In fact, I will say that the rolls here always seem to be super soft & fresh. I think they only bring a few out at a time and this is key. What I also love here is that, other than the cold rolls and banh mi, everything else is made to order by the kitchen. So there's a short wait for your pho, goi salad, bun bowl etc (all around $10-12)... but it's definitely worth it. Eat in and you get these beauties served on big white bowls or plates... it's a little classier than your average Viet takeaway joint and I can appreciate that. As always, something that's super important to me is service, and these guys are so friendly & efficient. Overall, I think the fact that I'm Duchess of both stores kind of speaks for itself! Located in a small group of shops along Payneham, it has very average signage, so slow down when approaching, otherwise you might miss it. The restaurant's interior is typically decorated with Chinese themed paintings of various genres, a terrible colour scheme and tacky Chinese ornaments throughout the space. Never one to be turned off by these places knowing we are here mainly for the food. We were warmly greeted by the only staff on the floor. We were offered drinks after giving us a few minutes to peruse the menu. We ordered jasmin tea, because they didn't have chrysanthemum tea. To our horror, in a Chinese restaurant, we never expected our tea to come from a teabag. First black mark for the night. We were super eager to get some meals delivered so quickly placed our order. These included chicken with tree mushrooms, crispy garlic spare pork ribs, fish hotpot and prawns coated in salty egg yolk. Other generic dishes included the jellyfish, hot and sour soup and garlic French beans (long beans to everyone else) with minced pork. Second black was awarded to the chicken and tree mushroom dish. From memory, the chicken meat used was thigh and not breast, explaining the dryness. Secondly, the lack of tree mushrooms was very much noticed and missed. Lastly the dish was too salty with hardly enough chillies. Moving on to the third black mark, that was given to the prawn dish. This dish has a heavy batter which was not what we remembered. They were heavy on the butter which destroyed the delicate balance of the saltiness of the egg versus the lightness of the prawns. Other than those dishes mentioned, everything else was good. The price increase has been noted, so is the lack of ambience. This restaurant has changed owners since our last visit and its success is reflected in the lack of diners present. A real shame, as this used to be one of our top five for Chinese cuisine in Radelaide. We might go back in a few month's time to see if any improvement has been made.

Wow - all I can say is wow!…read more It took us a while to visit Carmel's Cafe Bar And Grill, mainly because I remember this place when it was the magnificent silver service restaurant Limeburners, then Awganix. I pine for those restaurants, especially the former ... but I digress ;) Carmel's is a more informal affair, but the food is magnificent - I'm not using that word lightly either! We started with warm house-made bread served with olive oil, olives and dukkah - absolutely delicious. For main I ordered the Kansas Style slow smoked red gum 'Pulled Pork' - here's the description: 'Smoked over red gum for hours, served with a fennel, apple & mixed nut slaw, cheese and spring onion potatoes and a fluffy buttered roll. A sure favourite!' Oh yes, I'm already dreaming of when I can have this again - the pork just fell apart when I skewered it with my fork, and had a spiciness which wasn't too overpowering, but gave it a bit of a kick. I'm not normally a coleslaw person, but this was delicious - the potatoes served under the pork were an unexpected treat! This meal was seriously mouth-watering - and only $26! The serves are enormous (I think they are competing with The Barn next door), and way too much for me ... but I made a valiant effort, and made sure I ate all that pork!! My partner had Dave's American Pork Ribs - dunno who Dave is, but he sure knows how to cook ribs - yummy!! This is definitely not a place to take vegetarians - there are a few token veg menu items, but the meat is definitely the star of this place. I would have given Carmel's 5 stars - but there was a very loud table of 12 seated right next to us, and they were so loud and obnoxious that we couldn't really have a conversation between ourselves. I noticed that there was a separate room nearby, and think that the staff should have moved them into there so the rest of us could enjoy our meals in peace. Apart from that, I am very much looking forward to coming here again and sampling more menu items ... that's if I can get away from that amazing pulled pork ... hmmmm ... ;)

Although we arrived fairly early - 6pm - on a Thursday (steak specials night) I was surprised that there weren't many people there. Last time we came was on steak specials night too and it was packed! When I got the menu I understood why. While the steak specials are ok, they are not what they were last time I was here. Last time I'm sure they were under or around $20 each, this time they were about $5 - $7 off the regular price. Still, I knew the quality was going to be good so I didn't mind too much. I love the ambiance inside this place. Music playing softly, dim lighting, lots of wooden tables, an enclosed and added on paved outdoor area and a lovely fireplace going right behind us. I thought the menu had lots of great options even for non meat eaters. I was intending to eat steak tonight seeing as I was here so I had a look at the specials and noticed a 300 gram black onyx rump. I probably don't get out much but I hadn't heard of black onyx before so I asked the waiter. He was very lovely and said he'd go and check with the chef as he didn't want to misinform me. The waiter told us simply that it's a cross between Wagyu and Black Angus beef. That sold it for me so I decided to go for that. Now every time I've ordered steak I've asked for it medium-rare but always thought it was cooked too much. I was just a little afraid of what I'd get if I asked for it rare. I mentioned this to the waiter and he said they could always put it back on the grill if I thought it was too rare so I chose to have it cooked rare. Hubby went for the 350 gram scotch fillet which he chose to have cooked medium rare. We also ordered some bread with a trio of butters. The bread was really nice. Very toasty warm and crispy and those delicious butters just melted on it when we buttered it on. My only complaint was there was not enough bread to the butter! We were hungry and went through those few slices very quickly. The butters were seeded mustard, tuscan herb & garlic and bacon jam. I liked the herb and garlic one the best. The seeded mustard was ok but I didn't notice a strong taste. The bacon jam was also ok but it had a strange sweetness to it. It was a great starter though, accompanied by a delicious house cabernet sauvignon. The mains looked soooo good when they came out! The Black Onyx is on the left and the Scotch Fillet is on the right. I'm not going to review them separately as we both were in raptures with our meals. The meat was just so gorgeously tender and I definitely made the right choice in ordering it rare. The waitress who brought the food out to us came back a few minutes later to make sure it was ok but the original waiter who'd seen us at the door, also came back a little while after that to make sure it was ok for me and that I didn't want it cooked a little more. I thought that was really great service. I honestly wanted to go into that kitchen and shake the chef's hand. I don't have steak very often so I want it to be good when I do and this was really exceptional. I didn't try any of hubby's but gave him some of mine and he said they had similar seasoning but mine tasted "meatier". I'm not sure what that meant but he liked it. The fries and salad were really good too. You can tell they source quality ingredients and are proud of what comes out of their kitchen. As mentioned, this was not our first trip to Carmel's and I have to say we have been impressed every time we've gone, whether we've had steak, pasta or pizza. The food and service have always been great and I would definitely recommend this place if you are wanting a nice night out.

