Red Bird Mission was established in 1921 to create healthy sustainable communities in the mountains…read moreof Southeast Kentucky. Located in the Cumberland Mountains it provided the first medical assistance. The communities that were created were all Christian outreach to an area that needed assistance in order to survive. In 1922 the first medical facility was established. In 1928 the first hospital was created through the work of Red Bird Mission and church volunteers. In 1959 the first modern hospital was built and in 1960 it offered outpatient health care. Red Bird Mission is a non-profit and exists through generous donations. Of course monetary donations are a big part of the need but lightly used clothing is also in demand. In addition to supporting Red Bird Mission through money or used items, donation of your time as a volunteer in one of the many locations and aspects of the Mission are also welcome. Lastly the Mission looks for volunteers to be Ambassadors which spread by word the existence and work of Red Bird Mission. Since I first became aware of Red Bird Mission from my church in Berkeley, CA in the 1960's Red Bird continues to thrive and grow. I was aware of the Mission's work and the Red Bird Mission School. Once I moved to Kentucky I became aware of the collection of lightly used clothing and bedding since the Mount Mission truck made pickups from our Shelbyville, KY church on a regular basis. In researching Red Bird Mission I have found they now have a Community Store, a Dorm for the School, a Senior housing community, and a food program for those in need. I have been a supporter of Red Bird Mission in the past but now I have a new understanding of all that is done to help an area of KY and it's people that are known to be financially disadvantaged. I will continue to do my part but suggest that this charity gets recognition as a worthy one for any donation you can make.
