Tour group makes their way from the Great Workroom to the Research Tower.
    Juergen B.

If you're an aficionado of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this is a must-see destination. The 90-minute tour by trained docents gives you access to one of the architect's most noteworthy designs. Immerse yourself into Wright's world, walk the steps of those who roamed the Great Workroom on a daily basis and climb the Research Tower onto two floors that have been reimagined with the lab environs of past decades. Let the magic of this art moderne design spill over you as it did for employees and visitors from the 1940s onward when the facility was in actual operation. This tour does not disappoint. At the time of this writing, there is no fee or charge. Inside photography is not permitted.

Forteleza Hall - the airplane is suspended in the atrium, behind the closed curtains.

SC Johnson Headquarters tour was the last stop on my Frank Lloyd Wright Wisconsin trip and it ended…read moreup being a great finale. The tour is free, you just have to register online. The headquarters has free parking and then you check in at the Golden Rondells, which was originally part of the World's Fair and then moved to Racine. The staff was nice and friendly and our guide was wonderful; over the course of the tour we found out that she was previously a research scientist at SC Johnson. The tour takes you through the outside of the buildings where you can see the glass tubes which are a primary exterior design feature. We got to learn much of the history of SC Johnson and how Wright became involved. I had seen pictures of the interior of the Administration Building yet actually walking in was incredibly impressive. The actual room feels revolutionary; the Wright designed desks clearly influenced office furniture design. The columns that are the defining element of the room are unique and combined with the open space, the translucent ceiling and curved elements the main room is awesome. What a revolutionary design. Next up was the Research Tower which the company has renovated and opened for the tour. It is amazing to see how Wright designed a building that had such technical requirements. Working in this environment must have been inspirational. We did get to go down to the basement and through the system of tunnels to the Fortaleza Hall which shows some of the SC Johnson history. The hall is impressive and really well designed. A cannot miss tour, the architecture is awesome, the tour is well done and SC Johnson managed to over deliver. The fact that SC Johnson has maintained and renovated these Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and offered a free tour is such a wonderful community service. If you are anywhere near to Racine schedule a tour you will not regret it.

It's to the left of the front gate. Walk into that building. I really liked the tour - we had to cut ours short to get to Wingspread in time. The security guards were accommodating and walked us back to the main entrance so we could leave. I would recommend this tour - not my favorite but still very cool, and another off the master list of places to visit.

Kudos to however this library is being funded. 2) The books are taken care of. They don't look like they've been sitting untouched for decades. They look clean and in good condition. 3) Checkout is a breeze. You can be checked out or you can enjoy self checkout by scanning your card at a separate kiosk type deal near the counter. 4) You don't have to visit the library to checkout books! The Racine Public Library has an online checkout process that allows us to checkout electronic copies of popular books and read them on our devices. 5) You don't have to visit the library to return books you checked out at the library. There are drop boxes around the city where you can return books although it seems like they move from time to time. I thought there used to be one by Kohl's Food. I also thought there used to be one near Starbuck by the post office. Recently though, I found it at Lockwood Park on Ohio. All more convenient than going downtown to return books. 6) This library partners with other area libraries so you aren't limited to what is in the Racine location. 7) Location, location, location! It's so nice to have that whole wall of sunshine while shopping for books. This library is a very welcoming environment where you want to sit and read or research for a while. If you sit near the lake, it's a beautiful view you simply cannot beat.
