I had gone here a few times, but recently received the worst haircut of my life at this salon. They barely paid attention to what I was asking for when I provided reference photos and detailed shots of what I was looking for. I thought to myself, "I'm sure she knows what she's doing and is actually listening, I must be imagining this." I wanted a tapered and highly feathered cut without losing much length of my past-shoulder length hair. I've had this haircut many times and it's quite simple with my long layers and length. The stylist cut off over 7+ inches. I was polite, tipped of course but left clearly unhappy with the result though realizing that haircuts are subjective. What upset me was that despite my clear dissatisfaction the stylist seemed in a hurry and did not offer to adjust the blunt styling to something more feathered, layered, etc. She had more of a, "Oh well, see ya never," aloof attitude. I actually reached out after the fact to see if she could fix it, she got back days later and seemed ultimately put out by the request. I was disappointed and stuck in a "bad haircut" state of panic. I returned to my regular, albeit pricier salon (Helm, also in River Market) and was thrilled at what the stylist there was able to do to salvage my hair. She got me in last minute late at night to help. She also charged me half of what a normal haircut would cost. A stark contrast from the service I received at R&B. Needless to say I went back to Helm for coloring and will continue to moving forward! read more

I just moved to KC from CA. I researched the salon and chose Erin based on her bio. Finding a new stylist is tough. I always want a great hair do with pleasant conversation and a warm heart. While waiting for my appointment, Erin was kind to her client, so I felt confident in my choice. When I took the chair, the first thing Erin said, was "You should tell your stylist you have long hair in the future". Her tone spoke as if it was a burden. The appointment was booked online, perhaps a prompt for additional hair would help... I've had my hair done all over the country, I've never had to mention it before. I apologized throughout my appointment for making more trouble with the style. Needless to say, conversation was awkward. I asked various questions about options and her opinion. Erin's response was, "It's up to you, when I cut I cut. No going back", coldly. Technically, Erin did a good job on my hair. Price point was where I expected this salon to be. This has only become increasingly more difficult for me since moving from the dryness of Colorado to this godforsaken humidity- someone really should have warned me! So, I decided to try this salon when I first moved to the River Market about two years ago. I've actually seen a number of the stylists: Molly, Sarah, Emma, Abigail, and Erin. My schedule varies a lot so it makes it hard to consistently see the same person. But they have all done such a beautiful job and I always leave happy! My last appointment was with Erin and she thinned out my hair a bit, which I really liked because otherwise my hair just grows out into this unattractive triangle shape. They use Kevin Murphy and R&Co products, which both happen to be cruelty-free. They are also both vegan friendly, meaning that they have both vegan and vegetarian offerings. The stylists suggested that I start using the Atlantis R&Co shampoo and conditioner, which are both vegan and ideal for thick, curly hair. Janice Pumpkin was great! I came in for a color and haircut. I was immediately greeted and seated. Janice did a quick consultation and asked what I wanted done. I got an extra conditioner (apparently no facials done so basically the Yelp checkin) is what I got. I appreciated the same person coloring, washing, and cutting my hair. I loved the color and style. The salon was cozy with an elegant feel. I didn't have time to really walk around the River Market neighborhood, but seems like an interesting place to explore. Anyone who has moved to a new city or has been in search for a new hair stylist can agree that finding one is usually a process. However, my search started and ended at this salon. The staff at the salon is so friendly. They made it a point to really take care of me while I waited, even though I only had to wait only about 2 minutes. My stylist, Kayla was extremely kind and very attentive to what I wanted. I know I am picky, but she was noting but pleasant. She is a true perfectionist. I was perfectly satisfied with the style, even then, she reviewed the cut and color again, critiqued and corrected anything she saw and made it flawless. She has a fantastic personality, which was both professional and personal. It was like visiting with a good friend. She really loves her work and it shows. I don't take the time to write reviews unless I have a deep impression with my experience at a store or with a service. I would and will recommend Kayla, and most likely her colleagues to anyone in search for a great cut, color and style all for a great price. Most recently, she did a balayage and a haircut, and I love how it turned out. I told her to do whatever she thought would be best with the color, and I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Although I feel I can be challenged when trying to style my hair, she always is giving me tips on how I can achieve the look I want. Molly has been my stylist for quite some time. She is personally nothing short of amazing. When she told me her plans to open her own salon, I knew that it would be a success. Since Roots and Branches has opened, I have loved the experience. Not only can you get an amazing cut, color and style but there are tons of great products as well. Roots and Branches is one of the only salons in the KC area carrying the EVO line of products. I have personally used several of the products and have been extremely happy with them. I booked my appointment with Janice online through Yelp and could not have asked for a better outcome! Janice took the time to genuinely ask what I was looking for in my hair color as well as what my concerns were from a previous bad hair color. Erin was my stylist at Roots & Branches. I don't recommend her at all. I am a 47yr old brunette and requested to remain a chocolate brunette. I made it very clear that I do not like red and don't want red dye to be added to the color. I have never had a problem requesting that I don't want this anywhere else. 3/5 times Erin added red to my hair arguing with me that I asked her to do it and then chastised me in the salon that 'she was the professional and she shouldn't have to tell me what she decides to do"!! Erin, doesn't listen to her clients concerns and definitely doesn't make you feel comfortable. She also forgot to give me a robe to put on and spilt hair dye on my sweater. I had to ask for a robe. She doesn't seem to care. And forgets that without customers she wouldn't have any business. read more

Let me walk you through my entire experience. I made an appointment for 5:30pm. When 5:30 came around as I was parking, the hairstylist called said that she was still doing the previous appointment and asked if I could wait until 6:30. I was not happy because appointments are two weeks out and I drove a long way to get there. I was still very nice to the stylish. I realized one thing during my waiting time that I was not their demographic which was mostly white. Every other hair stylish was very chatty and super friendly to their clients. I showed her the pictures of what I wanted and told her I understood that I was going from dark to quite lighter so it might not turn out exactly like the pictures. We went through the process with a bit of rush because we didn't start dying the hair until 7pm. The entire time she barely spoke to me. I made a couple convo initiators but nothing passed 3 4 sentences. So imagine that from 5:30pm till 9:30. The color was NOT even closed to what I wanted (honest it looked choppy and chunky) but liked the haircut then probably because it was blowdryed and style. Thats why I booked a follow up appointment. I also tip 15%. But after 1 week, I tried to make it work but the cut looked so bad because I dont blowdry or straighten my hair every day. The day before the follow up appointment, she contacted me sayint that she had been sick (probably cancel the appointment again). I said i wouldn't make it and I hope she felt better. No reply. Not even a "okay, thanks". It took her 2 seconds to cancel?my appointment (I received a text almost immediately). The bottom line is that my experience at this salon was NOT good. Below average turnout and unacceptable customer service. read more

I met Molly years ago through a friend. She has given me several haircuts through out the years (I moved away from KC, moved back, then moved away again). She did a fantastic job every time. I took a trip back to KC last week and decided to call her up. Unfortunately, she couldn't fit me in so she recommended Sarah. I have to say that the vibe in this place is great! It is very modern but also very cozy. They have a nice selection of beverages to make your experience as relaxing as you want too! (Blue Moon beer, wine, tea..you name it)I love that they sell little quirky things for the home as well as hair and beauty products too! Debbie is my stylist and has been for years. She rocks. I first met her after a haircut disaster, which she saved me from. Haven't been to anyone since. She always has an idea for color and cut. I don't really have to say much or tell her what I want.I think that is a great quality in an artistic stylist!
