This family owned spot has been a local favorite for over 150 years, featuring a wide variety of candles in different scents, colors, wicks, sizes and shapes, home decor and unique gifts! We love supporting small local businesses! So many options to choose from, we ended up spending an hour perusing all the different areas in the store! My favorite scent from the summer collection was the Citron & Bergamot candle! They also have a large sale section I recommend checking out with very affordable prices! Due to COVID-19 they do not allow the public to use their restrooms. We have gone several times during the pandemic and have been able to use the restroom. We were disappointed as we drove a long way and had to use the restroom before we shopped. We had to rush through the store pick a few candles paid and left. We were planning on taking our time in the store and buying more but were unable to do so. We watched other customers ask for a restroom and told to drive down the street. I absolutely love this place but did not like that such a big establishment did not offer the ability to use the restroom. Even paying customers. Hopefully they will find a way to open their restrooms back up. read more

This is the kind of shop I can get lost in and spend an inordinately long amount of time. The Root candles look to be of high quality and come in different formats but don't appeal to my whimsical or creative nature. The packaging is very mass-produced/Williams-Sonoma or Chesapeake Bay-esque. It's such a looooooong store with plenty of home goods and body care products. Prices are high but it is very pleasant to browse and explore. There are candies, chocolates, dried pastas, sauces and food items as well. read more

WOW this place is huge! Lots of candles, home decor, cutesy stuff available for purchase. This place is a warehouse sized, good-smelling factory of every housewife's dream come true. Candles are a bit on the pricey size - I wound up spending $50 (with a 25% Labor Day sale going on, mind you) for 2 candles, 2 coasters, and like 8 stickers. So, take that as you will but this place is pricey in my opinion. Worth stopping by, this place is a good place to do some home shopping. read more

It was a tad overwhelming with the scents from all of the candles. Neat store, very colorful! Staff was very friendly and helpful. They've done a bit of rearranging since we were last here. It's gotten a lot smaller. The outlet "store" is no more. Now there is one room devoted to outlet candles in the main store. The food section has been cut back to half size or more to accommodate the outlet section and that fantastic upstairs section that had great discounts is now closed to employees only. It's a bit of a let down, but we still found a few candles and candle holders that struck our fancy. The store is really lovely inside and this year marks their 150th year! We stopped at Root Candles this afternoon. It is always beautifully decorated with home accessories and holiday accents. They carry Kate Spade, Vera Bradley, and Lilly Pulitzer accessories. Perfect for bridal showers or hostess gifts! The associates were beginning to put out Fall and Halloween decorations when we visited. Witches, pumpkins, and autumn leaves could be seen filling bookshelves. The entire store was 25% off today! With every nook and cranny, there were extensive collections of retired scents and older packaged candles (their black labels). The greatest find was 20 votive candles in the Candy Cane scent for $4.50. It is our favourite scent for Christmas time! We picked up candles in a range of scents from Hosta to Lilac Sage to Drizzling Honey to Pineapple Papaya. Root Candles has something for everyone! read more

