Love this place! I think it's a chain since I visited one in Chapel Hill. This location has a better selection and prices. While I was in, they played great music and the staff was really nice. Lots of variety and the condition of clothes was very good as well. I only wish the store was larger since they did a nice job of curating the collection. Prices on graphic tees were around $6-8 and women's tops and skirts run $6-10. Lots of cute accessories by the register. I wear a size 14 and had no problem finding options. read more

This one is tough, I used to enjoy rumors more than I do now. I have shopped for clothes several times and as time goes by, I seem to be able to find less and less stuff. The apparel seems to be getting more and more hip and scene. It's getting harder and harder to find clothes that are my "style". I wish there was a larger variety of styles of clothes. I wouldn't really call this a "vintage" shop, more like a hipster thrift store. There are some cute things in here but everything pretty much dates from the late 80's early 90's. The location of the place is ideal for many college students nearby, but it doesn't really fit with my style. Still, if you want some vintage pieces, you should check it out. The prices aren't ridiculous from what I could tell compared to some of the prices I've seen at Plato's, etc. Kinda wished they organized the dresses by size rather than the randomness going on, but I am OCD. Truly my favorite place to shop. For years I've struggled with finding fashionable clothes on a budget and have had to spend time scouring the internet. Well no more! Since moving a few blocks away from this gem I've found something I adore every time I go through the front door. Whether it's a pale lavender lipstick, red velvet Vans, a favorite record, dress, choker, ring, you name it! I've even seen items I've paid double for elsewhere. Some people get nervous when they hear "used clothing" but Rumors has new and old items, and even the used items look new. You'll never know the difference. Staff is friendly and helpful, I recall asking about a record I had seen on their Facebook that was no longer there and the guy I talked to was very helpful. Sizes seem to be hit or miss, but when isn't it. No matter where you go there's always that one thing that's too big or small. All in all it's a wonderful shop where you can find some amazing things. This is my first review I've ever left. So it's pretty clear this place left an impact on me, and not a good one. I heard really good things about this place, and I'm a huge thrifter so I was super excited to check it out. Once I was done and ready to check out, I can't honestly say I've never been treated so disrespectfully. I put my things on the counter and tried talking to the guy ringing me up and he ignored me, told me my total, ran my card then picked up his phone and turned around and proceeded texting. I work in an upper scale, second hand store as well and I've never in my life thought it was okay to treat a customer as such. While he had his back to me, I guess it was alright to just take my bag, receipt, and leave? So for one last attempt I said "thanks! Have a good one!" I wasn't even acknowledged. Rumors is incredible and here's why. They bring the convenience of online shopping to the world of thrifting/vintage clothes shopping with seemless ease. By following their Instagram account, one can view their latest and greatest of used clothing like a live feed without ever leaving your phone's screen. Not only do they have a great selection of products both new, on current trend, and vintage, but they're sold at a fair price. Which is rare when it comes to vintage clothing stores, prices are usually incredibly high, especially rare, novelty items, not the case here. First off I live by reviews and reading the reviews here had me mainly interested in the customer service aspect. I will say the girl who greeted me as I came in couldn't sound more uninterested if she tried lol. But you know I dont care about being greeted, I'm there to shop. Being at a hip store that kind of pretentious vibe is bound to be there. It's like the same vibe of going in to a Urban Outfitters lol. The girl who checked me out was friendly. I guess it just depends on who you deal with. But I personally like being left alone when I shop so I actually appreciated not having someone breathing down my back or trying to talk to me. Comparing Rumors to a very similar store in LA called Popkiller the prices aren't bad at all. I paid $36 for a button up at Popkiller but the ones at Rumors were up to $20 less. So people complaining about prices dont understand how a boutique style store works. If you want a expertly curated wardrobe you have to pay a bit. I found a pair of rad overalls for $16, not bad at all. Got some other cool clothes for reasonable prices. Like a funky polka dot sweater for $12...again not bad at all. Only thing I didn't like was some of the tees were a bit too high priced, but I dont know their value to determine that. Overall enjoyed my experience and will be back. read more

As an experienced collector of vintage items and clothing, I can honestly say this is one of the worst places to shop in Richmond. I've shopped here numerous times and been treated disrespectfully very consistently. I've never left a review of any kind on yelp and I downloaded the app literally just to warn people not to waste their money here. Ridiculous prices, bad customer service, and they don't give you nearly enough for the items you bring in. Truly a waste of space in this great city. read more

