Autumn has hit the streets of our towns and being a fan of the season it's time to take a drive to…read morethe beautiful surrounds of Lake Breeze Winery at Langhorne Creek. Seems the Langhorne Creek Wine region is a secret to most South Australians, yet a 20 minute drive from Strathalbyn and your there. Being one of several wineries in the region it's a day out without the crowds of McLaren Vale or the Barossa. Lake Breeze is a family affair run and operated by the Follett Family where the greeting is heartfelt and the smiles are genuine. Here you can taste the range of wines they produce in the Cellar Door or sit down in a gorgeous setting, overlooking the vines, and enjoy a light meal. Weddings and functions are also catered for. The menu consist of: Trio of Dips $12.00. Cheese Platter $24.00. Lake Breeze Platter, (local meats and cheeses) $30.00. Soup of The Day with warm, crusty roll $12.00. Pumpkin, Ricotta & Walnut Cannelloni $15.00. Beef Pie & Salad $16.00. Chicken Pie & Salad $16.00. Lemon Curd Cupcake & Coffee $8.00. Now I must vouch for the cupcakes as I am a fan. Being a connoisseur of cake the Lemon Curd Cupcakes are divine and made by the loving hand of Janine from the Winery. None fresher, the cup-cakes I am referring to! The food is (mostly) sourced from the local area which in turn helps the small businesses who operate in the district. More recently accolades flowed in the Langhorne Creek Region Wine Show winning Lake Breeze in last 5 years: Champion Wine 4 times and amassing 17 trophies from the Show. For example: Champion Wine of the Show - 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Best Cabernet Sauvignon - 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Best Shiraz - 2010 Winemaker's Selection Best Sparkling, White or Rosé - 2012 Chardonnay Best Museum or Fortified Wine - 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon & Producer of the Year. Now to be honest I am not a big wine drinker, it's my liver not I who chose that decision however I believe a trip to Langhorne Creek to sample a wine that suits your palette is well worth it. Even if you, like myself, don't partake to sit upon the deck, and sample some local produce, on a sunny Autumn day is well worth the petrol money.

Housed in an historic stable is a warm and welcoming cellar door, with their sense of humour on display at the entrance! The cellar door has knowledgeable and friendly staff who share the history of vintages in the region and the differences in wine making techniques used by chief winemaker Rebecca Wilson. The Batonnage Chardonnay ($32) is buttery and toasty, but without that overwhelming 80's style oak. Plus it boasts a lingering tongue coating texture. The Tempranillo/Graciano ($24) is amazingly fragrant with roses and light bodied enough to enjoy on it's own on a hot summer afternoon. Platters and pizzas, both laden with local produce, are available in the rustic-chic dining space at floor level. Take away picnic packs are also offered. There is a strong artistic theme, with historical photos of the cellar door's restoration, an exhibit of artworks painted on barrel ends in the dining area, and a mezzanine level with another exhibit. A wide array of local produce is also available to taste, try and take home, so there is plenty to keep you occupied while waiting for your picnic pack to be prepared. The picnic pack is handed over with a smile and an explanation that it takes a little while to prepare as they heat the local bread rolls that are tucked into the beautifully presented box. Waiting to see inside the box is the hardest part as we travel to nearby Lake Alexandrina for our gourmet Bremerton picnic. This has to be the best packaged picnic hamper I've ever collected. There is a perfect variety of dips, bread, dukkah, olives, sun dried tomatoes, goat curd, cloth bound cheddar, brescaola, prosciutto and crackers. All are branded and arranged artfully in a box that comes with plates, biodegradable cutlery, and napkins. Bremerton has a wonderful, welcoming feel and really interesting wines. It is well worth a visit while in Langhorne Creek.

The winery has won some prodigious awards, Cellar Door with Best Foods, Australia's Best Cellar Door, Cellar Door with Best Food Langhorne Creek. We were seated in an undercover purpose built alfresco, this is a very large area with great views over the vinyard and Plains. We enjoyed from a very good menu, two large homebaked steak pies, with salad and fries. Our choice of wines from the wine list was a sparkling chardonnary, mixed Sauvignon Blanc, and a very soft pleasant tasting smooth 2009 Emily Cross Shiraz. We found the service excellent and informative. Totally a very relaxing Australia Day experience. Accomodation is available on request. Highly recommended.

Angas Plains Estate is a scenic fifty minute drive South East from Adelaide (via the Mt Barker turnoff to Strathalbyn, then just off the main Langhorne Creek Road). Langhorne Creek is the second largest grape growing district in South Australia which, although long established (commencing in 1852), has grown rapidly over the past twenty years. It is well recognised for the production of exceptional, full bodied red wines with soft tannins, and crisp fresh white wines.
