I joined for a summer trip back in 2000 and we have since made this place our family tradition too! Not just in June, but August and September also! We love the cute, clean and cozy cabins! Great price and everyone is so welcoming! Thanks for making the stay so wonderful always! Highly recommend a stay with Nelson's!!

Some cabins have a view of the lake and some do not, but the land itself does have a view if you just walk out of your cabin a ways, toward the back of the mowed property. No A/C but you don't need it in Grand Marais; just open windows. There are heaters built into the rooms and cabins; if the pilot light is out, just go to the door of the office and ask, and they will fix it for you. They now have wi-fi in the rooms; the info for that is on a little business card you can ask for when you check in. We've stayed here twice now; first in a tiny "studio" cabin with a kitchen (number 5) and once in a simple "hotel room" sort of room (number 10). It's not the Hilton. There will be no chocolates on your pillow, you know? But the rooms are clean and tidy, and the price simply cannot be beat: http://www.travelersrest.com/cabins.htm They do have a sandbox and a swingset/slide/play area for kids. Actually, it's a pretty good location for kids-- lots of room to run and blow off steam. Most cabins are seasonally open, closed in winter, but they do have one that is open year-round.

It was my first time on the north shore and I was especially looking forward to that! What we got was a view of the parking lot :( Then, I hurt my knee while out on a hike on the first day. We were booked for 4 nights so decided to push through. The knee wasn't doing so well by day 3, so I asked if we left a day early if we could get refunded for that last night. We were told they were booked and it's their policy. I get the policy but don't lie...the place went from around a dozen cars to 3. We wanted to leave on a Sunday instead of a Monday. We will be making more trips up that way but will find alternative lodging.

We were running late, and Bob stayed around at the window for us about an hour later than we had anticipated checking in. We were welcomed and given the grand tour of the B&B: several rooms on the top floor, including our queen bedroom with shower; the main floor, which has loads of books, a cozy gas fireplace, lots of comfy chairs and tea and coffee on demand as well as a dining room table; and the basement which has a sauna (with shower and toilet) and ski room with an area to get ready to ski and a waxing stand. The digs are clean and homey, and the entire house is scattered with art from Marlys (a truly talented woman) and other notable area artists including Jim Brandenburg. I felt like I was staying at a nice, warm cabin of a friend. If this is a ski destination trip for you (as it was for us) the Pincushion Mountain trail system is literally right out the door. And the skiing was amazing! We had about 1.5-2 feet of pack compared to the Twin Cities' nothing during the first full weekend in January. The sauna was a real treat after skiing in sub-zero temps. All I can say is, we'll definitely be back!

Fortunately, we received a call from the owners (Carl and Danni) asking if we'd like to take a weekend that was rescheduled by the original people that booked. He remembered us calling a few times hoping for a reservation! How kind! We visited the small, studio cabin over a weekend and it was above and beyond amazing. We have been fully isolated (awaiting another birth coming soon) and Carl took time to explain how everything was cleaned during Covid and continued throughout the weekend to respond immediately to digital messages rather than breaking distance and seeing us in person. We really appreciated that. We have stayed in COUNTLESS places on the North Shore and frequent that area often and my husband said he thinks this was his most favorite! It was lovely and homey. We enjoyed the fully stoked and ready fireplace (all wood is included and accessible) and also packed all our own food which was stored and reheated nicely thanks to all the amenities. Wonderful location and a quick drive to Grand Marais. We were also super close to our fave coffee shop Fika and many hiking areasso that was a plus!!
