I came here in days of yore to see "Ant Noises," the controversial "Sensations" exhibit that Mr. Saatchi imported and palindromed from New York. I hated it. Like absolutely detested it and left repulsed and wanting to vomit then change my clothes and take a shower. In bleach. But, 7-8 years later, I still remember it. I remember Damien Hirst's "Last Supper" of pharmaceutical bottles; the giant ashtray; those disturbing morphed dolls; the frequently-discussed elephant dung Madonna 'composition.' And that, in my humble and non-Art History-schooled opinion, is exactly what art should do: provoke a reaction, and brand an image on your memory that recurs almost a decade later - albeit in your nightmares. Beautiful gallery with thought-provoking, if nothing else, exhibitions and installations. And of course I appreciate the free admission. read more

Love 'em or hate 'em....... Saatchi is a bastion of the Thatcherite era. As Saatchi and Saatchi, he and his brother marketed and advertised the Tories into power and kept them there for years. Then he put his capitalist cash into art and many rebelled and refused to sell and many more sold and became quite successful. One might take a view from a left wing perspective and decide he and his gallery represent something not to like. But based on that view one might want to question the Tate and its sugar trade heritage and all the awful injustices associated with that trade. But for me I just think its a very nice space that shows often interesting works and the oak flooring is really rather nice. The working class can kiss my arse I've got the foremans job at last! read more

The Saatchi galleries have a good pedigree in London but this is probably the weakest of its locations over the years. The gallery is now housed in a West London epic of building (the old Duke of York barracks). What it should do is respectfully use the old Duke of York barracks but juxtapose controversial modern art with its aged surroundings. Unfortunately the conversion of the Duke of York barracks has been clumsily done by AHMM architects. The spaces are cluttered with all of the paraphernalia of modern buildings; air conditioning vents, lights, cables, ducts, fire exits, cupboards and the rest. Now these things obviously have to be in modern buildings but they can be done with skill and care. The art is the standard Saatchi gallery fare. There are fewer big pieces than there used to be. There isn't anyone who seemingly can replace Hirst and his co. However, there is one great piece. You go down to the last box, gallery 13, in the basement. In there are a serious of wheelchairs filled with geriatric figures. All of them appear to be religious world figures - Arafat and co. They bump around the room, paint stripped off walls and chips taken out of supporting pillars. PS its free. Whoever has given it a two pound money rating on yelp seems to have missed that. read more

This gallery has recently moved to this amazing location, adjacent to King's Road, it takes a couple of minutes to get there from the Sloan Square Tube. The thing that makes this art space so cool is that you can organize a day of shopping and throw in to your day some culture. The Sattchi Gallery hosts contemporary art, with special interest in young artist, the building has two levels, and the space in general feels airy and modern. I went to see the Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art, and was pleased in general, I'm not an art expert, but it felt like the young Chinese artist showing here have a strong voice, and definite opinions on what it is China. Tradition, history, politics and modernity where represented in many ways. I was especially shocked with Cang Xing hyper-real sculptures, they are so mind-boggling, and visitors gravitate around the pieces trying to see if the sculpture breathes. I also loved that the gallery is small enough to have a quickie art fix, but big enough to come out pleased and inspired. read more

I saw a giant head made out of ashes. How many people can say that? Probably one of the thousands that visited the Saatchi Gallery's 'From Mao to Now' exhibit which showcased some of the finest modern artists that China has to offer. The venue is spectacular. The outside is white and regal and the interior is equally as impressive. There was an array of odd insights into the human experience, such as cracked out angel with putrid rotten wings laying face down on the floor, limp bodies hanging from hooks on the ceiling and decaying world leaders rolling around in mechanical wheelchairs too weak to use their power to carve history in their favour. If you want this experience memorialised you can always go to the gift shop and pick up a book or a postcard. This place is definitely worth a visit. And it's free, so you have no excuse not to go. read more

magnificent new gallery spaces in the heart of Chelsea. The building itself is an architecturally pleasing, and sets the mood for the art exhibitions there. The New Art From China exhibition is really good, showing contributions from a range of famous and new contemporary Chinese artists. Many of them have a deep political meaning as well. One surprise was that they allowed photos to be taken of the artwork! So don't be shy and bring your cameras along! An excellent gallery and one which I expect to visit frequently over the years. read more

