Small to medium sized pub that serves food. About 8 or so beer on tap, and a fairly large selection of food (for a pub). The food tasted quite nice actually. Table service (ordering and serving). Most tables have a bench seat on one side oft he table, and a low stool on the other side. Not much space between bar and table so person on stoll needs to occasionally lean forward to let people pass behind. All not very comfortable. No WiFi. Toilets, on the dirty side. Handsoap dispenser was empty. There was no music playing, which I thought was a shame.

The atmosphere alone deserves 5 stars. It is so tight and cozy. The waitstaff is amazing and attentive and it is a great central location. My boyfriend and I had to try this when on our tour we were told that the bookstore neighboring both sides had tried for centuries to buy them out and they refuse. The fish and chips were alright- the batter reminded me of funnel cake batter- too sweet. The hot meat sandwich wth mushrooms and onions was nothing to rave about, either. If anything just stop in for a pint and friendly faces.

This pub is incredibly charming. Small, dark and, cozy; this place is a step back in time! Great beer selection as fell as mulled wine! Seem to always have nice specials! I had the Homemade Lamb Casserole special which was completely gourmet! Very hearty! Mum had the Steak and Ale Pie which was rich and bold! Also, had the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert which was just fantastic! Really enjoy sitting here and indulging in food, drinks and passing the time!

Quite good fish and chips, good ales on tap, and the cozy (small!) interior really encourages spontaneous random conversation with your fellow patrons. Given the opportunity, I'll definitely be back.

Loved this place. It was tiny and cozy sitting in the outer rim of oxford university campus and the main downtown area. Drinks were really good and calamari tasted not bad. Cheesy garlic bread was pretty good too and comes in three pieces. The service was not terrible. The place becomes noisy since it's small.

A very nice - and, as other reviewers have made clear - a very cosy little pub sandwiched in between two frontages of Blackwell's bookshops. Dating back to 1590, it is one of Oxford's oldest pubs, although the current building was built in the 1700s. Initially called the White Mermaid, it was then called the Jolly Volunteer, then (after 1660) The Elephant, and it only acquired the current name a hundred years or so later. The pub is basically a wide passage, with low ceilings. There's an excellent window-table at the front - great for a group of friends (we fitted 10 around it), and another small seating area at the back. It does real ales, on my visit including Vale Best Bitter, Wychwood Hobgoblin, St Austell Tribute, White Horse Wayland Smithy, Timothy Taylor Landlord, and Hook Norton's Old Hookey. Worth a visit.

Warm feel and polite staff. I wasn't able to spend much time here. We had one day in Oxford and made a mini Morse pub crawl part of it. This was our first stop and I really wanted to go back, but time didn't allow. It was quiet (about noon) and just a few other groups of people inside. No music. Just quiet conversations. The bartender (needlessly) apologized for our very short wait. His apology was genuine. He cared about our experience there. It felt so good just sitting there with the sun shining through the window. Again, it was warm. Comfortable. If I make it back to Oxford, I will absolutely return. Oh, and they poured the most perfect Guinness I've ever seen. See the photo. (I know, Ireland is on my list...Calm down.)

Another cozy, warm, historic bar at Oxford! İf you visit Oxford you should definitely make a stop here, one if the oldest in Oxford.

Tiny little pub with excellent cider and wonderfully tender fish in their fish and chips. Literally next door to Blackwell's bookshop.

Yet within minutes, my friend and I were escorted and seated at a table directly underneath several artifacts, photos and letters adorning the walls behind us, that once belonged to the literary giants (such as J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and others) that once frequented this charming tavern. Once again (as was a frequent occurrence during my tour of the UK), I partook of the Shepherd's Pie and a glass of tomato juice (confession: I'm not much of a beer or ale imbiber; apologies for my ignorance to those who are true connoisseurs of the hopped and malted brews, and for the offense of ordering such an abomination in a pub...haha!). In truth, coming here was more of a pilgrimage for a life-long Tolkien aficionado, than anything having to do with drinking or eating. And yet, in raising a glass in toast to my literary heroes, in the hallowed halls where they once gathered, I felt warm sense of kinship, and thankfulness, for such an amazing opportunity.

The pubs is well lined with photos of the authors and it's a nice place to pause and wonder what these illustrious minds would have been drinking in their time. Oxford, UK is a college (and tourist) town. Quality/Quantity - Beer was good, and more importantly one of the few breweries within walking distance to the many college campuses here. See pictures of the menu for both the brewery and guest beers. Kitchen was closed when I got here, but that was ok as I just wanted/needed a beer. Atmosphere - Events - See pictures. Small pub, brewery. Two floors. I think the upstairs is bigger? I never went up, sorry. Indoor/outdoor seating. I started indoors so I could be near the bar, LOL. Then I decided to have my next beer outside and people watched. Another beautiful day (see picture)! I preferred the outside seating over inside. Service - Good. Not sure if it is just me, but I noticed a lot of men sitting at the bar waiting for their wives to come back from shopping. And I was one of them, LOL. Price - I can't remember? But I think less than 5 pounds a beer/pint? It just does not matter sometimes. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success. Cool spot, I am surprised that there are not more breweries in a college town. I am sure there are many pubs, but you guys need more breweries!

It has that classic Oxford pub atmosphere that makes it worth visiting, especially if you're showing someone around the city or looking for a casual drink in a historic setting. There are outdoor tables, seating inside, and a smaller section in the back. During peak hours, it can get quite packed, so it is not always the easiest place to grab a table, but that also adds to the energy of the place. Overall, I would not necessarily come here expecting the best pub food in Oxford, but for the atmosphere, location, and quintessential Oxford experience, it is absolutely worth a stop.

We found ourselves coming here again and again, as it was always nearby after a tour, or perfect for killing time before the next event. (in town for a family member's graduation) There's a few outdoor tables, and many little rooms inside with all types of seating options. We were a larger group with children in tow, and kept lucking out with the long table in the first room on the left. It does get rather busy at peak hours, but if you're patient or come at off peak hours, you'll snag a seat just fine. The fish & chips were a standout from all other fish & chips I had that trip. This is an American tourist review, so take that with a grain of salt, but we liked the food and the service was always friendly and quick.
