That might explain the 25-pounds I gained while living in Italy but that's a whole other story... The cappuccinos are out of this world. Strong and smooth all at the same time, creamy with the perfect amount of foam. Exactly what you need to wake up in the morning. Their pastries, all made in house, are equally delightful. I usually just grabbed a single brioche to accompany my coffee but occasionally sprung for a dozen to take into work. I bought my mom a birthday cake at Roxy Bar once, too. It was all SO good! Staff are incredibly warm and friendly. They were always happy to see me and put up with my awful Italian for 4 solid years. If you find yourself anywhere close to Ponsacco (about an hour from Florence, 30 minutes from Pisa), be sure to make a visit to Roxy Bar! I promise it will be a highlight of your trip. I'm going back to Italy for a visit in August and Roxy Bar will be my first stop!

It is located in the heart of Piazza della Cisterna, the award-winning gelateria is known for its rich, ultra-creamy textures, high-quality local ingredients, and inventive flavors created by master gelato maker Sergio Dondoli. While classics like pistachio and chocolate are exceptional, the shop is especially famous for creative combinations such as saffron and pine nut cream or pink grapefruit with sparkling wine. We tried Rosemary Baby (Raspberry and Tuscan rosemary) and safron and pine nut cream gelato. Nothing like we ever tasted...The atmosphere is lively and energetic, with long lines that reflect its international reputation. We waited in line about 30 minutes but was well worth it. Despite the long line and higher prices, Gelateria Dondoli remains a must-visit destination. Enjoying a cone beneath the medieval towers of San Gimignano turned the experience into more than dessert...it becomes part of the town's charm, and unique character.

When we visited, there was a line about 15 people deep out the door, but it moved reasonably quickly. They offer a wide range of unique flavors -- things like rosemary, lavender, and other creative combinations you don't usually see. It makes for a fun experience trying something different. All the flavors we tried were good, and overall the gelato was excellent. We've had some incredible gelato elsewhere in Italy, but this was still very enjoyable. Worth stopping in if you're in San Gimignano. Grab some and enjoy by the well in the center of the piazza.

Located in Soffiano, it is a totally doable bus ride on the 6, in about 20 minutes you're there. Why is it amazing? They have perfected the art of traditional Tuscan sweets, no bullshit, just sugar, and love, and whatever other drug they put in their 'mille-foglie' cakes. I highly recommend the schiacciata, cenci, sacher cake and their tasty panini, I had one with prosciutto and artichoke which was awesome. Take some to go and your life will never be the same. During carnivale season, you will see the line snake out the door as people pick up their treats, I was there for over two hours and there was a almost constant stream of people, I don't know how they could even make that many cakes! To my waistline's horror, they also serve an abundance aperitivo and weekend dish dinner. This is a quite famous bar in Florence but not so much to tourists because it is out of the historical center and in a residential area. I love this place because not only do they have amazing pastries, but the staff are the real deal, they don't fool around. Coffee is made to perfection every time. I like taking my coffee outside and enjoying the neighborhood characters who pass by, enjoying a few more rounds of coffee while I sit back and relax. I see a lot of locals meeting here, unfortunately it isn't my zona so I am not a regular, but it's definitely a spot that is worth the trek to. To me this pasticceria is the real deal!