Rumors is a great local shop to find vintage clothing. It's always packed with new stuff because, according to the Facebook page, they're ALWAYS looking for sick threads all over the country to bring to our awesome city. The owners are super nice and the clothes are all pretty cheap (shoes for ~$12, tops for ~$8, etc.) They are a little lacking in the jewelry, but they make up for it in how awesome everything else is in the store. They rip you off when they buy your clothing. They'll price it lower than they sell so the percentage they give you for it is way lower than it should be. I sold a bunch of stuff to them before without noticing but then they made the mistake of posting one of my items on instagram right after I sold it to them. The rude bald British guy took two shirts of mine and priced them at $4 a piece, then later I see my shirt on instagram on sale for $10. So he gives me $2.75 for both shirts when if they're supposed to give you 35 percent I should've gotten at LEAST $3 for the one shirt. Never shopping or selling at that snobby shithole again. read more

Very rude staff. I've been here before to sell clothing and the experience was fine, but this time the staff was awful! I felt judged and very unwelcome. After looking through my clothes for maybe 2 minutes they shoved everything back in the bag really carelessly, no attempt to fold whatsoever. The exchange happened so quickly it felt as if they were trying to shove me out of the store and I was worried that they pushed me out so quickly because maybe they were trying to steal items from me without me noticing. Every time I have been in to rumors boutique I have never had luck with finding things that fit appropriately or are the right price for me. Not rumors fault, but kind of frustrating to take the time to come downtown, find a place to park and shop with 20 other people in the store around you to find nothing. Also if they force you to leave your purse outside of the fitting room, the least they could do is have someone around to watch it. I was told I had to leave my purse out of the dressing room and when I walked out not a single person was nearby to make sure it wasn't stolen or messed with. Seems a little reckless and irresponsible to prevent stealing items from the store. I have also been in before when I have been maybe one of three customers in the store and the employees are gossiping about other employees, or whoever is in charge is mouthing off to one of the girls. Does not seem like a very fun environment to work in, and I feel sorry for the girls that put up with being talked down to. Will not be returning. read more

I almost never write reviews, but Rumors went above and beyond my expectations when I wanted to purchase a couple things through their Instagram. I live in Seattle, so I thought it would have taken a couple of days to even get the transaction going! But they were quick to respond & super helpful and friendly. I wanted to get a fair trade Mexican Blanket from them but didn't know what color to pick. They sent pictures instantly and put up with my indecisiveness. I wanted purple, but at the last minute switched to orange and they were very accommodating!! After I sent my payment, my shipping information with tracking number was confirmed in less than 10 minutes!!! Overall, I was very impressed by their quick and personable customer service, even if I am all the way across the county from them. My only regret is that I forgot to get the name of the person on the other side of the email so I could thank them here as well. read more

By far my favorite place to shop in Richmond. Friendly staff, an awesome mix of clothes for guys and girls. I can always find something that I've never seen before in Rumors. They support local artist, designers, and community organizations too. You can't beat the price point either. Imagine getting pieces from Urban outfitters, H&M, Forever 21, Levis, and so many other brands for under $20. I highly recommend stopping in, if you have the chance! read more

Rumors is probably my favorite store in the entire universe. They have a wonderful and diverse selection of men and women's clothing for cheap, which is important for broke college students, and everything is in great condition. They also support local artists, help to promote events happening in RVA, and all the employees are incredibly friendly. Plus, they play good music, which is always a bonus. read more

The pros: Some very unique items, extremely decent (but not thrift store level) prices for cool vintage items, they will buy your clothing. The cons: Merchandise can be hit or miss...there are some really cool things to be found here (particularly if you drop in often as the college set is always hitting it up), and some stuff that nobody, no matter how experimental with fashion, would ever wear. If you're used to finding great vintage deals at thrift stores for dirt cheap prices, it is an adjustment to have to go double digits, but compared to what you would pay for these same items from on line vintage seller like Etsy or Ebay, the deals are pretty damn good. Plus, as another reviewer noted, they are doing all the legwork by preselecting the clothes for you. They tend to have very specific ideas about what's fashionable and sometimes this can make the selection pretty narrow if it's not your taste (For example, shopping here has completely burned me out on certain trends like Southwestern-influenced prints and clothing....enough already). And you have to really inspect stuff before you buy it.....MOST of the time, they really do a very good job with only selling stuff that is in good vintage condition and totally wearable, but every once in a while something with a huge stain or rip, or just something really hideous, will sneak it's way in. Another complaint is that the inventory can feel small-ish. It never takes me long to case the enttire store and oftent, I walk out empty handed or with one thing. However, I don't mind putting that kind of time in if two out of four times, I find something really unique. As far as thier buying policy, its not for the thin-skinned. I've had moderate luck with selling to them-- they will take the time to seriously consider your items and buy what they like, but it's pretty hard to get a handle on what they'll take- they often reject things I previously bought from them a month ago, etc. I've watched some people cower away in shame when huge bags of thier clothes were rejected, but they know what they want I guess. The jewlery selection is the most dispointing element....often there's just not very much very investing in and tends to overpriced. read more

