just go away. read more