We have always made it a point to visit the Root Candle Company Factory And home design Emporium every time we are in the vicinity of Medina Ohio ..... And , being creatures of habit , We have practiced pretty much the same routine on each of our trips to the locale every few months . After our usual lunch break at Miss Molly's Tea Room , the next stop on our agenda has always been the Root factory , and the anticipation of spending two hours or so entranced by the latest Design offerings in the Root emporium showrooms, And the wonderful aromas that are attendant to the various well arranged displays . . In addition to its namesake aromatic candles , which feature hands down , the worlds best fragrances and colors , This business is a quasi-museum of decorative arrangements and artistic nick-nacks which are designed to be used as focal points on bookshelf's , or to enhance side tables , or to add pizazz to window treatments . Among The buildings multi room geography there is also a area that highlights a variety of party food items and menu helper ingredients , in addition to a spot that boasts of a number of long tables which serve the do-it-yourself Classes which are offered on food preparation techniques and hand made decorative accessories! And ..... have I mentioned the area that purveys candle " seconds " at a reduced rate ? I must say tho , that on this particular trip , We were a bit disappointed, to see that a few of the usual items that were once available for purchase in the front display rooms had been reduced in quantity and selection .......I would be remiss not to Mention the disappointment of a few in our group , as to the Missing in action Kate Spade and Lilly Pulitzer collections . But , alas .... I guess that nowadays , change is inevitable ! I came to support and see what this Ohio brand is all about after I saw one of their candles in a Columbus shop. We went on Cyber Monday and the store was even offering a 30% off deal on everything in store. The store itself is actually quite large. It was all decorated for Christmas and there were ornaments, other knick knacks, and decor for sale in addition to their candles. They also have a room filled with food and beverage items and some bath and body products. If you're looking for more deals, go to the outlet in the building next door. Here we found a lot of the same candles, but for cheaper prices. Some of them might have some imperfections, but it's all the same when you burn them. I was kind of disappointed in some of the scents, but I think I'm the odd man out when it comes to picking out candle scents in general. I scored one of their limited edition Vanilla+Ginger candles and a few other scents including sparkling cranberry, winter basalm, and anise cookies. Their taper candles are quite gorgeous as well. They looked to be very high quality, but where a bit more than I wanted to pay per candle stick at the moment. If you're in the area, this spot is a nice attraction and it's not too far from the town square. I highly recommend going to smell the scents prior to buying online if you can. read more

Root Candles is an adorable business in Medina. The store sells candles galore as well as gifts. Root is always updating their displays and has cute and creative decor. There are walls of endless candles in wonderful scents and colors. I appreciate how they have many different sizes of candles from large jars to tiny tealights. Before you purchase any candles, check the outlet which is now located in the upstairs and back of the store. I was able to buy the same candles that was $22 in the front of the store, for $1.59 from the outlet. The only difference was the lid on the candle jar. If you're looking for Vera Bradley, they have a large selection. I was disappointed to see, during my last visit, that they were no longer carrying Kate Spade and Lilly Pulitzer gifts. Regardless though, Root Candles is a wonderful store and well worth the trip to Medina! read more

I love Root candles. I especially love Root candles at the factory outlet store!!!! The place smells incredible. Depending on the wind, the town of Medina smells wonderful! I don't get up north as often as I'd like, but when I do I HAVE to go to the AI Root Company store, the origin of all Root candles. And while I've been in the store, my focus is always on the outlet in the back. You can get fantastic deals on awesome candles that are... the wrong color, discontinued, whatever. A.I. Root Company, you take the sting out of bees! From honey, to candles the Root Co. takes the cake. (Honey bee cake to be specific). The A.I. Root Co. has been a staple in Medina for YEARS! They have expanded their flagship store from the old Root that I grew up with (am I dating myself? I hope not!) to a large showroom and showplace. For the candle snob in you, head into the main store. Even if you plan on just browsing, you'll probably end up walking out w/ a little something...if not a lot of something. Make sure to try the honey made by Root. Even the White House uses over a gallon a month of Root's honey. (yes, it IS that good.) For the cheaper, less-snobby you....be sure to visit the "Outlet" around the back of the building for a less-than-perfect candle but with all the great Root scent! You'll be sure to find a bargain here. This is an ideal place to pick up a gift, wedding present, or a little something for yourself. We decided to come to Root as it is one of my favorite places for candles. Today, they had a 40% all things and at an outlet, it was the perfect experience! I ended purchasing so many candles for the many family and myself- hard to resist. My absolute favorite is the spiced cinnamon and the Scotch pine . Totally worth the visit as I left wit. The store is inviting - product is arranged and displayed neatly and in a well-organized, well-planned manner. The candles are high quality and beautiful in both scent and color. The decor pieces they offer are also the best - high end & high quality. I went today (in April) to see if a Spring Arrangement of Lilacs in a wonderful purple bubble vase I had seen there previously, (but didn't purchase at the time) was still available - they were ! I added more pieces in a similiar/complimentary style. The sales staff were warm, positive and very attentive to customer satisfaction. I had the pleasure of working with Debbie, the manager, Becca, talented designer, Hanna & Cathy, sales associates, and Sandra, in the Cafe. "Sparkling Champagne" is my personal favorite scent for Christmas & New Years - this scent is wonderful & amazing ! Their candles are available in jars, votives and tealights. I also like their tapers and Collenette tapered base candles - the Garnet color is exquisite. They also sell beautiful home decor/candle holders/botanicals/arrangements and some novel antique display pieces. They offer a wide selection of wreaths, accent pieces and also some Vera Bradley. Have to say disappointed in Root Candle today. My wife and her friend went in to purchase many holiday candles and items with their 20% off "Mailing List Discount" coupons. They shopped and selected 2 shopping carts filled with products and went to checkout and realized they left their coupons at home. My wife asked them to look up the names on the Private Mailing List to prove they had them, but the clerk refused. She also didn't offer to hold their orders so they could return with the coupons later in the day or tomorrow. My wife is NOT happy! Besides the beautiful square, AI Root Candle company is the claim to fame in Medina, Ohio. I absolutely love their candles! They come in all different kinds of smells and I could literally spend hours there. They also have great other items, including stationary, dried or preserved food items and so many different decorations (I loved an embroidered America pillow I found there but it was just way too expensive to buy--$200, but I still want it so badly!) I definitely recommend looking first to the outlet (when coming from the square, it's just after the train tracks on the left) to purchase any candles there as they usually have out of season, discontinued and slightly damaged/not-up-to-snuff items. The candles here are much cheaper and still very good quality!! I love buying all my candles here to support a local business! I've even found their candles across the country and internationally. read more

