As I was leaving the waiting room to be weighed, a staff member identified as Mary approached me in an aggressive and patronizing manner regarding my service dog. My service dog is a highly trained 10-year-old German Shepherd who assists with my disability. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), medical staff are permitted to ask only two specific questions regarding a service animal: whether the dog is required because of a disability and what task the dog has been trained to perform. Instead of following these guidelines, I was confronted in a way that dismissed my legal rights as a patient with a disability. There were additional concerns during this visit. The front desk was unable to print intake paperwork from the new Prairie Lakes / Riverview Health system, leaving me unable to review documents I was expected to sign. While the medical assistant and office manager were professional and respectful, the overall handling of the situation was troubling. Dr. Jeni Shull-Clayton appeared unprepared to address the situation and was unable to meaningfully discuss my concerns or the role my service dog plays as part of my care support. My service dog was not acknowledged as part of my care needs. Most concerning, I ultimately received no medical evaluation, treatment, or care during this appointment. Because no services were provided, neither Medicaid nor I should be billed for this visit. Patients should feel safe, respected, and heard in a medical setting. Unfortunately, I left this appointment feeling distressed, unsafe, and disappointed. I hope Prairie Lakes Medical Clinic and Riverview Health ensure that staff are properly trained regarding ADA service animal law and patient rights so that other patients do not experience similar treatment. I am unclear if I nor my adult kids, desire to return here any longer after trying them for years. Now both are gone now & both my DH & I see Dr. Jennifer Clayton. Same experience. Office staff is responsive & caring. Dr Clayton is accessible and involved in our care and oversees/coordinates issues among my DH's specialists. On top of that they USE My Chart the way it should be used. My questions are answered, prescription issues addressed when needed. The My Chart tool used in this way, allows me to stay focused on issues, tests, appointments and medical history in a comprehensive manner (especially helpful as we age!)

He said…read moreI must be feeling lousy because of the weight gain, though my autoimmune numbers were up, and I should just try to lose some weight. It was a frustrating answer, since the inability to lose weight was part of the problem. My husband's coworker recommended Amy Nicley, NP, at Excell for Life, since they work on your health through dietary changes and supplements, so I made an appointment. Blood tests galore revealed major inflammation and an autioimmune issue, as well as a problem with my pancreas that prevents me from processing carbs (hence the rapid weight gain!). I never would have known that! While we're continuing to figure out my body's autoimmune issue, I'm already feeling so much better with the dietary changes and supplements we've implemented. I was having heartburn all day, every day, headaches every day---that's all gone! I have far more energy, too. And Amy won't stop looking for answers until my whole system is happy again---no shrugs and, "Let's wait it out," or, "I don't know what to tell you." She's excited to figure this out, like a detective with a thrilling case. I absolutely love that about her! The supplements are a bit pricey, but some are rather exotic compared to what I've taken before (the grocery store variety, you know), so I don't know if they'd be cheaper elsewhere. And there is a $97 out-of-pocket functional medicine fee for each visit (on top of what they bill insurance, I believe), which is a little different. But it's been worth every penny! A side note: many of the medical professionals here were patients here and experienced such great results they just HAD to make their way on staff. Truly, it's that great.

My husband located this urgent care center that was actually open until 9pm and was near 86th and Michigan Rd. We ran over. It is a small place on the north side of 86th St. Very clean and accommodating. Dr. Khan was patient and very thorough. He told us exactly what we had (strep) and why we had it. He explained what medication he was prescribing and why. He told us where to go to fill the prescription and said that if we were going to go directly to the pharmacy he would wait (past his 9pm closing time) to make sure that the pharmacy didn't need to call him because of the narcotics prescription (Tylenol with codeine). He said they would bill our insurance and on our way we went. He was maybe the best urgent care doc either of us has ever seen. Dr. Khan told us that he used to work at the urgent care in Nora but he left and opened up this place on his own. Looks like he has a second location on W. 10th St. as well. We would highly recommend this clinic.

Physician was excellent. Very thorough and detailed at explaining everything that was going on. You could tell he is not a "cookie cutter" or "cookbook doctor" where I feel they don't think analytically but look up a typical cookbook recipe to fix the problems. You can tell the Doctor has extensive experience and his approach is individualized. My daughter who really liked the doctor and was very happy being there. Rare for a child to like doctors office. I am so grateful that they would help us even though they were closed, lights off. Grateful for Physician for his prescribed plan of treatment. Thinking about switching my personal physician to him.

Also being part of a Christian company their beliefs sometimes infringe on personal choices which makes some office visits awkward. Dr. Melloh's staff is great and returns questions within a fair amount of time, and prescription refill requests within 24 hours if it's not scheduled; and the Doctor on call has always dealt with my issues promptly and professionally. Now, that is all the great stuff the Doc has going for her office-wise, as for the good MD herself, she listens intently; she is profoundly willing to work with you (not work ON you, like you're a car needing a tune-up); and, and she cares. You can tell by the way she tries to fix patients like me with ailments that are chronic. She hasn't given up on me and I'm kind of a pain in the yoo-hoo. Booked first appt after birth with ease. Every step of the way after that has been difficult & unprofessional. They never answer the phones. I'm not being dramatic, not once in eight months have I been able to get anyone on the phone. They advise to book within the portal. ANYTIME I submit a request, it's a delayed response. 8 days ago, I called, no answer. Sent a portal message explaining it was an urgent medical matter that I felt she needed seen for that day. The contacted me back today, 8 days later. I 10/10 do not recommend. If you prefer a more holistic approach with peds that don't push vaccinations, there are other much better offices than this.

It has been kind of scary lately since the discovery of the COVID-19 spread across the nation. I work in a restaurant and it may be forced to close. Waiting to hear the governor's announcement today. I'm sitting in the waiting area for my annual checkup and I already see 3 people wearing face masks. Hopefully a vaccine is presented soon! Good to know that you can still go to the doctor and it isn't shut down. I have hope we will get through all of this.
