I drove a little bit out of my way to try out this camera shop when I wanted to get my film rolls processed. They were very kind and efficient, and helped me with the process and my questions. I ended up processing three rolls of film, at around $15 each, and they were able to email me a Google Drive link where I could download them. It was a relatively fast and easy process, and I'll definitely be going back there for any future film developing! read more

TGFRCS (Thank God For Rye Camera Shop) In a world of megapixels, screens, and phones listening to our every word to enhance targeted advertising, sometimes it's nice to take a step back into the analogue world and make some pictures the way daddy did (though daddy was admittedly a dismal photographer). The first time I stepped into Rye Camera Shop, I was warmly greeted by Robert, who as it turns out is the absolute MAN. Robert operates with an almost therapeutic calm, he fluidly drifts around the shop, speaks with the even tenor of an audiobook narrator, and so forth. I'd been struggling to figure out a workflow for developing 35mm film that didn't involve mailing things all over the place, and Rye Camera Shop was a crucial discovery in this analogue crusade. So, needless to say, my rookie debut at the shop went as smoothly as the dome of a freshly shaven bald man. It was the kind of small business experience you dream of, the kind of place you want to continue supporting with legal US tender. And so I went, returning weekly (as I continue to do) for all my film developing needs. You have several options for your yield, but most common is the negatives and a CD, the contents of which can be conveniently airdropped to you at an iMac on the counter. The other cast of characters steering the ship are golden across the board, including Robert's wife Anja, Cheyenne, and a revered man named Pedro who I've somehow never crossed paths with. The Porto family has been running this shop for a mind-bloggling 73 years and it continues to draw a steady stream of customers. I'm never alone in my weekly sojourns which is extremely satisfying to see. There is really no place like Rye Camera Shop, an institution that has outlived the radically evolved photographic landscape with superior adaptability and renowned customer service. I'm thrilled to have found it, am more than happy to make the trek from Yonkers, and will hopefully be coming back for the next 73 years (will require life extension surgery, but it's worth it). read more

I went in the other day to see if my canon power shot could get fixed from getting wet in the rain. Over the phone the man was extremely nice and respectful and was able to hold a good conversation. Once i got into the shop, I was reassured and was told his honest opinion about the condition of the camera. He explained everything to me very nicely and sent my camera out for repairs. Hoping for a fixed camera for a great price. So far would definitely recommend. read more

I came in with my digital camera which hasn't been working in ages. I presumed it was going to have to sent out to be fixed...and cost a lot of money. The owner of the shop took his time talking me though what could wrong. He tried out a few things. He was very honest and forthright. It could be my battery or or the insides needed major work. If that latter, it probably wasn't worth getting it repaired. That is probably would be the same price for a new one. In case it was only the battery, he gave me a used one (they was headed for recycling) for me to take to see if that did the trick. A day later and a 24 hour charge...my camera is right as rain!!! Robert was great and would totally trust him when my next camera needs TLC...even if it would cost something! read more

I was in need of a battery for my Leica 35mm camera. Of course they had it in stock and And the employee I dealt with she was very friendly. I decided to try out a roll of 400 speed Kodak professional TMAX Black-and-white film 36 exposure. Definitely want to use it for some special shots I want to get. They even carry the 120 Film that has better resolution than a 35 mm because of its wide negative They have regular 400 speed Kodak and Fujifilm as well for sale color film. A very friendly and helpful staff. I'm still a big fan of film. Even though digital has advanced pretty well it just still can't beat the special look of film! read more

The staff were so beyond helpful and generous, waited for me to bring my camera when they were about to leave to get the photos developed for the day. I used this local camera shop which are owned by family ? to be taken me and my family's ID photo for Visa. I can't decide its quality since I stil don't submit the photo to embassy. But 2 copies of ID Photo+CD-Rom data cost about $20+tax. Not bad...Staffs are all friendly. read more

My Canon 5D EOS camera and flash were yielding blown-out photos and I could not find the problem. I brought the equipment to Rye Camera Shop. I had never been there before. I asked for help and was willing to do anything for the repair, e.g. get a new flash, send the camera out for repair, etc. The owner of the store and his wife (a professional photographer) were very eager to help me even though this was my first visit to the store. They examined the camera, advised against sending the camera for repair unless necessary (2-month wait time) and they tested the camera. The store owner cleaned all of the contacts of the camera and the flash and reset all of the camera settings and tested the camera. In testing the camera, it worked perfectly. No charge...even when I really pressed him to accept some payment. The two of them spent at least 20 minutes with me and easily could have sold me a new flash, sent the camera off for expensive repair, or charged me for time. Where do you find store owners like that today?? I used the camera the following evening to take about 75 photos and the camera worked perfectly. I am a new customer for sure!! read more

Like the local bookstore, small camera shops seem to be a dying institution. Nothing will hasten their deaths faster than the horrendously poor customer service of a frustrated hipster (failed?) photographer with a snippy attitude. I went there seeking basic help with my camera settings and received the nastiest, most dismissive attitude from the second I walked through their doors. Pedro is the man when it comes to a dead camera that needed charged. I was pleased due to a former New Yorker has to count on a camera guy and in NYC that's sometimes easy and pleasant and sometimes not. No one really gets how annoyed a customer can be at the thought of throwing out a $250-$1000 camera until you are limited. Look I realize that sometimes if you have a bad day, it's easy to be snippy -- but I didn't encounter that. A very helpful attitude in terms of defining what could be wrong with a camera. Feed the meter if you need to and they take credit cards. read more

Absolutely terrible customer service experience. Dropped off my camera on July 26 for a repair estimate and was told they'd give it to their repair guy and someone would let me know in a week. When 10 days had passed with no news, I called them, and was told it still hadn't been looked at and needed another day or two -- but again, a week went by with no word. I called again on Aug. 10 and was told "oops, sorry, we should probably have called, but it can't be repaired" and they'd call in a day or two when it was back in the shop for pick up. When I *again* didn't hear, I called on Aug. 17 and they told me they still didn't have it but, AGAIN, it would only be another day or two -- but predictably, still no word. I called again on Aug. 24, and now they claimed the repair guy was away and I couldn't possibly get it until after Aug. 28. But did anyone call after Aug. 28? Nope. I finally called again on Aug. 30 and was told it *still* wasn't in, but it definitely would come in the next day and I would be called the MOMENT it arrived. After waiting all day for a call, I finally rang after 5 p.m. and was told, "oh yes, it must have come in earlier today... but we close in 10 minutes." I was finally able to get it this afternoon. So in the end, it took two weeks for them to even LOOK at it and more than THREE WEEKS to get an item THAT WAS NEVER EVEN SERVICED returned to me. If all you want is passport photo taken, this place is probably fine. But if you need something done with a camera *or* want the simple courtesy of a business that's willing to pick up the phone and call its customers, go elsewhere. read more