If I could give it 0 I would. Having read the reviews, I did my best to get here early. My mistake was not calling ahead. I make lots of mistakes who doesn't, so I don't usually leave bad reviews for anyone I try to keep bad reviews to myself. I worked in retail too long to be that inconsiderate. Anyhow, I'm sitting outside, with the $5 wifi phone, my dogs, myself, and my car(something I am very blessed to have). What I don't have is patience for buy/sell/trade or Craig's list wanted ads that are misleading. So yeah, this place is getting a little backlash from all my negative experiences. This one was too much. After doing my best to bring quality items resell people in the vintage business would want, I drove over. I know no matter how much I might plead my case, others will still blame me. You should have ° been there eArlier° ° talked to the manger° °not have driven without knowing° possibly. However no one gave me that suggestion ahead of time. So for the next person an hour is too late. I don't want to encourage people who are broke to go anywhere near this place. No snake skin Gimbel bros high healed sandals or matte black B&L RayBan wayfarers are gonna help your cause. No waiting for them to have more cash is possible. Certainly do not try to tell the employee that you are sitting outside with no money two dogs and no place to go. She will say, well I guess you'll just have to wait until tomorrow. Tomorrow??? Do you not do business in cash? Is no cash coming into the stores at all? People who work in places such as this, or those who advertise they "buy anything" on Craigslist become irritated with the lack of decent offers they receive. They get a lot of people insulted by the amount offered for their precious stuff. I'm trying my best not to get too worked up, because no one listens when someone is upset. It's just a miniscule amount of business that these places would miss out on in the were a bit more detailed in exactly what they want and what they can offer. If I were going to write an ad for this store, saying a few of the lucky first 3 people can even get cash! Otherwise you'll leave feeling even worse about the extent of your brokenness. Like poor people aren't already looked down on enough as it is. So I'm sure the store has a nice selection and some amazing finds, but I would readjust the advertising. It's an exchange a clothing thrift and exchange store. With jaded snobby employees who forget what it's like to be on the other side of the counter. read more

The store smells awful, to be more accurate a mixture of body odor, mothballs, and incense, some of the clothing they have are in great condition and work well with a vintage inspired outfit and some of the clothes honestly should have been tossed in the trash or left in the back of grandmas closet. The customer service at the store is the worst I've ever experienced. When you walk in you get a lovely dry and extremely fake hello by at least one of the employees, unless they're talking about after work plans if that's the case then prepare to be ignored to the greatest extent, in particular the British guy is the worst out of all of them, really needs to work on his approach with the customers, I don't know what his problem is but he needs to fix it, he's rude, overly abrasive, and just gives off the worst impression when you talk to him, he alone ruined my experience there I will never buy or sell anything at that store ever again because they're just not worth my time or money. read more

Just left this store with a bad taste in my mouth! I've been in many times before for both buying and selling. There used to be a blonde curly haired girl who was always so sweet and friendly when I would come in to sell. I just came in with a full basket and the first thing some employee I've never seen before says is " are you ok with store credit or are you coming back another day for cash" I didn't understand what she ment by that as I have done this many times, and she also gave no explanation. I asked what she said again, once again she just repeated herself loudly. Finally I was able to get somewhat of an unfriendly explanation. "You HAVE to be at the store an hour before we open because there's usually a line of 20 people" Guess that means they were out of cash for the day, which is all she had to say. Instead she made me feel stupid. I've never run into this issue anyway, it's been a while but I used to come in during the middle of the day and getting cash was never an issue. I understand they may be busier now but they need to get a more friendly staff like they used to have. I wanted to stay and look around but honestly I decided I would rather not seeing as I was embarassed by the employee. read more
