Picaya is like a high quality Earth Bounds Trading Company (are those still around?). Like a more eclectic, expensive, and small Pier 1 or World Market. Their tagline is "Many cultures... one source" - simple and fitting. It's super cozy in here, like a really awesome, worldly, and wealthy person's living room. Beautiful furniture, pillows, lamps, mirrors, hand woven baskets, bowls, wooden boxes, glass pipes, fancy candles and soaps, crystals, rugs, handmade toys and trinkets. Everything is so earthy and fragrant with vibrant colors and unique details. You could probably spend hours admiring all of these handmade goodies from around the world. Incense, spiritual decor, jewelry, wind-chimes, gorgeous wall art, kitchen tools... I didn't end up buying anything because we were only passing through and I'd already spent enough $$$, but it was definitely my kinda boutique. I wish I could fill my entire house with treasures from Picaya.

Imagine a store filled with handmade carved wooden boxes of varying sizes and uses (I own at least two just for their aesthetics), multiple incense scents to choose from, mirrors, statues of dragons and buddhas, energy crystals, hand woven rugs and old school (yet still unique) children's toys designed to amaze and delight. The place is just excellent for finding something totally unique to take home to that unlucky soul who couldn't come to Telluride for the skiing. There are plenty of things that are easily packable (and many that are easily breakable too - ask about assistance shipping fragile or larger items home, they can accommodate), and as I said, since almost all is hand made, it's all unique. Every time I go, I have to pick up something new to remember the trip by. Great find. Even if you don't want to drop any coin, it's definitely worth wandering into and poking around - you never know what treasure they'll have.

Kids were able to get on and explore a few of them (the others are just in restoration stage at the moment, that's all). The new owner Pat is not only super friendly but he and his staff are very well versed in helping with all things reading and books. I found a collectible Jane Austen book that is almost too pretty to read. Ouray Books has moved from the Beaumont to 6th Street under Mouse's Chocolate shop. It is THE perfect location as it is a cozy hidden gem and Pat has done an amazing job making it welcoming and cozy.. Make sure and stop by to get books to read for your vacation, some to take home or collectibles to enjoy. One thing that I loved is that you can contact Pat or his staff with any book you are looking for and they cab order it for you! Much more personalized service for all your reading needs. There were not only rare book finds but also many unique gifts. A bonus is to walk around the shop and read the poems on the wall. Pat the owner of the book shop is the Poet behind them! First of all, we walked in and saw the most beautiful bookstore we have ever been in. It has all been recently redone and looks fabulous. There is a wide selection of books, from bestsellers to local authors to children's books to cookbooks to guide books. There is also a variety of cute little gifts, greeting cards, and stickers. So far so good, it was a beautiful store with a great selection of books and other goods. What took it over the top was that the owner offers coffee to drink while you browse the books and FRESH BAKED COOKIES his wife had brought in (they were delicious). The owner was extremely friendly and helpful if we had any questions about the books or Ouray in general. We had a great experience and would definitely recommend a visit to tourist and local alike!

One shirt in particular caught my eye: a moose riding a bicycle. From that moment, I knew exactly where I was headed after my train ride to Silverton and lunch. True to my plan, I made a beeline for Timberline Trading to pick up the moose-on-a-bike T-shirt and a Million Dollar Highway magnet before driving to Ouray the next day. Mission accomplished. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the store was well organized, making it easy to browse despite the steady flow of tourists. Prices were what you'd expect in a popular tourist destination, but they were reasonable and competitive compared to other shops in town. If you're looking for souvenirs that are a little more memorable than the standard keychain or refrigerator magnet, this is a great stop. Their custom-designed merchandise gives you something unique to take home and a story to tell. After all, not everyone can say their favorite vacation souvenir features a moose casually riding a bicycle.
