It was the biggest sticking point for me before I went and I took more than my fair share of persuasion before I went. On my first and last visit, I was with friends who have frequented the place more than once so I followed behind them and did as they did. It's really not the sort of place I would ever visit again. You can bring your own alcohol which makes it more bearable. However, I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable throughout it as it just is not my sort of thing. Ironically Shisha is meant to help you relax. For some people, this is the perfect place to go and chill out and for that reason you are welcome to it. I would rather a pub and a club to loosen myself up. It can often be over used but this is the epitome of 'you'll like it if it's your sort of thing'. It's not mine and I really did not enjoy it.

It's bring your own which makes it quite cheap as well and because it's Shisha, it can be smoked inside, which is very convenient. On the night we went there was an acoustic session going on which added to the very chilled out atmosphere. Apparently it's been having some licensing issues but hopefully that can be sorted out. It's a great place to chill at lunch or for a night out.

Our tour group (20 adults) felt the immediate diversity in this town, the moment we entered. We were turned away from this bar as well as several others in the area from having an Irish southerner as our guide. We couldn't wait to get away from the bad vibes and go towards a more positive part of town. (AKA not protistan territory). Shame on Filthy McNasty, who clearly lives up to their name.

Not an impatient sigh to be heard so definitely a good start. We were lucky in getting our seats at the window and enjoyed the beautiful views of the sea and cliffs, just breathtaking. I was equally delighted by the fact thatthey serve mini bottles of Chardonnay as most bars seem to serve only that vinegary muck known as sauvignon. This isn't a place where you would go for a heavy one, it really is aimed at onward travellers, it's just like an airport bar. There's loads of comfy seating and plenty of tables with views over The Lagan (hence the name). They even have a screen stating all train arrival and departure times. Not really my cup of tea, but I think it's really handy if you have time to kill in Central Station.

The frickles were unimpressive and most of our group didn't care for the hummus (plus the bread was just 2 thin tortillas that had been toasted and cut). The chili chicken was decent but nothing to rave about and the calamari type dish was just bland. Maybe we caught them on an off night but if that's the case I would think the servers could step up and at least be friendly. Most staffers looked the other way or were just not accommodating.

It has gone from great to terrible and then back up to pretty decent (thank goodness!!). The anticipated and exciting refurb turned out to be a fairly big flop. It will remind most of a hotel lobby downstairs, and the 'quirky granny look' upstairs - ya know, with velvet, gold and leopard print everywhere. Ugh. Until tonight (26th Feb 16), I have felt fairly letdown with the place, but we tried yet again and were pleasantly surprised. Food was great, service was great and we had a really nice night here. I am excited to see the place has changed their attitude and getting back to what works well. My old review, just before refurbishment - In my opinion The Esplanade is now one of the nicest places in Bangor to eat. Food is tremendous with large portions and an amazing view to go with it over Ballyholme bay. Even if you aren't having food, it is a great place to hang out with friends and catch up. Driving in at first doesn't impress and it begs the question, am I in the right place ? The red brick building looks old next to the very modern Titanic Museum. But, once you enter this amazingly beautiful back in time hotel, you know it is really something to write about when visiting Northern Ireland ! The decor is so tastefully done to transport you back to the days of the launching of the Titanic. From the ocean liner lamps to the rivets on the doors. From the grand open air bar to the ocean liner models. All will impress you and bring you back in time. There is also plenty of open space to sit and relax or even play a game of chess ! Our room had a California King size bed with a beautiful art deco black/white tile bathroom. Our room was bright and airy with notably high ceilings. Nice 55" flat screen tv and a nice desk. Good closet space as well a room safe. Note: One thing I didn't like was the standard European low water pressure for the shower ! Plus, be very careful entering and exiting the tub/shower. Slipping is very possible. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The dining area is clean and the food is good. There is even a window to look into the kitchen galley to see the food being prepared ! I would definitely stay here the next time I'm in Belfast !

The dinner food that was served left a lot to be desired. My main entree was a bit overcooked and therefore was dry. I asked for extra sauce and after an enormous time waiting for it, I finally asked the server what happened and she said they ran out and the the cooked just made enough for the meals that were prepared. So therefore both food and service was a fail.
