This attractive 18th century house in the heart of historic Rye was home at different times to the…read morenovelists Henry James and E F Benson. It is now in the care of the National Trust. The house is largely restored to how it would have been when James lived there, and most of the exhibits focus on his tenure and the myriad of fascinating visitors he received. Three ground floor rooms are open to the public, as well as the surprisingly large town garden, complete with James's favourite mulberry tree. Alas, the garden room in which he did much of his writing was destroyed by an enemy bomb in World War II. Practicalities The house is a short walk from the church, or a short but very steep walk up from the quayside. Accessibility is somewhat limited: some of the streets around are heavily cobbled with pebbles; there are 3 large steps up into the house, as well as no lavatory on site; the garden has gravel paths; and the rooms are also fairly small, and heavily furnished.

This is just due to the age of the building that it is not possible to take the buggy round and that had to be left behind. So I would suggest leaving this until your youngest child is about 4yrs old - old enough to be interested in seeing the beautifully laid out rooms and learn a bit about the past. We visited during the autumn but apparently when the weather is fine there is a lot ot do in the gardens at the back. Exit is through the gift shop. This was wonderfully stocked so expect to be forking out for toys and novelties to take home. There are pay and display carparks down the highstreet or park in the Battle Abbey car park.

On busy days they require pre-booked reservations which can be made at no cost. I suggest planning 1.5 hours to see the highlights or recommendations found on the free map at each entrance. There are places to sit and relax with a coffee or tea at a counter service cafe or a place with table service. There is a coat and bag check available to the left once you enter through the main entrance. I'm not sure if there is a cost for it.

As with all London museums, there is security checking all backpacks, but this museum was checking for alcohol! When you see all the school teens sitting on the stairways (perhaps waiting for parents to pick them up?), then the alcohol check is understandable. Out of all the displays, my favorite was the dimly lit Treasures room. Each piece exhibited tells an important story beyond what you actually see like an Iguanodon tooth from the Mesozoic strata and found by Gideon Mantell (or his wife) and the rivalry that ensued between Mantell and Owen, who later usurped Mantell's contribution in discovering the first known dinosaur species and shaping the early understanding of dinosaurs. While I find the digital text for each display as being the true treasures, only 1-2 people can read at a time so you feel a bit rushed if you're a person (like me) who reads everything, yet people are behind you waiting their turn. In addition to the wonderful displays, there is a photo booth whereby you can have 3 photos taken against a green screen depicting a dinosaur encounter. What they don't tell you upfront is that the photos are NOT free and can be downloaded (depending on the package you choose) from £12 to £22 pounds. When I asked the staff for information on particular exhibits, I found them to be more than helpful and friendly, too. Allow time for this expansive gem.

Just don't dare sit anywhere like on some stairs in the corner or some overzealous guard will kick you right out. But otherwise you'll have a great time. The exhibits are from both sides and the trusts aim is to recognise the contributions all made for their respective countries. The setting is where the land army women lived during the war. There are examples of the graffiti they left. This is a charitable trust and all work hard to make this somewhere worth visiting. There is good access for disabled people. Car Parking is free. Admission fees are £3.00 for adults. £2.00 concessions. Children were free when this was written but you need to check that is still the case. Open from Easter to October on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 11.00 to 17.30. Friday also during school hoidays.

It exhibits the history and past of Winchelsea through artefacts such as maps and pottery. It is a very small museum, being housed in just one large room. It wasn't thrilling but it had it's interesting moments.
