I was referred to Velez by another attorney. I am disabled & low-income. I hired Kelsey for an…read moreissue w/ spousal maintenance. I am in a different state, so the hiring & talking was on the phone or email. The first time I met Kelsey in person was months into the process. Our first in-person meeting was in her office, during the day, during business hours. She was wearing pajama pants & a t-shirt. Didn't exactly inspire confidence. The very first words out of her mouth were "I thought you'd be more frail." Sorry, Kelsey, not every disability is visible. I left wanting to fire her immediately. But we were already months into it for a fairly clear-cut case. The first court hearing, I show up & she asks if I reviewed what she wanted me to say. I never received anything to study for court. I'd never been to court. She spins a 2" binder around & tells me to look it over before court in 5 min. I was totally unprepared. Over the course of the next 17 months, things continued to get worse, but I decided to stick w/ her because it was always "just one more thing." I was being billed 2 & 3 times for the same paperwork, the same conversations. I wasn't getting emails. I received an offer from my ex to settle with a 24-hour expiration. I didn't hear about it for 22 DAYS because Kelsey was out for Christmas for 3 WEEKS. In the middle of a case. When I'd bring these issues to her attention she'd get defensive & blame me somehow for not getting HER email. I pulled tanesia into the discussion as the owner. We had an in-person meeting. I PROVED it was Kelsey's mistakes. She was sending my info to the wrong email address. No apology. Taniesa kept getting up from the table to take phone calls & then left the meeting early. I was billed $291 for the privilege of pointing out THEIR mistakes. Math mistakes, billing mistakes, fact mistakes, etc. From then on, Kelsey told me she was quitting as my lawyer after the final hearing. I was in complete agreement to part ways but she immediately stopped doing ANYTHING. The last sentencing hearing everything was to be wrapped in a bow & finished. Except Kelsey decided not submit the final lawyers fees affadavit so it's still not over & I have no lawyer, which honestly is probably better than having Kelsey & tanisia. Every idea, every strategy came from ME because my lawyer was too lazy to do anything more than the minimum. I fought with my lawyers more than my ex. She discouraged me from going after lawyer's fees. (I won $10,000). 17 months, $12,000 & major stress later, the case isn't done & I have to hire another lawyer. These 20-something's playing lawyer have NO clue what they're doing & what's even more dangerous, they are so argumentative that they'll never learn from anyone else. Facts matter. Deadlines matter. Taking more than basic required interest in a case matters. Looking at your Facebook account as we are sitting in court, totally unprofessional. My advice? Hire a grown-up. There are none at this office.
