We flew from Santa Barbara to Edinburgh over Thanksgiving by way of Seattle and London. Our son lives in Edinburgh and the last 2 times we have visited him, British Airways has lost our luggage. One time, we didn't get it back until 3 weeks later, just a few days before our departure. The luggage sitch in EDI is an utter nightmare, and has been the subject of numerous travel articles I've read. So, this trip, I was ready for it and had bought and tucked some Apple AirTags into our check-in bags. I noticed when we departed Seattle that it looked like hubby's luggage was still in Seattle, while mine was clearly on the plane. I mentioned it to him, but he wasn't concerned, saying the app was not updating or some such other techno BS. Hours later, over the polar cap, I noticed his bag was still in Seattle, while mine was in the plane and suggested again that his bag was "lost" in Seattle. Nah, he replied. The software wasn't working properly. Now, hubby is a senior software developer and he spent a good chunk of his career as an Apple developer. So, this guy was telling me that the tech wasn't working on an Apple product? Ha! So, I wagered a friendly bet and we shook on it. If his luggage was on the plane and not lost in Seattle, I would treat him to whatever he wanted to do in Edinburgh. But, if his luggage was lost in Seattle as I believed and the AirTag indicated, then he would owe me a whisky tour of Edinburgh, something I've always wanted to do. Hours later we landed in London and could clearly see my bag was with us and his was in Seattle, but the BA desk could not confirm that and hubby stuck to his guns that the software wasn't working properly. Meanwhile, I was planning my whisky tour! Well, you can guess the next part. One short flight to Edinburgh and we arrived on a cold, wet night and guess whose bag didn't make it? And guess who won her whisky tour bet?!!! I'm not really much for organized tours, so I decided to create my own whisky tour and it was fabulous! Here's how it worked... Having had a major foot surgery about 6 months before the trip, I would periodically have some foot pain, what with all the cobblestones and hills in Edinburgh. Whenever that happened, we would stop into a pub and ask the bartender to give me a double shot of his or her favorite, smoothest peaty scotch whisky, along with some sparkling water. I ignored the smirks I got over the sparkling water, which a Scot would NEVER put in their whisky, and I wound up drinking some wonderful whisky that way and learned a lot about them from the bartenders! At one stop, the bartender met with my request by serving me Raasay, which was hands down the best scotch whisky I had on my self-directed whisky tour!. The Raasay is produced and distilled on the Isle of Raasay. It is a single malt, lightly peated scotch whiskey, balanced with rich, dark fruity flavors. A few days before we left Scotland, I began the search for where I could buy the Raasay batch RO2.1 to take home with me. I tried a few places, but they either didn't carry Raasay or didn't have the same batch. That is, until I walked into Royal Mile Whiskies. Not only did they carry the Raasay, but they had the right batch. They also offered me another similar whisky to sample that they thought I might like, and I did, so I bought that one too! It was an easy transaction and they beautifully packed up my whisky purchases in bubble bags to fit safely in my luggage all the way back to CA! Also, I noticed the price I paid was the same as Raasay has on their website and was not more expensive just because I bought it on the Royal Mile. I got home with unbroken whisky in my luggage and have enjoyed the heck out of it. Next time I'm back in Edinburgh, I'll be stopping in for more Raasay and whisky recommendations from the knowledgeable and very accommodating staff. It remains to be seen if hubby will wager an AirTag bet with me again, but here's hoping! read more

Friends love this place, and the selection is indeed good and the staff knowledgeable. But they have a ton of competition that's just as good, some with selections that may more match your palate. And I think that's where I ended up not fitting, their selections didn't quite match what I had in mind. Not going to blame them (or anyone) per se but definitely had a better experience at some of their competitors, some of whom definitely were a bit more spacious and less cramped as well. read more

I was visiting my sister, who lives in Leith, and I wanted to ship a bottle of something not available in the U.S. to my colleagues back home. Mark at Royal Mile Whiskies took the time to listen to what I wanted and to help me find the perfect bottle at a great price. I was concerned about shipping costs, especially since another Royal Mile shop had quoted a huge amount, and when told RMW had given a better price over the phone, fibbed and told us RMW just dispatches from a U.S. warehouse, rather than shipping. (I won't name the other shop - but it rhymes with 'Bisky Whale'). We went away happy with our choice, the cost, and most especially the service. I visited ALL the major and minor whisky shops in Old Town and Royal Mile area, and this is where I purchased my whisky. Hands down the most friendly, helpful place I visited. Some shops did not even greet me upon entering, but I was in this one twice and both times they were well staffed with friendly and helpful folks. You have to understand that if you buy whisky in Edinburgh in this area, you are going to be paying high prices, but the prices here were slightly less than the other shops. Even had the best selection of bourbon of all the shops - not good, but better than the others. Highly recommend! read more

