I will give a 0 star If I could. I never thought I'd have to write something like this, but parents deserve to know what really happened. Imagine being a grown adult running a business and choosing to retaliate against a second grader. That's exactly what happened to my son at Rosemount Martial Arts Academy. Before December, both of my boys were thriving. They play basketball, football, and they swim. They're high achievers, hardworking, and always give 100% in everything they do. They were earning their stripes, passing their tests, and moving up just like they were supposed to. Everything was smooth no issues, no concerns, no problems with effort or skill. We even got emails from him complaining my boys and suddenly everything changed. The retaliation only started after my older son earned all his stripes, took his test, and the owner decided to fail him anyway. We confronted him about it, and from that moment on, everything changed. For six months, they kept auto‑drafting $200 every month while refusing to give my second grader any stripes, any testing, or any progress at all. They held him back on purpose not because of his ability, not because of behavior, but because the owner had a personal issue with us. My little boy a second grader showed up excited every week, ready to learn and grow, and they froze him completely. Do you know how painful it is to watch your child wonder why every other kid is moving forward except him? And the saddest part? We talked to some of the neighborhood kids who used to go there and they told us this is exactly why they left too. I also read reviews from other parents saying they noticed the same thing, especially the ones paying out of pocket. Kids repeating the same forms for years, no progress, no explanation the same pattern we lived through for two years. And honestly, it makes sense now. Most of the time, it wasn't even the adult instructors teaching it was little kids or students teaching the classes just the same forms over and over again. My boys were stuck doing the exact same thing for two years. No child deserves to be used as leverage in an adult's power trip. No parent should have to explain to their child why a grown man chose to take his frustration out on them. If you're a parent in the area, please be aware. We have been taking our child here for a few months now. I can't begin to describe how great it has been. It's a smaller studio space, but due to the set schedules they keep, you are allowed to pick and choose the classes you take. That gives us the flexibility to choose which days will fit best for our family. Some times we all have a bad day, and to be able to work around that and not have to pressure your child to take a set class due to it always being on a specific day/date has been so beneficial for us. The owners are amazing and accommodating, we have Neurodiversity in our family and the positive reinforcement techniques that they use really shows how important that is for children. They are more willing to learn and show respect because they are constantly being motivated and rewarded to do so. We are also involved in this continuation of using good deeds at home and at school as the children are then rewarded for these accomplishments at the end of class. (Tigers) this is great for the younger children and I have recommended RMA to so many parents already also struggling with more "traditional" sports and schedules. I know some may balk at this as an option, but it's been so much to our family. It is the cool sport in my mind! Also, the body balance improvements are palpable in our child. She could barely balance on one foot before the class, and now she impressed us everyday with her accomplishments in behavior and in her bodies abilities! Also, have to add that all of the instructors care so much about the children, they are always so approachable, they have been trained so well in getting the kids to listen. I'm always so impressed as many of the youngest kids seem to struggle, but in class...they become true little black belts! I think we will be sticking with this for a long time! read more

My toddler is a human version of the Tasmanian devil looney toon. His energy level is off the charts and I will likely not survive the winter of COVID without an energy outlet like this. The class creates a social space where the kids want to be disciplined and follow the instructor. It's fast paced so no one get bored and it kept the kiddos engaged. There were also several life lessons sprinkled throughout the class which was great to have as an added bonus. We are looking forward to our continued classes with Mr. J! read more

If zero stars was an option I would give this place zero stars. What started off as a good experience for my 5 year old quickly turned bad. We were members for about 6 months and she made it to the point were she was able to spar. She was constantly paired with children DOUBLE her weight. She started to not like going. We had a miscommunication with Mr. J and instead of addressing it with me in private he decided to address it with me in front of all the instructors. And by instructors I mean teenagers who have no business hearing the wrath of a pissed momma bear. Our miscommunication was blasted on Facebook! I have a rule that I will not let unprofessional people near my kids so I went to cancel our membership and they won't let me out of my contract! This place is a joke read more

We were members of ATA for over two years. We paid on time. We promoted the business. Our children were respectful students. We met our contractual obligation as of January 2016, investing nearly $6,000. During our children's blackbelt test in February, our 4th grade son was placed in a sparring situation, with three second-degree black belts, including a 7th grader. Our son was the sole target. He had never been trained for this and we had never witnessed anything like this during class or other belt tests. My biological instincts kicked in, knowing this was not right. I'm not a helicopter parent, but witnessing my son in the situation made me ill. Needless to say, he walked away with blood on his face and uniform. Throughout the test, which should have been a celebratory night for many, the atmosphere was rank with stress. It was an uncomfortable evening to say the least, and our son was shaken. When we approached the owners with our concerns, we were summoned into a last minute meeting, leaving no time to find childcare for our two-year-old. Being loyal members with a valid concern, we assumed the owners would validate and explain. Instead we were met with arrogance. "Let me explain something to you because your lack of understanding of martial arts training is going to backfire so listen up." "This isn't dance that's next door." The owner kicked us out of his office in less than ten minutes. The main instructor, whom our kids know, hardly said a word and only did so when he was summoned by the owner. It was the most bizarre situation we have encountered as adults. At one point, the owner refused to listen to me. He turned to my husband and said, "I'm not listening to her anymore. What is her answer?" I tried to calmly reason with him, but he continued to look to my husband to answer for me. We received a cancellation notice three days later, telling us we were also banned from the property that he rents and the dance studio next door (who owns the building). Again, we had paid our contract in full as of the month before. We sensed that this meeting could potentially turn into a "he said, she said", so we recorded it, in its entirety, in accordance with Minnesota's one party recording law. We spent five months of back and forth with BBB and ATA (published on website). At one point, we were threatened with a defamation lawsuit since the owner sees himself as a public figure. In the end, ATA refused arbitration. We have now contacted the Attorney General. If you're looking for a place that knows martial arts AND children, I highly recommend Gleisner's in Burnsville. She is a seventh degree black belt who has built her business for the last 20 years. She is strong and genuine, and the belt tests are positive high-energy. Our kids have enjoyed martial arts since the transition. If you ask many parents whose children attend Rosemount ATA, you will find they have a hard time getting their kids to go and even muster the energy themselves. read more

Great instructors and program offerings for kids and adults! I have attended a women's kickboxing program, a self-defense course with Moms and their daughters, and my kids have attended birthday parties and short programs. We love the variety of options available in addition to traditional martial arts belt programs. read more

Just finished my first self defense class with Mr. J. The class focused on women's self defense. I found the class very informative and a great introduction. The class was 90 minutes. In the fall they offer a 3 hour course that goes into more on how to handle yourself against weapons. Today's class focused on if you are grabbed or trapped on the ground. I'm going to come back for the 3 hours class and recommend this class to others. I was also paired with a student of Mr. J's so I got a little one on one instructions. When I asked her to really grabbed me, this student REALLY grabbed me. This allowed me to practice the pull away more realistically . I'll have some bruises, but I was really appreciative that she was willing to show me. Remember I asked her to grab me like this. I know others practiced the motions but didn't want to get that rough and Mr. J respected that. Wonderful way to spend a few hours. Very informative! read more
