We sat outside in the beautiful Hofgarten courtyard, surrounded by historic architecture, candlelight, and a lively but relaxed atmosphere. As evening set in and the lights came on, the setting was absolutely charming and felt authentically Swiss. For dinner, we ordered two different dishes. The Zanderfilet (pike-perch) was served over ratatouille with olive oil and oregano, along with potatoes. The fish was beautifully prepared--tender, flavorful and light--and the vegetables complemented it perfectly. We also ordered the Wiener Schnitzel made with regional veal, accompanied by fresh vegetables and rösti. The schnitzel was huge, wonderfully crisp on the outside and tender inside. It was exactly the kind of traditional dish we wanted to experience while visiting Switzerland, and the rösti was a great addition. The portions were generous, the food was excellent, and the historic courtyard atmosphere made the evening especially memorable. Restaurant Löwenzorn was a perfect choice for our final night in Switzerland and one of the meals we'll remember from our trip. Highly recommended if you're visiting Basel and want good food in a beautiful, traditional setting. We would definitely return.

The restaurant interior was charming. The food was delicious and the presentation was most impressive. The price was modest for the value received. I might add that we had been walking and riding trams all day and I found the iced tea so refreshing that I drank two carafes. It was easily our most memorable meal in Switzerland, yet far from the most expensive! It was well worth the (scenic) trip from the Messeplatz to the Bruderholz watertower.

The neighborhood was preparing for the Glaibasler Charivari and had a concert across the street, filled with Gugge music! Since there was a beer garden out front, many of the musicians stopped in, and we were wildly entertained with Santa, jesters, "mice" and the like... all with their drums and piccolos... We only wish that we could be here in a few weeks when the charivari begins at 4 AM with concerts in the street....

However, they are doing a good job out there. Super friendly staff and always something new on the lunch menu. I was a bit unlucky with my lunch choice though, for one, the pork steak wasn't cooked enough, and the meat was somewhat chewy, but our server took care of it. On the cooking part, that was, the meat was still on the cheap side. But hey, the place is nice and cozy and staff friendly; I'd give them another chance for sure when I'm back in the area.