I have been looking for Banh mi place down this end of town since I moved here. I noticed the sign…read moreon the road as I drove past the store. Banh mi signs always catch my eye. This store serves lots of different takeaway options. Yiros, Banh Mi, Cold Rolls, Pies, cake, etc... Kind of one of those confused deli's. But, I am always willing to try a Banh Mi. I am not going to let that affect my decision. A few options are available: Spicy Pork, Lemongrass Chicken, avocado or tofu. I went for the lemongrass chicken. The roll was fresh and crunchy, the carrot was well pickled, herbs and cucumber were fresh. The chicken had good flavour, but probably could have been marinated for longer. My only fault would have to be that there was a bit too much carrot in this roll. Maybe this was just a one off. Not bad Banh mi out of the city. But, not the best. I will give them another go though, maybe I caught them on an off day.

Like the previous reviewer said, we were surprised by the mix of varying nationalities of foods. The owners are Korean and so it went without saying we decided to go down the Korean route. We ordered a stonepot bibimbap, beef and noodle stew as well as a medium serve of Korean boneless spicy fried chicken (see picture - the take away pizza container was full before this picture was taken). The bibimbap was superb. There was a lot of beef, pan fried mushroom, seaweed salad etc. You don't always get the mushroom and seaweed salad in a lot of bibimbaps but they made the dish. The stonepot could have been left on the stove a tiny bit longer to give you the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl (one of the best parts of stonepot versions of bibimbap), but then again that's just a personal preference. The beef and noodle stew only had a very subtle flavour, but that's similar to all Korean restaurants. My tip is don't be afraid to load up on the pepper they supply. The boneless spicy fried chicken is where this place stood out. If you like sweet and spicy flavour combinations, then definitely try this. It is covered with peanuts which stick to the sticky coating. It does cost $24 (I think) for a medium takeaway serve but like I said earlier the small serve will fill up an entire pizza box and you will most definitely have left overs! I ate this dish everywhere in Korea, and this place does the best version of it I have eaten in Adelaide to date.

Their menu consists of pho, summer rolls and vermicelli noodles and banh mi sandwiches. Both my vermicelli noodle and husband's banh mi was great, perfect portion not gigantic. Their BBQ pork is more like spam to me, rather than actual pork. Great food, service and reasonably priced. The only compalint is no WiFi for being a cafe, but that might be just an Aussie thing.

After being handed the menu for breakfast, I had a real hard time trying to choose between the Matcha Pancakes and The Classic (with salmon). Although I adore pancakes, I had to go with something a little more traditional for my first time. Classic it was! This dish features Grilled Atlantic Salmon, Aji-Tama (Salted Soft Boiled Egg), sweet potato salad, with Yuzu Vinaigrette Pickled Veg, rice & miso. The dish itself looked really pretty, just check out the photos. Presentation is well thought out and planned. The salmon was cooked through with a salty and sweet sauce. It tasted similar to teriyaki sauce. The sweet potato salad was mixed in with other vegetables and a kewpie mayo style sauce. Worked so well with the salmon and rice. I really loved the egg as well, it was slightly salty and really gives depth to the dish. Wash this all down with miso & tofu and you have a really perfect breakfast. I was so impressed, I am really looking for any excuse to return. Keep on the look out for my updated review when I get my hands on some Ramen! OH YES!

The idea of a Japanese breakfast combined with a photography lesson lured me to Black Dog Gallery…read moreon an early Sunday morning. The lovely Jun allowed us to utilise the entire space for our photography purpose. The warm and cosy contemporary interior provided a lovely backdrop for our morning lesson. Once coffee orders was placed and received, we got down to selecting our breakfast. I opted for the classic which had grilled salmon, served with sweet potato salad, miso and rice. Other dishes ordered include the tradition breakfast, salmon bagel and ramen pizza. My breakast was delicious! Nothing to fault here. I believe everyone else enjoyed theirs too from the positive feedback making its rounds. They have ramen noodles from 10am, which wasn't yet available to us being early birds. It just means I will have to come back! I highly recommend this place because you can see the quality and love put in to this place where the food including the sweets made in-house is equally tasty. The owners are clearly dog-lovers hence the name. A small picture frame can be seen of their black pooch on top of the sweets cabinet. This place is not very big, so come early, as it can fill up quickly.