I LOVE ROOT CANDLES! LUV'M, LUV'M, LUUUVVUUMM! But, I cannot afford them. This review has a happy ending though...'Brief' history; I've lived in Ohio 49 of my 50yrs and never heard of them until my childhood best friend whose family moved away to California when we were 11yrs old-(broke my little heart) called to ask a favor... He was coming to town because he was the stage sound man for a major act and asked if I could find them and as he pronounced it, "Medeeena" (he's a So-Cal boy now ;-) was only 35mins from home. California is 3,500 miles and he absolutely had to have them! He found one at a local San Diego bookstore that was going out of business for $5 drastically marked down and did not know full price value. He wanted what he had, a 12" Timberline Pillar or several if the price was right. Here comes the Review/Story part... I called "Root" 'cuz what was 'so-darned-special' 'bout these anyway!-(I 'thought' that part-rude to say otherwise.) The woman on the phone was very polite as I reiterated my story (above) and I just wanted to give her the praise from the other side of the continent. She listened and popped out "Well if he doesn't mind knicks or imperfect?, you can shop the discards in the warehouse? Me: "Can you accommodate a wheelchair?", She: "The warehouse has steps but there is a freight elevator?" I said that was just fine. Although, for the thoughtful accommodation of this sales associate, when I arrived a different associate treated me rudely and would not let me go to the elevator with "I don't know why she told you that!!!" repeatedly until, stomping, she left then came back to say it was *ok!*. Sending for her to come get me and ring me out was another situation and proved very laborious to her(you know, lifting the door and pushing the one elevator button subseded with the act of those burdensome register keys) and when I thanked her all I got was her resuming a conversation with a friend that I so rudely interrupted with my eventual $70+ purchase on five candles (remember nearly a 50% discount)...'Suppose I'm privileged to get them at all*!?* ANYHOO! I lit a candle at home and that damned candle burned approximately 8-10hrs a day for nearly 4 months! I've never seen anything like it! No scent loss, no warping or leaking down the side! OMG! I was AMAZED and told everybody! And you know when a candle gets low and people want to throw them away? I told my assistants that I'm conducting an experiment and don'tcha know?! That candle burned down 'til there was not a drop of wax left in the foil I wrapped the bottom with! Literally! Just foil and the little metal recyclable wick support! I didn't go back into the store because of the degrading in-person treatment, but sent others in. Later I moved and they didn't have much of a website and when they did they weren't selling the scratch-n-dents. Further, when they listed the sales or the s-n-ds the shipping was cost prohibitive and I called to see if they'd send them USPS at $6 as opposed to their $20, they said "No." After almost 18yrs (accidents that land you paralyzed and in a wheelchair can make you very patient!... or insane!...I choose the former) I am THRILLED to have received my first two big boxes by USPS! They look fine just one cracked glass en route I suppose, and one lid to a jarred candle I thought was missing but later found in the box. The broken one got a small piece o' duct tape. It's burning now, duct tape facing the wall. In the end buy them on sale, damaged, full priced, at ANY price they are worth it! If you have brown skin you'll be followed in store and at Medina Square Festival "Root" displays -not me but my trustworthy assistant shopping alone among a throng of suburban 'lighter' "ladies, They need to work on that and my assistant is past the ignorance, but like me, she probably won't shop in person(and she at full price or sale)and they are losing a valuable possible idea driven marketing line, with my shared and enjoyed laughable apology to Sheria (she'll buy them when I order), we can't help ourselves! Skip the retail store and head straight to the Outlet store around the back first. The outlet store features overruns or slightly imperfect candles. Hey, for burning at home or churches, this is a great deal! The medium Queen Bee jars were only $12.50! I stocked up on jars, votives, tapers, and travel candles. They were running a buy 3 get one free sale when I was there. I'm not sure how frequently they run that sale but doing this on top of the already deep discount makes you wonder why anyone would want to shop the retail store. Well, wait, the retail store does feature new scents and gourmet food so there is a good reason to pay full price for that stuff. read more