We were recommended Royal Mile Whiskies from a liquor store in North Berwick. We were searching for the Loch Lomond whisky and we were told that Royal Mile Whiskies would have it at a reasonable price. We stopped in and were greeted by a very friendly woman who did a small whisky tasting for us to help us decide which ones to buy. She was very kind and knowledgeable. We ended up buying 6 bottles of whisky and they ship to the USA so that made it even better. We stopped by a few other whisky shops on the Royal Mile and this one by far had the best prices. I like whisky shops so when I set foot in this one I was very excited but didn't know too much about any of it, luckily, my friend does (this is when she comes into play) and she was over the moon with selection dating back over 150 years. I am not a huge whisky fan but I came here (pretty much dragged!) with a foreign friend who wanted to have the full Scottish experience and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Situated on the Royal Mile, Royal Mile Whiskies is in the ideal location to attract all the tourists and when I visited, it was heaving with primarily American tourists. This store appears to stock every single make of Scottish whisky ever made. This is a great place to pick up a gift for someone as their whiskys span a huge price ranging - starting at about £15 for a bottle and going way up to over £100. Royal Mile Whiskies also sell the tiny wee miniature bottle of whisky are fantastic if you don't want to fork out for a bigger bottle. I was looking for buying some original scotch for taking back to US. Visited many stores before landing up here and after visiting here did not have to look any further. Its location is right in the middle of Royal Mile Island and on a weekend specially the outside street was very busy with visitors and tours going on - inside it's a small store but with a large selection of whiskies and spirits. Whisky here is spelt without an 'e' unlike in US where it is normally whiskey. The staff was extremely friendly and as I was browsing around looking at the displays they asked if I needed any help. Were knowledgeable and made suggestions and gave me choices in different price ranges. I was looking at buying something local & unique and they gave comparisons based on the places and choices available in US. I found their prices to be fair. Since my knowledge was limited they explained to me the liquors, blends, barrels, aging and meaning of "Scotch". I bought one from them and they also packed it in bubble warp and a box which made it so easy for me to pack in my check in baggage. The whisky which I brought was a huge success and was liked a lot. One can also order online and they will ship it. If you have space you can save on the shipping cost by buying and bringing internationally since you do not have to pay VAT. Overall it all comes to the buying experience which was quite satisfactory. Would highly recommend it to anyone interested in getting Scotch. read more

There isn't an enormous amount to say about Royal Mile Whiskies that hasn't already been covered. They know their stuff, they have a good selection of spirits and beers, the staff are very friendly. I especially appreciated coming in here with my mom who wanted to get something which she couldn't get at home (USA), and the person who was helping us was able to rattle off a list of options. I was cautious entering this place because some reviews said they were stuffy and not welcoming. I found the complete opposite. I entered the place in the middle of summer with a plethora of tourist roaming about outside. I walked around inside the relatively small space and no one bothered me, until I asked one of the gentlemen to help recommend some scotch. We talked about what I liked to drink and I also told him my budget, which I find important in these places where you can spend thousands on scotch. After a brief discussion another older lady came along and started pouring me samples of the scotches we were discussing. I also found their prices to be decent and offer an online shop to ship to the states, which comes in handy since you can only take so much scotch home in your luggage. Overall I was extremely impressed and recommend to anyone who is serious about the scotch to check them out while in Scotland. read more

Prices are reasonable and the customer service is the best. They have a great selection of Scotch Whisky and will let you try a wee dram or two while you're shopping. Now, I don't know a whiskey from a hole in the road and this -yes I know- is a very, very bad thing indeed. That being said, these gents were quite nice to a somewhat befuddled Dutch girl walking in at 7pm sighing that she needed whiskey but didn't know which kind. Now what is even more remarkable is that said gents stayed kind, showing no signs of arrogance or annoyance, when they proceeded to attempt a full-body explanation of the delight that is whiskey. When the bemused blond girl put on the puppy eyes, looked even more confused, and asked what single malt was, they gave up and started showing the girl various bottles. In the end, the slightly befuddled -and now tipsy- blond girl walked away with a very, very good single malt 12 year old whiskey, that her brother-in-law will surely love. How does she know it was a very good whiskey you ask? Well, it's 5 hours later, I only tasted the tail-end of a shot glass and I can still feel it in my veins. That cannea be bad, aye? read more

