Looking for something odd to do on a Sunday afternoon? IDK why, but I ended up at the Ryer Island Ferry, AKA "The Real McCoy II" or "Cache Slough Ferry". What the heck, who doesn't love a boat ride? (Don't all of you raise your hands at once!) As we pulled up to the crossing arm, we could already see the ferry coming back from the other side of the river. Soon, it was on our side and the crossing arms went up. Off went the three or four cars that were on the ferry. As soon as the last car came off the ferry, the crossing arms went down. Hey wait!!! We didn't get to drive on! We were sitting there a little lost, until Julie read the sign and said, "The ferry only travels aross the river every twenty minutes." We sat there and the time clicked away. Finally, the crossing arms went up and we were allowed to drive on the ferry. We drove on the deck to the front of the ferry. How cool is this gonna be? The last car was loaded on to the ferry and we were off to the other side. Two or three minutes later, we made it safe to the other side of the river. We exited the ferry and drove up the levee, parked, and watched the ferry go back and forth for about an hour. The return trip to the other side of the river was pretty much the same as coming across the first time. LOL All in all, it was a fun little trip. I'm sure I'll do it again sometime!!!

The Ryer Island Ferry AKA The Real McCoy II is so much fun to cross when having an 'adventure' for the day on the beautiful serene California Delta. Cris crossing the sloughs and visiting the local farms to taste their wines or crops makes for a great adventure discovering the different islands and what crops are on them. I've grown up on the Delta and I've always discovered new places and secret beaches to picnic at! The ferry crosses over from Rio Vista CA 84 (Cache Slough), once there, go left onto West Ryer Island Rd or go right on East Ryer Island Rd. CA 84. Either way will bring you to another ferry, the J-Mack. No services on Ryer Island so make sure you stop and fuel up in Rio Vista, or wait till you cross the J-Mack and head towards Walnut Grove where there's limited services. Its free to cross either ferry. If you head west (left) you'll come to a bridge; Ryer Island Bridge (no signs of bridge name, just road signs) and that way will be a continuation of HWY 84 The Real McCoy is a fixture that's been on the Delta for many, many moons! Run by Caltrans. It runs every 20 minutes on the hour. If your kids are in love with anything that's got an engine you can pull over and take a look. The captain might even invite you aboard to sound the horn! My little guy got to push the blue button and sound that LOUD horn! He showed us one of the 2 huge Cat yellow engines! Its a fun and smooth 2-3 minute ride that's run along a cable.

This commuter ferry is operated by CalTrans and is constantly breaking down. It can not be depended on a daily basis.

I arrived around opening time (6:00pm), and there was just a short line for entry. With so much to see and admire about this place, the walk thru was much longer than I expected, though that's partly cuz I didn't know you could pass people till I reached the mid-point. It's only one-way through the various pathways and illuminated tunnels that make up this experience, but if people stop and block foot traffic for long periods of time (for instance, families telling their toddler to look at every single doll and figurine in the windows and displays, or having them pose to take pictures like tourists), there's enough space to just pass them. Widmer World presents a range of themes and collections, including Disney (mickey mouse, toy story, disney princesses, etc), Minions, Snoopy, Santa, Abominable Snowman, geese, penguins, and stuffed animals galore. Cardboard cutouts with artwork, inflatables in various characters, moving props and decor, and animated xmas figures. Detailed miniature displays of various scenes including a charming village, a carnival with ferris wheels, roller coasters, and hot air balloons, and a festive model railroad with multiple trains moving along the tracks. It's so much more than a light show lined with impressive displays all around. It's a whimsical wonderland with lots of moving parts and interactive exhibits to delight guests of all ages. There's a scavenger hunt to find 12 gnomes, as well as a Mr. Potato Head coin toss game, and at the end of the walk thru, there's a guest book you can sign. In the front of the house, a giant chair is available for photo ops, along with more holiday lights and decorations. There are also signs directing visitors on where to find street parking (since you can't park in the court where this event is located).

As a sideline, Windmill Ranch is also a tourist attraction.... for a donation of $5.00, you can roam around Windmill Ranch all you want. Call ahead, though, to make sure someone would let you in when you get there. Quite a bit of variety... small ones, big ones, tall ones, short ones. There is enough to see from the road-side, though. OR you can jsut check out the pictures I took ( http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ixWizlQ3uiHOZmJAWKIZ7Q?select=R5AitKI3FgM60cv9TksMOQ ). Something else you'll learn is what CutOuts are. Take a look at Windmill Ranch's gates, they're the Black, flat silhouette objects attached to the fence gate. I didn't know anything like that existed until I rode by this display in Clements - ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/als-metal-cutouts-lockeford#hrid:zILH5LpQ435QlGm8Yb-oSw ). This far-fetched art / craft is so exclusive to the rural community, no one has even contributed an entry in Wikipedia! Frank Medina, the owner / proprietor, claims to had over a thousand of these Windmills... before his Divorce. I guess the Big "D" had an effect on his finances, that's the reason for the suggested donation. I was thinking to myself of adopting one of these puppies... but I wouldn't want Windmills sprouting up from the ground like weeds. Who would I call to Spay or Neuter these things?

