This liquor shop might arguably have the best selection you'll find anywhere in DC. I doubt that it's the most you'll find, but in terms of quality I would be really surprised if there was somewhere that surpasses it, and I've been to all the really well known ones in the area (Schneider's, Ace, Calvert-Woodley, etc). The number of top-end liquors is astounding, from rare scotches, bourbons, mezcal, armagnac, on and on. There is of course wine (some really nice Burgundy and Aussie Shiraz options), a huge sparkling section, sake, sherry, and a passable beer aisle. But the real star here is the booze. Price wise, it's a bit more than you'll find in other shops, and I almost dinged them half a star for that, but to be honest I consider that the cost of convenience for a centrally located liquor store fronting this much premium selection. They even do multiple tastings per day, and not just the cheap stuff. Honestly, I couldn't believe how many rare bottles on the shelves that I had never heard of from labels that I actually follow quite well. I know where I'll be doing my Christmas shopping this year! If you've got a boozehound in your life I suggest bringing them here and watching them drool. read more

Every time I've been to S & R Liquors I've felt like an honored guest. Vinnie & Ray have always gone out of their way to make me feel like I'm an important customer. And, to be honest, I'm not. I've come in probably a half dozen times. Ever. Nothing against them. I'm just not a big drinker (these days). But when I DO buy something, I want to get it from them. Even when they're slammed and working with other customers, they take a brief moment to meet my eyes and nod, smile, or wave hello. And they know their stuff. Ray is knowledgeable, but Vinnie is usually the guy I go to when I can. He is just so passionate about his business and you can see it when you interact with him. His recommendations have never done me wrong. And if you like tequila, be sure to mention it! We probably spent 20 minutes discussing tequila (and other mezcals) when I mentioned it was an interest of mine. He'll definitely point you in the right direction. But his wine knowledge is also fantastic. I got some amazing rosés from them recently. Basically, if you want an amazing customer experience and a fantastic selection, S&R is the place to go to. If you're black don't go here. I visited this establishment with my boyfriend (we are both black). I was followed in the store, and someone asked if I needed help. I thought this may have been normal, until I was incorrectly accused of stealing while reaching in my bag for my wallet. An older man who I believe to be the manager or perhaps the owner, said "I saw you." Confused I asked him to repeat himself, he said "I saw you put that in your bag." Astonished and insulted to the highest degree, I explained that the only thing that I got from my bag was my wallet, which was clearly in my hand. I then proceeded to show him my bag just so he could know for sure. He did not apologize, but instead just looked in embarrassment. I am not sure what for, when it was I who was embarrassed to the fullest. Black people, do not shop here. read more

This is the best liquor store I've visited since leaving California. The employees are super knowledgeable and the store had what I wanted for serious cocktails. The guy who helped me explained the difference between the two rums I was considering and then gave me an education about the difference between a cheap orange curacao and a pricier one (the quality of brandy base--who knew?!). The prices were reasonable and the atmosphere pleasant. I'm a fan. I'm a Virginia resident but this place is definitely worth driving to from Fairfax County. So pleased! read more

Found this hidden gem while perusing yelp finding a liquor store I haven't found yet. They are few and far between now. Prices are good here and although it's not a huge store the selection is awesome. I'm mostly a Scotch or Bourbon guy and I like Asian Whisky as well. While I was here I noticed there were a lot of regulars!! They were actually giving their pizza to customers. Where do you find that anymore??!! Especially a liquor store. Also while I was there a gal was there picking up some rare beer. I have never heard of it. It was a premium beer $9 a bottle. She bought the entire case because she couldn't find it anywhere else. The owners are two brothers Ray and Vinnie. Both super friendly. Offered some bourbon samples as they could tell I was an alcoholic. (Joking. Sorta) I must have been here an hour. I usually just buy what I need and get out but here I felt like I was going to Floyd's barbershop in Mayberry. Anyhow it's located in the heart of D.C. I feel like I'm just repeating what others have already said, but it's the truth. Vinnie and Ray have the best selection of liquors in the area, and despite that, they constantly bring in new brands and special editions to try out - usually with their customers' input, which is always appreciated. Great tastings, and always ready to pour a sample of something when they have a recommendation based on how well they know their customers' individual preferences. I live in VA and the ABC stores are beyond pitiful in terms of selection (hello five rows of Captain Morgan ... which is among the worst dark rums). S&R must have at least 50 different rums. Ditto vodka, gin, etc. So glad to have S&R as my go-to place instead. read more

Location is great if you work in the area and are looking for a reasonably priced, quality bottle. The options are fantastic, if not surprising (I found quality cachaça there that I haven't found anywhere else).
