We saw the masses of people slowly increase when we realized we were driving through the heart of a festival! Actual Impression (*****): The idea of letting traffic pass through made sense... and is really cool! We would have stopped if parking sections were clearer! We saw a spray painted $4.00 parking sign and didn't trust it. The food looked great - I wish I could have had bourbon chicken delivered to my car window! The animal artist had a really cool alligator (or crocodile?) Lasting Impression (****): I would return if I happen to be that far away from home. Looked fun!

My hometown library! So many fond memories of Saturday morning book readings, field trips, and…read moreafter-school programs. Though I no longer live in Jackson, I am a frequent visitor, and today the Jackson Public Library saved me with their free wifi! I was pleasantly surprised to find a fully open and free broadband network that would let me finish my work without the frustration of dialup or satellite internet. For the area, the library is well stocked and can usually order books if you ask. It has a very pleasant feel, though a bit on the warm side for me. The help desk was true it its name when I had asked about free wifi. Not only can you borrow books, but you're also able to send faxes, browse an amazing selection of local history, newspapers, and other periodicals, and hop one of the many computers available. If you find yourself in Jackson looking for a free network or wanting to bone up on your southern Ohio history, come to the public library! It's a great place to work for a few hours!

And it's interesting but not worth the journey, only because it's private property and the beautiful home is very well hidden behind big trees. The marker reads, "This classic Gothic Revival home built in the early 1850s, was one of Ohio's early wineries with terraced hillside vineyards overlooking the city of Chillicothe. From 1919 until his death in 1966, it served as the home and working studio of noted American craftsman, artist, and historian Dard Hunter. A major artistic contributor to the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early twentieth century, Hunter gained international recognition when in 1916 he became the first individual in the history of printing to produce all aspects of a book by hand. Eight of the twenty books he wrote on the history of paper were printed at this site. Hunter is regarded as the world's leading authority on the history of paper and his artistic achievements have had an enduring impact on American Graphic Arts." It is marker number 13-71 and it was erected 2003 by the Ohio Bicentennial Commission, Greater Cincinnati Foundation, and The Ohio Historical Society. No shorts above the knee are allowed for boys or girls! Vending machines are expensive. $5 for sandwich/wings $2 for something to drink dessert is $3.50 depending on what it is! So bring at least $35 just for them to eat and you need to get a vending card its $5 which it only takes a five dollar bill and gives u a $3 credit. If you wanna bring keys in only 2 keys allowed and you can bring a see through pouch or bag.

Finally got to actually see the festival after 6 years of marching it!! The Jackson Apple Fest…read moreholds a special place in my heart as one of the biggest parades I got to march in middle and high school, and the true appreciation the community has for the bands and other groups that perform. Actually walking through the festival, I have to admit, was a little disappointing. I love fair food as much as the next person, but I was really hoping to see more booths about the community, the apples, and maybe more music considering what an important role the marching bands play in this celebration. I saw only one booth selling apples, out of dozens of booths. I didn't see anything explaining the significance of apples to the festival or Jackson. Most of the booths were the same fair foods, church advertisements, or cheap Ali Express knick knacks sold at a higher price. The rides were squeakier than my hometown county fair's, so you definitely couldn't catch me on them. I definitely didn't hate the festival, but I just wish it had more community and celebration aside from the parade. From the band/marcher side, I was sad to see after several years, they still have not invested in more covers for the wires on the ground. Even as a pedestrian, I was tripping over them, and I remember how dreaded these wires were during parade marching. I really hope they cover these to avoid accidents and just provide easier mobility. The groups that perform deserve that. In my opinion, the parade is what makes this festival. Bands compete for ratings, but they also have fun and celebrate each other. I recommend coming after 7 for the parade. There are lots of floats, lights, and fantastic musicians. That is where I really feel community.

Where are the APPLES?! The Apple Festival has slowly turned into a fair. Good luck finding a candy…read moreapple in that place! Only found 2 places at the entire event that sold candy/caramel apples. What a let down. If someone opened an apple only kiosk they would corner the market. Truly a let down. There's always the pumpkin show which never fails to disappoint.

The marker stands in front of the Ross County Courthouse and while this building is new, it's in the spot where the courthouse used to be. The marker reads, "Ross County's first courthouse was Ohio's first statehouse. The courthouse was erected on the Public Square in 1801. Thomas Worthington, one of the building's superintendents, laid out the foundation. Chillicothe was the last capital of the Northwest Territory, and the final session of the territorial legislature met in the courthouse in 1801. Ohio's first constitution was written here in 1802. On March 1, 1803, Ohio's first General Assembly convened in the building, making it the statehouse. During a time of strained relations between Native Americans and settlers in Ohio, the great Shawnee leader Tecumseh delivered a speech here in 1807 to reassure citizens that the Indians would remain peaceful. The courthouse served as the statehouse from 1803 to 1810 and from 1812 to 1816. The building was razed in 1852 to make way for the present courthouse."