For my Dad's 50th I wanted to get him something special. For some reason I thought going to a fancy Whiskey store and buying him Whiskey would be special. I failed to recognise the fact my Dad doesn't drink Whiskey, but that isn't really important. Its the thought that counts? My American friend recommended this place as she had used it while holidaying in Edinburgh. Okay so my Whiskey knowledge consists of Bells, Dewars and Famous Grouse. But apparently there is like a trillion different kinds from a tonne of different countries and that is what this shop stocks. It all gets very confusing as there is single malt, bourbon, malt and it goes on. So I was happy that some charming fellow took pity upon me and helped me choose. He explained the different types and all the hullaboo surrounding the age and the way its distilled. I ended up just asking for something fancy and in my price range. I have no idea what I purchased because it is all too complicated for my simple vodka drinking mind, all I know is it cost £50. I'm not a whisky drinker and in fact, even the smell of it makes me feel sick. I worked for a catering company when I was at school and I remember having to walk around with trays of various different whiskies for people to take. Every single person asked me which was which and even though I should have arranged them in a manner that made it easy to remember - I didn't. So ended up just making whiskies up... I wasn't fooling anyone. After my whisky experience I still really am none the wiser about any of them but I've bought a few bottles in my time for retirement presents and such. This store is jam packed and looks very traditional, with all kind of whiskies, they also have other spirits too including a good selection of gins (my favourite), I guess whisky is their speciality though and I'm sure whatever whisky you're looking for you'll find it in here. Great for a souvenir from Scotland, a gift for a whisky drinker or great if you just fancy treating yourself to fancy new bottle of your favourite whisky. read more

I do not know very much about whiskey and I was in need of buying a gift for a friend. Originally, I went into the Whisky Trail store to ask for help and was given the cold shoulder, no help, and worse off the guy in that store sold me a whiskey that not only can you purchase in the US, BUT, you can purchase it for cheaper in stores in Edinburgh as well as cheaper in the US. Frustrated, I went to this shop, the Royal Mile Whiskies and I cannot reccomend this shop or their employees enough! They took the time, collaboratively, to find the exact whiskey for me to buy. They listened to my requests and then spent the time to explain different types of whiskey, what each region meant, the history behind brands and names. It was above and beyond! I felt as though they cared about the whiskey, my experience, and my friends experience getting the gift. Hands down the best place to buy your whiskey!!! Stopped in to do a "little" shopping and I the keeper was super friendly and took time to walk me around, discuss what they had and what nippy likes are and what I was looking for, price ranges I wanted to spend in etc. walked away have 6 bottles shipped home....worth the convenience. Actually don't have to pay the VAT if going international and this more than covered the shipping cost ( I would have most likely not filled out the paper work otherwise to get this back at airport). Their selection is out of this world, including an amazing selection of rare and unusual Scotch, plus everything else you might expect. What I didn't expect, especially in such a touristy area, was the personal and thoughtful service I received. The employees are passionate about Scotch, and are happy to spend as much time as you like helping you find some new favorite malts. It was a wonderful experience. MAIL ORDER TO USA: I have placed a few orders to be shipped to my California USA residence, and was equally amazed at their service. My most recent order was for four bottles with a shipping cost of about $12 USD per bottle -- very reasonable! And I placed my order on a Wednesday and it arrived the very next Monday! Well this may be reviewed and changed depending on their decision but right now I am LIVID...! I ordered a £90 bottle of whisky and on the website it said that it was in stock. Although the delivery charge was a hefty £7.60 or something I really love the whisky and thought it worth the carriage. I got an email response to say my order was received and being dealt with. When it is despatched I should have received confirmation of this with tracking details but I did not. 2 weeks later, still after having no email, phone call or anything from them I decide to write an email to find out where it is. I get a fairly blunt response telling me that they will NOT send it back to me without me paying delivery all over again and that they think they have carried out everything they should to ensure a delivery. The courier company allegedly tried to deliver twice, but of course they neglected to leave any card or number for me to contact them on either occasion..... I have serious doubts they tried, or found the correct address. I signed up to their website and joined their mailing list as a new customer and this is how they treat new business???? Wow... just wow.... I thought the customer was king? IF they come to their senses and realise they have made an error here then I will happily review this rating, but right now I am little short of disgusted. Okay - fair play I had a call back and they have agreed to resend the bottle out early next week. The guy I spoke to - I think it was Colin - was very helpful and explained what about the procedures. Perhaps Colin should deal with the customer service aspect from now on? I just hope the courier makes it here this time so I can get hold of my whisky finally!!! read more

Royal Mile Whiskies is a great place to visit to buy Scotch. They have a great selection (as long as you're looking for whiskey!) and, even more importantly, they have great customer service. Martin helped us navigate the challenging world of Scotch whiskey, explaining the difference between barrels, aging, and what "Scotch" really means (we even tried a few small samples).
