We were so happy to find this wonderful pub on our first day in Oxford. It was conveniently located right across the road from the lodge we were staying at. We ended up having a meal here for three out of the four days of our stay. Food was wonderful and the staff were friendly. The meat pies on the menu were delicious. Good beer and ciders too. A small, cosy pub of two rooms with a nice beer garden, in this small villagey street, 10 minutes' walk north from St John's College. Dating from 1863, the pub was run by the same family from 1865 to 1925, and by another family between 1835 until 1976. The present owners have been there since 1983, so it's clearly got something going for it! It generally has three real ales, Hook Norton's 'Old Hooky' and Adnams' 'Southwold' and 'Broadside' bitter. They also do decent pub-grub, which I can vouch for: my other half had chicken, chips and salad, and I had falafel with houmous, pitta and salad. Both came quickly, were freshly prepared, filling and tasty (and both around £8). Worth popping into - just turn off the mobile phone (the landlord has a thing about them, apparently). Oh - and they don't accept credit cards, though there is a cash machine (ATM) in the pub, which charges £1.99 per transaction. read more

It's my favorite pub. So mellow with the touch of Oxford's northern posh side. Cozy inside and out. Feels feminine and scholarly with roses and books that actually get read; maybe because St. Hugh's a block away was a women's college. Their patio is a hit with its spray of roses and grapevines under heat-lamps - a great place for a gin and juice with pistachios! TIP: Don't sit in the seat RIGHT next to the bar in the back. This pub has served me many a fine meal since I arrived in Oxford. I consider it rather expensive, but that hasn't kept me away because I seem to identify with the place in some uncanny way. The heated garden is a big plus and I think the major draw. Beer is good, food is good, but sitting outside in Oxford AND being warm is always a treat. Also enjoyable are the long tables in the main bar room. Words like "charming" and "cozy" come to mind, but I suppose they are attributed to most small pubs in England. Perhaps I can just say that this is what I think of when I think of an English Pub, and the fact that it is only 2 blocks away from me makes it better than all the others. The Rose and Crown's charms include dried hops on the inside walls, a mysteriously always-locked dining room detached from the main building, and a sign that establishes the latest likely date of establishment, but not the actual date. Funny note, they won't allow you to drink tap water out of sight of the bar. Not as bad as the other pub on North Parade Street that doesn't provide tap water at all, but just be warned that you should be hydrated before going or plan to drink bottled water, no matter how wasteful you think excess packaging is. read more

My main criticism has to do with the proprietor's unfriendly attitude--he has a number of strictures out of the dark ages (no "four letter word" language in even the most benign context or permutation, no use of cell phones, etc.) that are not advertised anywhere until he manifests out of nowhere to tell off everyone at your table. There is nothing wrong with an establishment having rules of conduct, but it should make those clear on entry rather than attacking patrons out of the blue. It also seems strange (and infantilizing) to me for a (quite casual in appearance) community pub to censor ordinary colloquial modern conversation, conducted at a respectful volume between friends. Do all pub proprietors make a habit of eavesdropping on their patrons' private conversations? The drinks and food are also pretty outrageously overpriced, compared to what one can find within a few blocks. Two ciders and some pistachios should not cost £15. I will not be coming here again and do not recommend it--try one of the many friendlier pubs down the road. read more

There's a massive part of me that doesn't want to write a review for this wonderful pub, as when I'm in it, I want it all to myself! Yet of course that would be doing Debbie and Andrew, the proprietors, a huge injustice. In a few words: quintessential classic pub. But so much more. Always great guest ales and good wines. The food is incredible and the service from the whole team is as warm and friendly as it could be. And then there's the pub itself with its low ceilings, nooks and crannies and a superb outdoor courtyard that's open all year. Get down there, have a big lunch, lots to drink and stay for dinner. Support this place, we need pubs like the "Rosey". But don't tell anyone! read more

This is a great local pub, although it's not hostile to visitors. It's homely and laid-back, but if you're used to giant sports screens and having to shout over music, you'll need to readjust, as this is quite old-fashioned. Food is served every day 12 noon - 2.15pm (last orders 2pm) and 6pm - 9pm (last orders 8.45pm), but bizarrely they don't do Sunday lunch from July to September. Never mind - it's a time for barbecues anyway! The food is simple pub grub and snacks or sandwiches with local fillings. Most things are well under £10. They offer an all-year barbecue service which I've been told gets very popular in summer. They'll cook for you or you can order food from a local butchers through the pub and they'll let you use the barbecue. I love sitting outside in the courtyard in summer. They have patio heaters and some rather yellow furniture, but I just like the simple pleasure of having a drink in the summer sun. Snack specialities include pickled eggs and pistachiosgot to be tried to be believed, but I don't have the courage! As for drinks, they have a small selection of traditional ales and lagers, cider, stout, and some fruit juices. Nothing special but enough. There's an ATM but they charge over £1 for every transaction. There are no special facilities for children and I wouldn't recommend it as a place to bring them, as it's meant as a refuge from the noise and stress of modern life. A word of warning as well: mobile phones are frowned upon so remember to put yours on silent! read more

We had an amazing time for dinner our first night in Oxford here. We were a little daunted because of how busy it was and having never been to a pub before as American tourists. A proper pub with a great atmosphere, good ales and beers (spirits are available too), very friendly landlord. The food that I have had is good too. Some of the best chips I have had, and the pint of sausages is a tasty novelty. Heated outside smoking facilities are available too if you need. Nice to just sit out there even if not a smoker. Overall a perfect place for a relaxing drink if you are in North Oxford. read more

I can't be the first person to review this pub! An Oxford classic tucked away in pretty North Parade Avenue. Always well-reviewed in the Oxford Times and deservedly so. Better than average pub fare from a small, focussed menu. Not a gastropub but top-end pub food and the landlord prides himself on the quality of the beer which is always superb. And he always offers a straight glass or a handle! Reminds me of the sixties. The pub is tiny and often crowded. The garden to the rear gives more space especially for the smoking fraternity. North Parade's classic pub. Great beer and a slightly barmy landlord who doesn't like mobile phones. I've not had the proper food but they do a bar snack which consists of smashing a bag of crisps on a pickled egg... and might well be the best thing ever invented by humankind. read more

We were 8 American visitors looking for a classic British pub over Thanksgiving and we found it!! It's very small on the inside (and packed with patrons) but there is also a very nice outdoor area with heaters. The food was wonderful and the portions were plentiful! The beers and ales on tap were fabulous! Andrew, the proprietor, was extremely friendly and talkative!! Lauren and Kate, the bartenders, were helpful and knowledgable about all the local beers and ales! This was a great find and an extremely enjoyable evening at a local pub! read more