The Saatchi Gallery is a wonderfully imposing building set in the refurbished Duke of York's HQ fronted by the tree lined greenery of the sports field (the original parade ground as Wolfiewolf remembers it in his TA days). Inside, it has been described as bland - but isn't that exactly what it should be? - a tasteful, clean, airy, modern space. The lack of confusing and competing structure lends itself to displaying the work, it doesn't try to impose on the art, dispaying the canvas on a blank canvas. How tempting it might have been for Saatchi to promote his gallery over the work in it. The collections change and are diverse, appealing to a wide range of tastes and interests. The chillingly realistic wheelchair bound world leaders trapped in the basement, endlessly bumping and colliding with each other, are eerie and fun - walk amongst them and play chicken with any that start to trundle towards you - dare you to stand your ground! Kirsten Stolmann's 'vaginal power and politics' work is horrible and vile - you could say it is thought provoking, or you could say she needs help. Peter Coffin's huge structures amuse and draw you in. There is a a lot more to see and appreciate. Don't miss the opportunity to sign up for the online art community - a bank of terminals is made available on the top floor. It's free and is now apparently the worlds largest art gallery website, embracing over 120,000 registered artists to view and network with. Cameras can be used without restriction and the gallery provides the excellent 'Picture by Picture Guide' - so refreshing to have a booklet that tells you exacxtly what's displayed, accurately and with no irrelevant padding. And it's only £1.50! Entry is free and the gallery will happily store your folding bike safely in the manned cloakroom in the basement, again free. Located on the vibrant Kings Road and just a hop and a skip from Sloan Square tube, The Saatchi Gallery is an almost unmissable addition to your itinerary list - 6 stars. read more

I can't believe it's taken me so long to get over to Chelsea and check this place out! The gallery takes over the Duke of York Headquarters, but has a new extension in the rear that joins the original building with walkways and glass sides. The flooring throughout the galleries is gorgeous light wood, with white walls creating the perfect backdrop for contemporary art. Although the collection rotates, I enjoyed the British Artists Now II exhibition immensely. Standouts for me were ground floor paintings by Kate Groobey and Nicholas Hatfull, Dick Evans' Black Grape, a giant black wave sculpture and Marcus Fosters' turquoise hot air balloon. The top floor Phillips de Pury & Company furniture design was really quirky and great that here at least, you can touch any of the products you like. With free entry, a cool shop for design-oriented gifts and a great restaurant adjoining - this is a lovely place to while away a Sunday afternoon. read more

This newly opened gallery in the 70,000 sq. ft. Duke of York HQ building on King's Road is definitely worth a visit! It has got an amazing exhibition on at the moment by a group of Chinese artist the planning of the gallery is cleverly done revolving around a central circulation spine; it makes way finding really easy. The materials used was marvelous Dinesen's Douglas Fir wide planks with white wash finish throughout all gallery spaces was simply breathtaking! The space available for the art pieces is really generous make every picture short so beautiful and easy to compose! Every of my friend who has recently visited this place was amazed by it! So it's a place not to be missed unquestionably! Simply brilliant! read more

my mom and I went here and it's a good place to go when you are tired from seeing everything at the V&A. It's doable in a short time. We went straight downstairs to the permanent installation with the oil (you have to see it for yourself) and then did a quick stroll through before heading back to our hotel. read more

I didn't know what to expect of the gallery or the current exhibition but was pleasantly surprised. The gallery really is a black canvas and a true asset as it shows off all the works wonderfully. The current exhibition (Newspeak: British Art Now Part 1) is an eclectic mix of work but very interesting. I did wonder why the gallery smelt of oil and when I visited the lower ground gallery I found out - the whole exhibit is a floor of crude oil - it made for a very interesting piece which perfectly reflected the minimal interior of the gallery. Another noticeable exhibit was a room full of speakers which emitted various noises - this at points could be heard throughout the gallery. It all sounds a bit avante garde and I am sure it is supposed to be. I really didn't know what to expect but ended up really enjoying the visit. The Joan Crawford alphabet was a particular favourite! I recommend you pay a visit - it's free, it's in a great location and I am sure the show has something for everyone. read more

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to pop by the Saatchi when I was last in London, just in time to see the New Art from China exhibition. It was a real insight. Somehow I immediately associated with the 'bloodline' series of portraits dealing with the definition of family in a situation when the state wedges itself into every relationship and 'fosters' every child. It reminded me of the tale of young Pavlik Morozov, who reported his father to the Soviet state for hogging grain and had him shot. Overall impressions with the gallery as a space - wonderfully positioned, spatious yet coherent, with very helpful young and knowledgeable staff. THe gallery shop downstairs is a good source of thoughtful gifts. Cloakroom and toilet likewise downstairs. Looked fully accessible. read more

The Saatchi Gallery recently re-opened in a refurbished barracks on the King's Road, and this makes the gallery space an astonishing setting for exhibitions. It is situated a few minutes walk from Slaone Square tube means that it is easy to get to, and the imposing nature of the building means it is hard to miss. As with the Saatchi philosophy, the works on display are often thought provoking, if not totally abstract, and are sure to incite a reaction when you first wander round the large open rooms housing the pieces. Not only al this, but the free entry means if you've an hour or two to while away, it makes perfect sense to do so in the gallery, if only to marvel at the building itself if the art on display is not to your liking. This place has a well deserved reputation for displaying Avante Garde artwork Whilst I dont respond well to modern art I still found many of the exhibits disdplayed here compelling and I was lucky enough to see some of Damien Hursts work.... that was nothing however when compared with the Chapman brothers staggering vision of Hell (before it was lost in a Warehouse fire) If you have a taste for the darker side of the human psyche then this should be well worth the trip! read more

