Friendly service, beautiful quilts. Sewing kits for those on a cruise looking for an activity.

So you want to bring home something other than a blood diamond when you go to Alaska. I understand;…read moreI'm in that boat. My hobbies compel me to sniff out fabric and yarn stores because the promise of a creation is always taunting me. Can I make something cool with a bit of this and a dash of that? Of course! Enter Changing Threads/Uncommon Threads/Rushin' Tailor (three businesses, one name). Like any good quilt store, the cottons are piled high with bolt upon bolt promising a thrill and a chill for anyone with a wish and a dream. My waxing poetic aside, the choice and sales were good--for Alaska. I picked up some Raven Frog Fiber Arts (based in Sitka, AK) roving to spin. The store was busy, but each employee had their job down to a science. Can't do better than that. Accessibility notes: Shop can get crowded. Narrow aisles for customers with mobility devices. No braille signage.

This shop was formerly located in a shared space with Rushin' Tailor (quilt shop) but now occupies…read morea little space of its own on 7th Ave, across from Walsh Park. There's a very nice selection of locally dyed yarn, all of it pretty reasonably priced for luxury goods in a tourist town. I was on a mission for qiviut during my Alaska vacation, but instead fell in love with a beautiful wool/silk/yak blend... had a lovely chat with the dyer, too. Nice to know I'm supporting a local artisan with my tourism dollars. There was also a fun selection of buttons & notions & the like. Drop in & browse for a bit before you have to get back on the boat!

Purchased a knife here and I've been using it everyday since. I fell in love with the handle…read more Rod explained that he purchased the blades and only makes the handle from special wood and that knife was the last of both the blades which were purchased by him in Japan and the artisan who makes the blades no longer makes them. Also he could no longer get any of the wood to make the handle. I would have ordered a matching fork and dinner knives if I could. They did have some unique items in that store as opposed to what you would find in the other cruise ports and they did seem to be of higher quantity than the other store, but I could not say for sure that they were made by Alaskan artisans. We got a few free pieces of fudge for purchasing a knife. My husband said it was good, but nothing to write home about. Maybe we got that wrong flavor? We are from San Francisco, so there plenty of really good desserts to be had here I would like to address discrimination charges left by the other reviewers. We are Chinese (and look it) and did not feel that we were discriminated against during our time at the store. Please note that there were other flags other than the confederate one in the store. Both Rod and his wife and the ladies who rang us up and provided the fudge were perfectly nice to us. Also, I did not notice any discrimination against other people of color while in the store. There were plenty of people of color on our cruise ship who went into this store. If there was any incident of discrimination during my visit, I would have left without making a purchase.

Alaska Rod's - Disgustingly unpatriotic display of confederate flags at the same level as the flag of this great nation and state. Shameful and racist.
