Our US documents didn't translate to BC laws, necessitating the drafting up of new paperwork). Anyhow, Kristen was super patient with me, explaining everything to me, often repeating details (a few times!), and helping refer us to other resources we inquired about. I can't stress how much peace of mind it provides, especially as a parent, to have these documents done - and done correctly. Kristen responded to my emails and calls promptly, and I liked how they offer free notarization to their clients (note: other firms we used all charge for notarizing documents). I assured her that it directly from my reserve and all she had to do was verify who I was. I had three pieces of valid id including passport, nexus and drivers license. I am a sales executive that oversees Canada so as a business professional I didn't appreciate her declining service. She said she wouldn't sign the document even though I had arrived on time, prepared and with all valid documentation. I accused her of acting in a discriminatory manner against me because she couldn't come up with one valid reason not to notarize the document. After accusing her of being discriminatory, she at no point denied it or came up with a valid reason for not signing my document. I sat in her office waiting for a valid reason why she couldn't notarize my document. Eventually she glared at me and signed it.

She also lists her secondary office in Port Moody, an actual office. So when my wife and I made a purchase in the area, I thought great, we can meet there. When it was time to sign the documents, she told us to meet at a real estate office no where close to where she claims her Port Moody office to be. As this was our first home purchase, it was important to us so we made sure that we arrived a few minutes early. This meant we had to eat dinner early and fight through rush hour traffic to get there on time. When we got there for our 6pm meeting on a rainy fall evening, the office was completely empty. We were locked out, it was dark, it was rainy and it was cold. She finally arrived at 6:15pm and by that time we had been waiting outside for 20 minutes. When she did arrive, she just rolled up like it was nothing. No apologies and not one reason for being late. Like I said, she got the job done but perhaps she should take a course in customer service. I won't be recommending her to my family or friends.

Having now had to deal with two estate attorneys, I can easily say - beware of this one. Regular communications, monthly accounting's and frequent telephone calls to advise and listen. It was a rather complicated estate and took over four years to settle. But it was handled with transparency and as efficiently as Probate Court allowed. This attorney however was the exact opposite. Although it was s very straightforward will with little complexity, there was no communication except when forced, no transparency whatsoever and no accounting until the very last day. During the three years it lasted it was an uphill battle to get the simplest of tasks completed. The straw that broke the proverbial camel's back however was that he completely misrepresented explicit directions of the testator, even though he had drafted the will himself. It was common knowledge amongst the family and the alternative executor what was intended, but the lack of explicit verbiage cost the family over $45,000 and much consternation. Plus he should have excused himself from the proceedings due to the conflict of interest, but had to be threatened with being brought before the Legal Board Tribunal before finally recusing himself. Be forewarned, there are much better estate attorneys than this one.
