Seems the Langhorne Creek Wine region is a secret to most South Australians, yet a 20 minute drive from Strathalbyn and your there. Being one of several wineries in the region it's a day out without the crowds of McLaren Vale or the Barossa. Lake Breeze is a family affair run and operated by the Follett Family where the greeting is heartfelt and the smiles are genuine. Here you can taste the range of wines they produce in the Cellar Door or sit down in a gorgeous setting, overlooking the vines, and enjoy a light meal. Weddings and functions are also catered for. The menu consist of: Trio of Dips $12.00. Cheese Platter $24.00. Lake Breeze Platter, (local meats and cheeses) $30.00. Soup of The Day with warm, crusty roll $12.00. Pumpkin, Ricotta & Walnut Cannelloni $15.00. Beef Pie & Salad $16.00. Chicken Pie & Salad $16.00. Lemon Curd Cupcake & Coffee $8.00. Now I must vouch for the cupcakes as I am a fan. Being a connoisseur of cake the Lemon Curd Cupcakes are divine and made by the loving hand of Janine from the Winery. None fresher, the cup-cakes I am referring to! The food is (mostly) sourced from the local area which in turn helps the small businesses who operate in the district. More recently accolades flowed in the Langhorne Creek Region Wine Show winning Lake Breeze in last 5 years: Champion Wine 4 times and amassing 17 trophies from the Show. For example: Champion Wine of the Show - 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Best Cabernet Sauvignon - 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Best Shiraz - 2010 Winemaker's Selection Best Sparkling, White or Rosé - 2012 Chardonnay Best Museum or Fortified Wine - 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon & Producer of the Year. Now to be honest I am not a big wine drinker, it's my liver not I who chose that decision however I believe a trip to Langhorne Creek to sample a wine that suits your palette is well worth it. Even if you, like myself, don't partake to sit upon the deck, and sample some local produce, on a sunny Autumn day is well worth the petrol money.

Housed in an historic stable is a warm and welcoming cellar door, with their sense of humour on display at the entrance! The cellar door has knowledgeable and friendly staff who share the history of vintages in the region and the differences in wine making techniques used by chief winemaker Rebecca Wilson. The Batonnage Chardonnay ($32) is buttery and toasty, but without that overwhelming 80's style oak. Plus it boasts a lingering tongue coating texture. The Tempranillo/Graciano ($24) is amazingly fragrant with roses and light bodied enough to enjoy on it's own on a hot summer afternoon. Platters and pizzas, both laden with local produce, are available in the rustic-chic dining space at floor level. Take away picnic packs are also offered. There is a strong artistic theme, with historical photos of the cellar door's restoration, an exhibit of artworks painted on barrel ends in the dining area, and a mezzanine level with another exhibit. A wide array of local produce is also available to taste, try and take home, so there is plenty to keep you occupied while waiting for your picnic pack to be prepared. The picnic pack is handed over with a smile and an explanation that it takes a little while to prepare as they heat the local bread rolls that are tucked into the beautifully presented box. Waiting to see inside the box is the hardest part as we travel to nearby Lake Alexandrina for our gourmet Bremerton picnic. This has to be the best packaged picnic hamper I've ever collected. There is a perfect variety of dips, bread, dukkah, olives, sun dried tomatoes, goat curd, cloth bound cheddar, brescaola, prosciutto and crackers. All are branded and arranged artfully in a box that comes with plates, biodegradable cutlery, and napkins. Bremerton has a wonderful, welcoming feel and really interesting wines. It is well worth a visit while in Langhorne Creek.

You pay $15 entry fee just to see the inside of the building, resembling a twisted rubik's cube (they currently have a Salvador Dali sculpture exhibit which you can pay an additional $10 to see), and there is a bottom floor of... strange, modern, occasionally-creepy art. Then you go up to the top floor for tastings, which allows you to try the whole menu. On the plus side, there is a nice variety of styles and varietals here, including more unique ones like sparkling chambourcin and naturally fermented sagrantino. On the other hand, none of the wines were really stand-outs to me, thus we didn't buy any (their high-end shiraz was good, but not worth the $100+ pricetag) Still, an interesting place to visit and experience, so I'm glad we gave it a try.

This event…read moreis becoming more and more popular, and a large number of cellar doors are opening both unticketed and ticketed events to the public to showcase just how good it is to sit around a fire with a tasty glass of red wine and enjoy some downtime in the hills. Nepenthe was pumping on this particular day. The shed was full of willing punters, who were incidentally also trying to stay warm out of the rain (this particular day was wet. As in, non-stop showers all afternoon wet) but the cellar door was also accessible for those of us who were a little more tame in their celebrations. The wines are really good. The sauvignon blanc, the shiraz and the cabernet all have their own charms, at a reasonable price too. They had TacoCat the food van in attendance to feed the starving (or just curious) masses, and DJ in tow to keep the party going into the night. The festival is a 2 day affair, and we visited on the Saturday, so they were open until 8pm. Some, if not most, of the wineries close around 5pm. On previous visits, we have really enjoyed the sunshine on the hill by the tree. The view is to die for. You can see clear out to Balhannah/Woodside and beyond. Once you settle in to your first glass of wine and take a deep whiff of the grass under your toes, you will want to stay a while.

So glad my husband and I stumbled upon this absolute gem!!! We originally came in looking for a tasting of a few reds. So awesome that we decided to join the jockey club to receive a case per year (yes....so good that we are having the case shipped across the world back to the USA!). The jockey club comes with tasting notes and recipes paired with each wine/vintage. Such a cool and fun way to experience the wine. After joining the club, we also each got a half glass of the shiraz (more like a full glass) and got to try a few other wines that we would be getting in our shipment. Loved the atmosphere of the cellar door and appreciate it is family run. The winemaker, his wife, and daughter were all in the cellar door talking to us as well as the locals grabbing a glass. I have been to Woodstock on several occasions and the most recent was for the wedding of two very good friends. I have spent a great deal of my professional life organising functions - weddings being the most high pressure of these events (even the meekest girl has the ability to turn into a raging bridezilla) and I was absolutely floored with the organisation, affability and professionalism of Zak the restaurant manager and the woodstock crew. We had an alternate drop menu, chosen by the bride and groom. Every dish was delicious and maintained a very good standard (not quite as good as their unique, rustic a la carte menu, but it's impossible to acheive the same level of finish en masse). The restaurant at woodstock is called Coterie and is in the unique semi circular building where the reception was held. The space features an open fire in the middle of the inner wall. On Friday evenings they do a pizza night, nom, nom, sundays they have live jazz and there are Llamas over the back fence! Great novelty factor. I would not hesitate to recommend woodstock as a must-do Mclaren Vale destination.