Root Candles is another example of my "worth driving to or from Cleveland" category. Yes, they sell candles. Actually, the highest quality candles you will find anywhere, but this is just as much a gift and home decor destination as well. I'm not sure who their buyer is, but their taste is excellent! There are two floors and at the end of the lower level is an area where they hold cooking classes and tastings. Local tip: when you are done with the big store, be sure to head around the corner to their outlet store. Good markdowns and some current and discontinued "seconds" (which are actually hard to find the flaws in). They change displays and selection in the main store on a seasonal basis and host an indoor farmers market on weekend days in the winter. read more

It seems like several years ago they had MUCH more merchandise. They have really pared down what they have in stock. That being said it's a local business that has some pretty great candles. If you are buying for yourself I would recommend the discount store that is located around the corner (in the basement) of the retail shop. The prices are far friendlier. read more

OK Root Candle, way to recover! At the end of the day I received a call from Root Candle informing me that after all the confusion I would be receiving my 15 Scotch Pine candles on Christmas Eve....via FedEx instead of UPS. This for sure cost Root Candle a lot more money, but they did the right thing and took care of the customer! I had stopped buying from Root a few years back because they discontinued my favorite "Scotch Pine" candle but last minute I discovered they had reinstated the fragrance for a limited time so I order 15 just to be safe. My offer is still there to expand your business (not for free), but good recovery Root Candle and Merry Christmas you old building and loan! PS. They changed the Scotch Pine formula and it's just not the same so now I have 15 presents to give away. Life is funny! Give me a call Root Candle when you bring back the original "Scotch Pine" fragrance and we'll try it again. read more

Haven't been to the actual store but i have been ordering online from them for the last few years. Their candles are THE BEST!!! they aren't made with chemicals which is a plus for me cause any candles made with chemicals gives me headaches. And their candles smell wonderful!! I can light one in my bedroom upstairs and can smell it all the way downstairs! My favorite is the enchanted twilight, but sadly this is a discontinued scent. :( why ROOT, why?! fortunately they have great sale prices on discontinued scents and with my obsession, I've stocked up like crazy!!! And they do cost more than traditional candles, but they burn CLEAN all the way down to the bottom of the jar. and they have scents like no other. My suggestion, go to their website and see if you can find someone locally who sells ROOT, and you can stop by and smell them for yourself! :) My ultimate goal: to someday visit ROOT in person and possibly never leave..... :) read more
