Removing myself from the usual spots in the city we tried Crave in Morningside. Situated in a pretty quiet spot, the site itself was light and airy with tall ceilings and is a lot larger than the pictures presented. Extremely busy upon arriving, we added our names to the list, and as accurately estimated by the host the wait was only around 15mins for a table. Between the four of us eating, there were a few hits and misses. Upon being served, two of us received our meals before the other two with about a 3min wait between dishes served which is always a tad awkward watching other people eat before yours is served. Almost after always ordering the Mushroom on Toast dish today wasn't too far from the norm by choosing the Fungi from the menu. Instead of your standard toast option, it was served on a delicious kumara and feta cake, however the herb garlic cream was very lack lustre. It didn't give me that feeling that I wanted more and really missed that umph and body and was fairly under seasoned. It's a shame because the concept was there and presentation was a beaut. If I could make one recommendation, please serve it on a plate and not a bowl, it's frustrating to try scoop the last few bits with a fork and knife. The rest of the dining party were happily pleased with their tasty meals, with each dish having a modern switch up to your classic eggs bene and scrambled eggs. We agreed it would have been great to have a slice of toast or a hash served with the Cottled Egg just to tie the dish together. Otherwise overall the service was on point and friendly topping off a satisfied feeling upon leaving. I follow both of them on instagram and their pictures are always incredible - who knew healthy food could look so good! Anyway, three weeks after opening I finally made it to their new store in for lunch with Dad. It's a lot smaller than I expected with a row of window seats and a couple of tables outside. All up, it would seat 15pax max. As for the food, they had three options - all of which came in takeaway containers. Dad went for a vegetarian noodle salad, which was kind of like a healthy pad thai. He seemed pretty chuffed with his choice and after stealing a forkful, I understood why! Full of flavour, fresh, light, delicious. I opted for the tomato, lentil and preserved lemon soup, which came with a warm bread roll and butter. A real winter warmer! We couldn't resist sharing a piece of raw, vegan tiramisu cheesecake to finish. It was expensive but pretty incredible. A nutty base with smooth layers of coffee and vanilla sprinkled with raw cacao powder. A fabulous addition to Kingsland! Stop in for coffee and cake on a sunny day or pick up lunch to takeaway.

I do like the option to choose the type of bagel you want. I'm a sucker for salmon, so I chose the Classic bagel. It was a nice change since the salmon was cooked rather than raw. My dining partner chose the Wilbur bagel which was an unusual bagel filling with a spiced pulled pork. Again like Burger Burger, this was a very messy bagel to eat although tasty. We also had to try the Peanut butter and salted caramel smoothie. For $7 this was quite reasonable with the unique flavours and great flavour. Seating was very limited so we had to takeaway. I ejected it from my mouth at speed. and the tomatoe was over cooked. Not even a whisper of butter on my sour dough toast. My partner also had the same. He said his spuds raw and cold. And same sausage problem. His toast was not only dry but rock hard. The eggs tasted....odd. Almost no flavour. You'll be hard pressed to find me spending another $60 here. I think a McMuffin would have been nicer. Rad, you've really let your self go. Super disappointed.

The cafe itself is not very large, but they still seem to be able to fit a lot of us in. Just don't expect to have loads of time to chill after eating, as you can feel bad for the people waiting! I like how they provide you water when you arrive, and I generally like the service that the staff provide us. They seem to all enjoy working there. The food is a bit funky, as in they are usually relatively common meals but with a bit of a twist, to keep you on your toes. I quite enjoy the pumpkin omelette with a side of potato gratin. They have both gluten free and vegetarian options available. An outside table works well for people who come along with their doggos - not nice during bad weather, but most of the time it's lovely to be outside and have the option of bringing your dog (i.e. good pit stop on a walk for example). It's not crazy expensive, as well. Not cheap, either, but I'd say it was about average breakfast prices. Will definitely be going back!

(Sadly, probably due to the fact that I do not hang out in Kingsland as often as I would like). We arrived at The Fridge around 2.30pm on a Saturday. We decided on a hot drink and a sweet cake. [Side note: I had previously read every review of The Fridge online, so thought it would be interesting to go for afternoon tea instead of breakfast/brunch as this is what most of the reviewers had wrote about]. Service was friendly when we walked in. Not overly attentive, but not distant either. The first thing you notice is the large cabinet by the till - except when we arrived, there was very little food left. The cabinet looked tired and unorganised. My Mum pointed out that as the food dwindles throughout the day, they should still make sure the rest of it looks good. I totally agreed. Nothing looked highly appealing, except for a few sweet cakes. We ordered a an extra hot, trim flat white ($4), an extra hot, trim hot chocolate ($4.50) and a Sticky Date Pudding Cake served warm with cream ($5.50). We also bought two chocolate chip cookies ($3.50 each), to take away. Both drinks were perfect - extra hot and strong! I do find at most cafes that there will be a 50/50 chance whether they will make it extra hot or not. Usually I just take it back if it is not hot enough. If you do come to The Fridge, I recommend ordering a hot chocolate as it is sweet and comes with marshmallows and a chocolate fish! One of the few places in Auckland that gives you both! However, the highlight of our afternoon tea was definitely the Sticky Date Pudding Cake! It was delicious! It was warm the whole way through, very moist and had a good serving of dates inside the cake. It was just like eating the real dessert! As for the décor, well it was a bit too casual and alternative for my liking. The Fridge has many different seating areas with odd chairs. Personally, I think it is a bit of a waste of space. Overall, The Fridge had great coffee and sweet treats. Just a shame about the décor and funny seating... May go back to try one of their pies - I have heard they are pretty good!
