This may be the finest dinosaur museum in the world! Our six year old daughter wanted to stay and watch the nice lady who was patiently working on freeing a fossil from it's rock. I had to point out that she had been working on it for six months already and probably wouldn't be done that day. My only quibble is with the fact that they mount (duplicate) dinosaur fossils in concrete in lifelike poises giving the impression that that is how they are found instead of looking like a pile of pickup sticks. As everyone has noted, Drumheller is basically a full day drive back and forth from Calgary. It's fun to take the circle drive around including the badlands, the little church, and the ferry - but the museum is the main attraction. A service offering plane rides back and forth from Calgary could probably make some money. read more

I never get tired of this place. Every time I visit, there is always something cool to learn about our past. You can easily spend a couple hours touring the museum and taking in the countless free and pay tours available. read more

What a wonderful place to take the kids to explore. Its educational and fun! I also recommend it for adults, good prices and beautifully maintained. If you haven't been, I recommend it at least once in your life. Tip: There is also a play area outside the museum with picnic tables and if its a hot day the sprinkler park is not to far as well. read more

I live museums and Tyrrell has been in my life since early childhood. When I went back after the rebuild recently having not been there in years I was excited to see what had changed. The museum is beautiful, fun, informative and even a little scary. The Tyrrell museum is a reason for Alberta pride. The exhibits are just as interesting for adults as they are for kids. They have added multiple areas for kids to play with interactive items that teach as well as entertain all throughout the museum. The whole time I was there I could here kids laughing and many wows escaping mouths. As an adult there was lots to look at too. There are hand sanitation stations throughout the museum which I found handy since I have a bad immune system. The souvenir shop had clothes, books, stuffed animals and loads of science experiments and fun items at I think pretty reasonable prices. I highly suggest having a walk on the paths around the museum. In the summer the paths are filled with curious little surprises and breathtaking scenes. Watch out for dinosaurs! You never know what lurks around the corner;) read more

The Royal Tyrrel Museum is the place to go to see dinosaurs. While you can't see them in their natural habitat like in Jurassic Park, at the Tyrrel you can see their impressive skeletons in the location where a lot of them ended up. The museum itself is great even for non-dino fans, and you can even catch a glimpse of paleontologists working away in the lab with the bones. The only downside is that it's not exactly conveniently located: I've come to Alberta many times to visit family, and it was only on the last trip that we made time to drive out to Drumheller to see the museum. (I was constantly promised a trip out there as a kid, back when I was heavily into dinosaurs.) But even the drive is interesting, as it takes you through the fascinating geography of the Alberta Badlands. read more

This was so educational and neat. The exhibits were very cool, it was nice to get to watch the paleontologists and their staff working on fossils. I learned so much here. I was not initially enthusiastic about going here but boy was I glad we did! Recommended for kids of all ages :) read more

Such a great museum, not ideal for small children unless in a stroller, there are no interactive play areas so they can get quite bored.

It is really well done - only comment would be a family washroom and an interactive area for 2-5 year olds - in the main museum there isn't a lot to touch, feel or explore for this age group. read more

The ultimate dinosaur museum. I particularly like the way that most items in the exhibit make interesting teaching points. The only drawback is that there is too much information to absorb in one visit and there is no museum exhibit book with that information in the gift shop, at least when I was there. read more

Was visiting Banff earlier this month and was told of this place. Being that i'm a doting dad of two baby T-Rex tots I decided to make the trip. For starters, this place is in the middle of the beefsteak backwoods. It took me almost 90+ minutes of flat slabbing once I got off the interstate to get here. Pretty weird to see glacial lakes, corn field country and bad lands all in the space of 2 hours. So how does this place compare to the competition ? Well junior thought the one in LA had more variety overall while the one in Salt Lake had more exhibits. Yeah I know he's kinda hard to please, even his hairdresser says so but it is what it is and you can't blame him for speaking the truth. Anyway this place is not too big and he was done faster than the time it took me to find a parking spot once i got here. Yet this place is new and I'm sure they'll grow bigger (& better) as time passes. read more

This museum is always packed with families, as it's the go to place to go to in Drumheller. It's nice to look around inside and there's enough lighting on most exhibits to take photos of without the need of flash. Flash photography is allowed too if that's your thing. No tripods allowed inside. The museum staff is friendly, but some of the younger staff members in the cafeteria have the "don't give a damn" attitude. Edgy teenage issues aside, could they at least clean the tables properly? Also the washrooms within the museum too, aren't very clean. The one near the cafeteria was alright but further inside it was just gross. Let's talk more about the cafeteria. It's got a nice selection of food for everyone in the family, and there are some seats outside. The gift shop has the usual touristy gift stuff that you'd expect, and it connects to the exhibits. Depending on which route you start on, you'll start from the gift shop or end your visit at the gift shop. read more

Would have given my experience 5 stars, however the inconsiderate actions of the staff made my visit less enjoyable. Groups of staff members stood around together throughout the museum loudly making inappropriate jokes and comments which took away from my experience. read more

Took our toddler here after the Reptile Museum. Should have done it reverse. My son thought that the dinosaurs were alive! Fortunately one of the security staff suggested we do the visit backwards and enter through he gift shop. Was a great suggestion as he defrosted to the idea of seeing the dinosaurs after and we had more time to explain that these reptiles were not alive like the previous place we had just visited. . read more

I'm sure it would probably be great IF you could actually SEE any of the exhibits. Due to the massive crowds, we saw practically nothing and finally forced our way through the crowd and left after only 30 minutes. Too bad that the museum puts entrance money ahead of providing an enjoyable and educational experience. I shudder to think of the consequences had there been a fire or other emergency there. Dozens of people would have been trampled to death in the panic. Lots of future fossils........... read more

Phenomenal! The intricacies of the exhibits are expertly designed. The art flows perfectly. The actual exhibit halls are tastefully executed, and we enjoyed seeing the local fossils displayed so proudly -- they are certainly impressive! Bonus: The prairie dog villages surrounding the museum, the trails, and the badlands in general. Alberta is a treasure. read more

World-class museum and is a must-see. Best to avoid peak hours as it can get seriously crowded. Besides the fantastic galleries, there are a variety of other programs to do at the museum that are the perfect mix of educational and entertaining. Great walking trails too! read more

This is the greatest museum in the whole world (at least that I've been to anyway!). If you haven't been here, and if you like dino's, you absolutely HAVE to go. The price is reasonable, the museum is pretty sizable (I'd recommend at least 2 hrs be budgeted for the museum itself), the gift shop is decent as such things go. Every single time I'm in Alberta, I'm not happy unless I get to stop here. Go there! Also, the badlands area around the musuem is interesting to hike (although not recommended in the summer, it's too bloody hot!). My only complaint is the signage to find the museum is utterly and horribly terrible. Every time I've come here, you'd think I'd have learned by now, I get lost trying to find the turnoff to the museum. The City of Drumheller just needs to do a better job indicating where the museum is, especially considering that the only real reason ANYONE ever goes to Drumheller is for the Tyrrell. read more
