We were running late, and Bob stayed around at the window for us about an hour later than we had anticipated checking in. We were welcomed and given the grand tour of the B&B: several rooms on the top floor, including our queen bedroom with shower; the main floor, which has loads of books, a cozy gas fireplace, lots of comfy chairs and tea and coffee on demand as well as a dining room table; and the basement which has a sauna (with shower and toilet) and ski room with an area to get ready to ski and a waxing stand. The digs are clean and homey, and the entire house is scattered with art from Marlys (a truly talented woman) and other notable area artists including Jim Brandenburg. I felt like I was staying at a nice, warm cabin of a friend. If this is a ski destination trip for you (as it was for us) the Pincushion Mountain trail system is literally right out the door. And the skiing was amazing! We had about 1.5-2 feet of pack compared to the Twin Cities' nothing during the first full weekend in January. The sauna was a real treat after skiing in sub-zero temps. All I can say is, we'll definitely be back!

We stayed in the birch room. The bathrooms (except for the pine room- we were the only ones there, so she showed us around) are small but it's not like I'm spending quality time in there. A former pediatric nurse, lynn runs this charming bnb with her retired friend ruby. yummy breakfasts (accommodated our veggie needs), views of the lakes, a great sauna in the basement, and birds all around. Hiking and x-country trails cross along the road to her property. We were here in the early fall, watching the leaves start to turn. Lynn bought this place this summer in 2010 and fixed it up quite nicely. Would love to return in the winter. http://www.pincushionbb.com/index.php

The sink and mirror was in the bedroom area. There was a small deck off our 2nd floor room. The location was wonderful, right on the baptism river. At night, it was so quiet there that it was so peaceful to sleep with the patio door open. Where this place really shined was the breakfast and Lura the host. The food was absolutely wonderful. Our first day there we had a very tasty smoked salmon scrambled eggs with a cinnamon scone. The second day was a baked custard of sorts with blueberry capote, grapefruit and sausage links. Of course there was plenty of juice and coffee. My guy and I just loved the chocolate chip cookies that were always there for the taking, the endless supply of coffee and the warm and inviting atmosphere of the place. There were several nice couples there at the same time and we all dined together in the common area. It was nice to share our day plans and talk about what we saw and did while we were there. We spent 2 days hiking several parks on the north shore. We can't wait to return and perhaps try out a different room. The only thing I can think to improve upon is that the water pressure in our bathroom needed some help. We loved the 2 person tub but it took FOREVER to fill and showers were pretty low pressure as well. The bed was comfy and the little frig in our room was a nice added feature.

Rooms were comfortable and stocked with all the ameneties you would need along with a small fridge and microwave. The hotel itself had an excellent free breakfast in a really pretty dining area. Extra points in that they included lefse on the menu, which is a must try if you're that far up north. in the lobby they also had a small bar area. We didn't take advantage of that offering but nice to know that it was an option. One of the things that drew us to the spot was there indoor hot tub as well. The hot tub is enormous, and in some photos I saw and had a waterfall like feature. Unfortunately the times we went down it wasn't on and we couldn't figure out how to turn it on, but that didn't stop us from enjoying our time In the hot tub. While we were there, one of our fellow travelers was doing a little sauna experience, running out into the lake, jumping in the cold water and then coming back and jumping into the hot tub. It's a bit of a walk through the hotel and down to the beach but fun to try if you're up for it! Location is perfect as there are lots of shops, viewpoints, restaurants, etc that are all easily walkable. This is definitely our hotel of choice when returning to Grand Marais!

Staff was so kind and friendly, facility as a whole was warm, welcoming, clean, and supportive of a much needed vacation. The double queen bed room booked was beautiful and just enough for when you're done walking for the day and want to relax near Lake Superior. We had a third level room and a balcony to sit outside, absolutely breathtaking. I really like that the shower and toilet are in an enclosed space with a large vanity/sink outside so people can shower in quick rounds and not hog the entire bathroom. This hotel has some pet-friendly rooms ($25/one dog, $40/2 dogs) on the second(main) level, which is great if you want your pups to join you. Overall lovely experience, and I will be back!
