While a little thick, the batter was just perfect (and I usually don't like battered food). I also had the octopus. It was outstanding. It's easy to overcook octopus, but they didn't here. And I enjoyed a great white wine. A thoughtful place with declicious food. And the server was friendly and quick.

This place has the added advantage of having some seat cushions they add to their seats. Dinner doesn't start until 8 PM, so be warned. We had some lovely dishes. The watermelon salad did not say that it came with chunks of salmon on it, so FYI if you order that. Pick a spot show was huge and very good. The order of croquettes is probably meant for three or four people, and for two people there were too many of them we couldn't eat them all. We shared a monk fish main plate after all that and it was also very tasty. The potatoes were a little plain that came with it but otherwise really good. Service was OK, it was very difficult to get the waiters attention when we finally wanted to leave and even after asking for the check.

I went out for dinner expecting the usual fare of bread and jamón and other such things but didn't have a place in mind. I chose Montero because it looked nice and cozy and was pretty close to the beaten track of tourist restaurants between the Plaza Mayor and the Cathedrals. This place however blew my mind. Everything we had was excellent. The rice tapa dish which sounded boring turned out to be the most flavorful stew of rice and cheese I've ever tasted. The picarones were the best I've had in Spain, and the salmorejo soup was as tasty as any I have had. I considered going back to Montero on my 2nd day in Salamanca, but decided to broaden my horizons by trying another place nearby, which turned out to be lackluster. If I ever travel to Salamanca again, I will definitely have to visit Montero.

The veggie burger (with carrot sauce) We ordered a single order of bread to start (€1) and also got two little shots of spiced garbanzo soup with it. We heard the server make sure it was vegan before she brought it. Tasty and a warm welcome on a cold day. I'd order a whole bowl of it if I saw it on the menu. Our server recommended the rissoto - an excellent choice. It's made with wheat and a creamy sauce, with zucchini and carrots mixed in. Portion size was perfect. If you can't tell in the photo - it's a pretty thick cylinder! Overall - impressed with the food quality and the service. Vegans rejoice. If you're eating with non-vegans - everyone will be happy!

They showed us the way since it was a bit hard to explain from where we were. It turned out to be three short blocks from Plaza Mayor, the heart of the Old Town. Our improvised local guides recommended that we go with the menu of the day, which at 10.50 euros/person for a three course meal (first course, main course, dessert) also including bread and wine was a real bargain. The restaurant is clean and cosy. It opened 15 years ago and is run by three siblings: Ramon, a very friendly and helpful waiter, his brother, who is the main chef, and his sister, who is the pastry chef. We went with the menu of the day and had four choices for each of the first and main courses and even more choices for the dessert. For the first course we had a tasty Galician-style octopus dish served on a potato bed and salmorejo, which is a room-temperature creamy tomato-based soup served with diced Spanish ham and olive oil that had a good garlic kick. For the second course, we had two meat dishes: an extra-tasty roasted piglet and bull tail. For dessert, we had flan and a real smooth San Marcos cake, all home-made. I really recommend this place. It's such a find and they are so kind that I would love to see the owners do well and more of us enjoy it. It's closed Mondays. Lunch time runs through 4pm. Open for dinner too, of course.

It was fun watching the chefs prepare the dishes. We felt like we were watching Top Chef. Great atmosphere. We had a variety of tapas, all excellent. We had the Pork skewer marinade Moorish style, the smoked Iberian top shoulder pastrami bun, grilled pork belly roll, the lamb "pincho" oaxaca, and white wine. The most interesting item was the lamb "pincho". We were told to eat it from the bottom. The top had a chocolate syrup. It was a combination of savory and sweet. We really liked it! I really wanted to try the braised scallop, but was pretty full by then. In fact, we gave some of the pork skewer to our friends who were at the next table. For tapas, it's on the pricey side, but the taste, quality, culinary experience and presentation outweighed the prices. The staff was friendly and helpful when we were looking through the menu.