Drumroll...... For…read moremy widely anticipated 500th review, I present to you the upside-down airplane!!! Now I had a hard time agonizing over whether or not I wanted to put this little known local curiosity up into the spotlight, but I figured that it would be worth it for you yelpers! So, what exactly is the upside-down airplane? Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. You gather a bunch of friends with a heady sense of adventure and get in the car. Start out in Fremont on Morrison Canyon Road and go past the residential area and then go up into the mountains and wind around for a bit and choose the right forks in the road, and you'll reach a dead end. At this dead end, you can see some gates barring you from entering any further into private property. If it's a sunny day or you just happen to have good eyes, you can spot this little airplane that is built upside down on top of this tower. How curious... If you're out at night or if you're unlucky, an old man with a big light will come out of his trailer and chase you away. That means RUN FOOLS!!!!! With your heartbeat thudding wildly in your ears, you drive down the windy mountain road, your demise only an arms width away, until it somehow dumps you off in Sunol. Don't worry...680 is nearby, so you can hop back on the freeway and mosey on home. If you're here for other reasons, there are lots of private little spots to pull off on the side of the road, and you'll often see cars parked off to the side with the windows fogged up. I wonder what they could be doing in there? Hm. There you have it Yelpers! You have torn from me the one spot that no one has ever heard of. Don't abuse it too much! So what's the story about this place? I guess since I'm writing an expose, I should go all the way... Apparently the upside down airplane is the location of a test antenna site for a company called TRW. The wire mesh model of the upside down airplane is supposed to act like an antenna. There are lots of antennas set up around here for whatever purposes, who knows? Supposedly they are still in use. They've been up here for many many years, and been the source of entertainment for many high school and college kids. This spot is passed down through word of mouth and car rides at night...until now. Watch out, they have security here year round and will chase you away. Why? Because you're not supposed to be here. If you would like to pursue this curiosity some more there are many pictures for your entertainment. And if you're lucky, maybe I'll take you up there myself one day ;)

There are statues of the saber tooth there and Fred, some dinos. Lots of purple and orange colors. It's not only just Flintstones theme as there are bunnies, aliens, Terracotta warriors and an eclectic mix of decor. Neat, fun and interesting stop if you're nearby and on the way somewhere else.

For decades, this prominent feature in Hillsborough hills just off the scenic route Hwy 280 brought happy feelings to passers by! Of course it's been a curiosity for decades in existence... but wait! All it is, a wonderful single family residence, with a twist in a story full of intrigue & litigation! And it has its own Wikipedia page! I've told myself, Grey, you live close by, you've got to write about the Flintstones House! It's a curiosity worth noted, yet a source of controversy to its neighbors! A colorful authentically looking residence in the affluent Hillsborough community uniquely affected the inner moods within the neighborhood, while much of the story remained hidden from public eye. The listing wasn't on the Yelp maps until recently, a yelper put it on during the pandemic, the house itself has been gracing the hill for decades in existence. The Flintstones house has been renovated & changed hands some years ago... I believe it used to sport an off white stucco, at some point it got repainted bright orange & purple... sold in 2017 & that's when complaints began. As the storytelling goes, the original Flintstones suburban sprawl developed in real life! Much controversy to it in the recent years due to the current owner coloring it even brighter burnt color resembling the cave & decorating the yard even more...beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Neighbors considered yard decorations an eye sore! So they brought forth the law suits. The installations of dinosaurs became a point of contention. Maybe historic inaccuracies were getting on their nerves? :-) After all, all we know is that Fred & Wilma enjoyed the company of their pet dinosaur Dino, but were there many others in the Stone Age? What about a Giraffe, a woolly mammoth, and a Fred Flintstone himself?! I understand neighbors didn't want any attention in the affluent town they reside in. Well, the owner won the law suit! She gets to keep her dinosaurs! Not only that, but also $125K from the city for originating the architectural review in the first place! And we the public got to enjoy this amazing architectural creation for years to come! *Well, he packed his guitar and his bar-room tan, Gotta get some miles behind him as fast as he can, Another destination, some place else to play. *But as the night approaches, a change is in the air His heart is pumping fast, he's got no cares The music befriends him, it can take him anywhere It's a honky-tonk engagement But there's no better place to play His mind feels like crazy pavement He's getting crazed out every day [ Review #766 w 2 pix on May 2, 2023 ] Flintstones House! So if you have multiple people speaking or children being children, the sound carries to the point it's unpleasant. It couldn't be made into a park because the noise would be deafening. The Plaza has little to no greenery and only receives sunlight during certain points of the day and year, generally being a concrete shaded rather cold space with tables that go largely unused. It would liven up the area dramatically if they put in a small coffee shop that had games you could check out (like Salesforce Park), but my guess is they have to keep it a community space for tax purposes. In my opinion the seating at Growers Square and the Wells Fargo Fountain are far more successful. They're both more comfortable and have a mix of shaded and sunny areas. So all in all, while the idea of the Plaza (with it's beautiful tiled backdrop and fountain) is great, the actual usability of it day to day is fairly low.

Half of the seating area was covered by shade when we visited, which was a relief on a hot Sunday afternoon. The glass and ceramic mosaic mural along the wall, titled Water Light, is a beautiful reflective art piece by Jason Middlebrook, whose works connect art, history, and nature. The arcs of water flowing from the jets blend in with the artwork on the wall beautifully. The biggest surprise was the wooden grand piano at the corner of the plaza adorned with images of tiny trees and polka dots whose colors match the mural in the background (part of the Painted Piano Project). We got to play and listen to lovely melodies while relaxing in this simple yet delightful space.
