We absolutely love Rose Blossom- my daughter went here for 2 years, and now my son attends. The teachers are thoughtful, intentional, creative and also consider each child's needs. As a local educator I have researched a lot of local preschools when we were first looking and Rose Blossom felt right- there is a wonderful balance of structure to the day as well as play based and child led activities. Rose Blossom is the best preschool around, hands down. The owner Sharon pours her heart and soul into her program and the kids attending. She really cares about their learning and development, and it shows. Rose Blossom school setting is so beautiful and serene. I feel happy and confident dropping my kids off there. Another plus is that while everyone else seems to be increasing their prices with no regard for families Sharon keeps them reasonable and I really respect and appreciate that about her. They have wonderful special events throughout the year and a gorgeous yard for the kids to play in. We are now on our third child at Rose Blossom, and I just can't say enough great things. It's truly a wonderful preschool, and it all starts with Sharon, the owner and head teacher. Sharon has a masters degree in child development, and her approach is highly refined, well tailored to each child. She even helps us be better parents by sharing strategies for reinforcing what they are learning at home, and showing us important points of emphasis. She is incredibly caring, and highly invested in every single child. We were concerned that our second child might have a tough transition to preschool on her first day. Sharon took such great care of her that she had a seamless transition. When she was telling us how well she did on her first day, she actually teared up because she was just so proud of her. It's such a reassuring feeling knowing that you are leaving your child with someone who truly cares about them. Rose Blossom also gave our older two kids an excellent head start on kindergarten. Emphasis on reading was especially helpful, and our kids started kindergarten substantially above the standards. The other teachers are excellent as well, and the staff retention is high. The same two main teachers have been there the entire 4 years that we've been at Rose Blossom. The community is quite welcoming, with friendly parents. Our kids are still friends with some of their Rose Blossom classmates years later. Rose Blossom is actually the only thing around Santa Cruz I recommend to people. This is a small town, and most things are just ok at best, or good for here. Rose Blossom is phenomenal. I have had a couple of people send their kids here on my recommendation, and they loved it too. It's also priced very well. For super high energy, hard to control boys, one of the outdoor focused preschools may be a better fit. But for everyone else, Rose Blossom is the best choice, hands down. read more

My daughter has attended Rose Blossom for over a 1 year and she has blossomed! This school has been an extension of our family. The art is amazing! The musical performances every month create a safe environment for the children to learn about public speaking and singing. Also, there are afternoon classes (like tumbling tutor and kick-it karate) for the children to participate in. My 3 1/2 year old is reading and doing math! . They also have a special reading nook outside where the class reads and rests. The school celebrates holidays and birthdays. I can't say enough about the staff. The classes are small so they get one on one attention from the 4 teachers. This is the place for well-rounded children! read more

My son has attended this school for over a year. I love the teachers. Sharon, the owner, is very skilled dealing with children and loves them dearly. She always has a personal story to tell me about my son's day. The program is well organized. Art projects are amazing and there are performances throughout the year that melt my heart. Both of my children have attended Rose Blossom School and have had a wonderful experience there. The focus is academic, however the overall attitude is positive, warm and supportive. My children really enjoyed going to school. They have made amazing friendships with both the children in attendance, as well as the fantastic teachers. I highly recommend this preschool for anyone is who interesting in really preparing their child for kindergarten as well as having them enjoy some of the wonderful programs and experiences that they will have at Rose Blossom. Sharon Rose and her co-teachers are effective, affectionate with the children and compassionate, and the kids get a great balance of play time with art and academic pursuits. Our daughter has attended this school for preschool and Kindergarten. The approach is very child-centered, with a focus on socialization and play that builds confidence. Children in different age groups all come together - which has many advantages, since the older children learn to help and teach others. There are endless creative activities, a wonderful outdoor area, and access to the big room of the Unitarian church for running around on rainy days. They also offer Tumbling Tutor twice a week - which my daughter loves. You can pick full days or half days. The teachers (Sharon, Colleen and Maria) are all exceptional. Sharon is the Director, and has an extensive background in education and child behavior; and she uses her musical talents to help the children express themselves. The parents are also wonderful - we see lots of parent participation at this school. If you're looking for a small school for younger children that does not resemble day care in any way shape or form, this is a great place to explore. read more

As a parent of three children who all went through preschool, I realize that there are many different things a family looks for in a school, depending on their circumstances at the time....whether it's a fit for their specific child's personality and needs; staff; philosophy; level of structure or not; "academic" or play-based emphasis; hours of operation; certainly cost; etc. Many of these things were important to us, but it really boiled down to one thing... the director of this school, Sharon Rose, is passionate about educating and enriching children. This seems like a no-brainer, but I've honestly been at schools where I've wondered if the staff actually likes pre-school age children. It takes a lot of energy, a lot of love and respect for who these "little people" are. Sharon's got it, she hires staff who have it, and she is constantly striving to learn new things about enhancing her preschool curriculum. There is not too much academic vs. play-based or too much play-based at the expense of "academics" because there is both -- the level of academics will match your child's ability at the time. (By the way, we've been through a play-based only pre-school with our first born and she was not prepared for her standards-based public kindergarten. Like those standards or not, they seem to be here to stay and kindergarten truly is like first grade now). For us it comes down to: does our child feel safe; does she feel loved; is she respected; is her day predictable/structured and comforting; is there plenty of play and room for her imagination to grow; is she getting prepared for the more vigorous kindergarten public school standards; is the communication (back and forth) with the parents good; is there music, art, social studies, science (appropriate for their ages) in addition to "letters and numbers"; is discipline handled fairly and consistently; etc. We've been at RB from 2007-2013 (don't worry -- not with the same kid), and we've found that all of our requirements have been met -- we've even learned a few things on the way ;). It's a great school. We'll be sorry to leave it as our youngest gets set for kinder next year! read more
