Parking and access was easy, and the interior was lovely- the vine leaves all around the ceilings made it stand out from other pubs I've visited. Where we were seated we could see the outside seating area, and the ajoining vast grass patch and a view of the city in the distance- which was gorgeous! We only ordered starters and side orders of chips- my other half said the BBQ chicken wings lacked a little taste but my pate was gorgeous, and the chip portions were generous. First things first: this place has changed greatly since its been relaunched - all thoughts of the horror that was the Turnpike should be immediately forgotten. The musical policy is a mix of up and coming local bands and DJs, combined with national faves who may appeal to a slightly older generation (Miles Hunt, Wreckless Eric, John Squire, Don Letts, Jerry Dammers). The garden has also been completely revamped and is very family friendly, especially on Sundays when they serve up the best roast I've had in years. Also recommend are the irregular DJ Derek and northern soul nights.

It is difficult to imagine that this beautifully painted building with artfully created interiors and well furnished garden used to be a iniquitous dive frequented by the kind of people that you would go out of your way to avoid. These days the friendly staff are more accustomed to serving young families in the afternoons, particularly at the weekends when excellent food is in offer, and a devoted music crowd by night, when this local pub opens its doors to some heavyweight performers, often of international acclaim. A good selection of fine ales and ciders at reasonable prices keep the locals coming back. Dave, the owner, is more partial to a glass of wine, and so there's a decent selection of wine by the glass or bottle as well. The place is run in a very hands-on fashion, lending the place a very definite fraternal feel, but is in no way exclusive. All-comers are made to feel very welcome in this genuinely relaxed and friendly pub where traditional values are preserved. I called in fr a quick drink and a chat a week or so ago and noticed that Babel, my favourite Bristol band, are playing The Thunderbolt on the 15th May. Tickets are £5adv... a bargain! Humbug has a pleasant outdoor terrace, an amusing iguana statue by the entrance and a decent soundtrack - what more could you ask for? Well, perhaps a tiny bit more personality. At last check the food wasn't particularly fantastic, although this was a while ago so I imagine it's changed since then. The atmosphere inside can be a little bit on the cold side, this isn't a spot for friendly drunken conversations. The decor is fine, the drinks are all right priced, there just seems to be a little something missing from this place. It's tasteful enough but I can't see how it would ever be anyone's favourite bar as everything it does well, somewhere else does it better.

Since I moved to Totterdown, a lot of pubs and bars in the area have been renovated, but still none…read moreof them are good enough to match the original and best. The Shakey is very much a local pub with a friendly, lively atmosphere. This is mainly due to their love of music, as local DJs play an eclectic (and loud!) mix of alternative sounds on weekends (there's a legendary music quiz on Wednesdays too). If this all gets too much, you can always retire to the garden and there's seating out the front too, which is handy as this pub always seems to be busy. A little rough around the edges maybe, but us faithful locals wouldn't have it any other way.

It might be a local pub for local people but the Shakey is a wonderful "proper" pub. It hasn't dollied itself up like some of the other pubs in the area and retains an old-fashioned pub feel. The success of the Shakey is thanks to the fantastic landlord Warwick, a down to earth chap with a love of music. The Shakey has open-mic nights, music quiz nights, dj nights, live music nights and even a poker night! It has a great beer garden and fairy lights strung up around and has a romantic feeling to it on a warm summers eve, possibly due to the ale influenced spectacles I was wearing. A fantastic pub without a bone of pretension in its body. As real pubs go its the "proper job".

It's only a tiny pub but it attracts a lot of locals, which adds to the sense of community (there's usually a dog sniffing around after a tennis ball that people are throwing from each end of the pub). They have loads of board games to choose from, and a massive selection of Empire magazines, which is perfect for nerds like me. They have a great selection of cider and red wine as well, but really this is a vintage pub of which there are not too many left. By that I mean it hasn't been bought and kitted out with a shiny, soulless new interior and a 'gastro' style kitchen that focus on the garnish on your burger more than the quality of the pint in your hand. Although I live…read moreround the corner, this is definitely a place filled with those who've been in the area for a lot longer than four months, gathering round an excellent selection of beers and wines in a cosy, fairy lit atmosphere. The eclectically decorated walls are plastered over with beer mats from all over the world. There's also beautiful old original Victorian fittings which add a real sense of character. I was particularly impressed by the selection of Belgian beers (the owner is a fan), with all the matching glasses to boot. This is clearly run by someone who appreciated their alcohol, and bar staff tend to have a lot to say on the matter too, Although there never seems to be anyone in there, The Victoria is the perfect place to sit down on a wet and windy night to sip on a couple of 10% Kasteels.

Their food is organic and very tasty. They aren't mean on their portion size either. They have six beers on at a time, often Gem, Doom Bar and Deuchers IPA and last time I went they had Golden Hare and Butcombe. They have a full bar, interestingly some vegan wine, and live jazz on a Monday (8-10pm) which means they get a mixed crowd of friendly crusties, backpackers staying upstairs and those who like food and beer which is not a bad thing. Vibe is always friendly and chatty. I have felt comfortable here as a couple and with a group of about 20 of us trying to organise a new year party whilst eating lunch and having a beer - the staff handled our comings and goings with ease. Pub is open til 11-ish (12-ish on the weekends) and they have the next door Attic Bar for later nights.

For chilled largers and perfectly cooked organic steaks head for the Full Moon pub on the opposite side of the courtyard. Fancy a kip in a comfy (if basic) room for less than forty quid a night? Head upstairs to the hostel. To top it all - they play host to the Bristol festival, Drum 'n' Bass nights and great gigs - officially the hottest venue in the 'up and coming' Stokes Croft area right now, and deservedly so, methinks.