Wonderful gallery close to public transportation and a variety of restaurants. Truly contemporary exhibits showcasing lesser known/unknown artists (i.e., not just another Picasso exhibit). The variety of subject matter, techniques, and materials was exceptional. The gallery is currently exhibiting more female artists than males (probably a 60/40 split) - as this was our first visit, I'm not sure if this is the curator's habit or chance. If habit, bravo. The art world has for far too long been dominated by men. Ironically, we had visited Tate Modern the day before and it currently has a Guerrilla Girls exhibit, but, of course, chooses to feature far more male artists than female (90/10 split, I would guess). Saatchi is practicing what Tate will only preach. read more

As one of the many museums in London the Saatchi Gallery seems to be highly under estimated. As a photography and art student I've visited many museums, however the Saatchi gallery stood out from the crowd. Althought it may still contain some of the same styles of art and photography work as the National Gallery and The Tate, the innovative way the gallery is laid out. There are three different levels all dedicated to to a specific style of art and photographic work, such as installations, pre-modern, post-modern, impressionist etc. I found this gave the Saatchi gallery a little something extra. Though browsing galleries is already an enjoyable experience and highly cultural this gallery in particular may the experience far more fun, the rooms in which the art is displayed are all conjoining and also vary in shape and size, this gives the gallery a far more comfortable and fun atmosphere to it making you feel more relaxed. This innovative design and layout in some ways makes the Saatchi Gallery a work of art in itself. Another incredible thing about this gallery is that admission is completely free! read more

I visited The Saatchi Gallery when it was still housed in County Hall. The Saatchi Gallery is easily my favorite contemporary art museum in the world. It was the first time I had been exposed to Damien Hirst's works - the guy who puts dead animals in tanks of formaldehyde- and to see them in person was awe-inspiring. We don't always like modern art, but about half of the museum was quite provacative and understandable. Glad we went and will go again.

I still love you Saatchi.. but step your game up! I've faithfully gone to every exhibition you've put on so far, but it's steadily gone downhill. The latest (current) exhibition featuring American artists is a disappointing step down from the Arabic one, which was a moderate step down from the debut Chinese exhibit. it's just, well, bleh. i'm not a huge fan of modern art. i studied art history. and some of my fave artists are of the modern bent. but i just don't like the saatchi. it's like they've taken everything that gives modern art a bad name and put it in one place. i saw about 3 pieces i thought had true beauty and/or merit out of the whole place. plus, the reeking smell of crude oil throughout left me with a migraine-like headache. while i think "20:50" is an interesting installation (and i say installation rather than piece), it seems unhealthily ventilated (or not at all). also, on the day i visited, they weren't allowing people to walk "into" it. i worried for the guards who stood near it all day. inhaling crude oil fumes for an 8 hour shift can't be good for them. i'd avoided this place for a long time. and maybe i'll avoid it more. it was a refuge on a rainy day walk, but sadly provided little comfort. read more

I loved the building, it was totally worth wandering up on a drizzly grey day and being transported to a place that houses completely surreal pieces of art. The light wooden floors that have barely been sanded down, have masses of people wandering over them looking at sometimes huge installations in brightly lit rooms that are balanced equally on either side. The current exhibition wasn't necessarily to my taste, but I loved the structure and the way the place was laid out and walking about the gallery was a really pleasant experience. The fact that it is free is a big plus, as most London museums and galleries are, because the sort of art they are showing as well, is very now, is very conceptual, and normally the public may not necessarily get to see something so fresh. So it is incredibly lucky that one is able to look at this type of art and what a wonderful setting to do so in too. The fact that there are quite a few floors, which are layered in a deliberate way so the view from each is worth looking at and a balcony to better see the art from a different perspective. read more

Tacky, copy of prints, old beds, dirty dishes,and crappy living in 1962, who needs to see this, I dont. And the costumes, forget it, Michael Jackson & Prince out pace these Rolling Stones costumes. Put this in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame. Total waste of my time which is precious as I come from San Francisco to see Funny Girl, with Sheridan Smith and Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close. Both shows were worth the trip across USA & Atlantic Ocean not this exhibit. read more

I adore the Saatchi Gallery. It's always got a great collection of absolute head scratchers that delights the cynic inside me. That's why I love this place for its contemporary art, which if it doesn't confuse you, will certain enrapture you. I can't for the life of me recall the names of any of the exhibitions I've attended, but if you go, you can head to the basement and see the huge pool of oil (or is it black paint?) that's absolutely pungent and a perfect example of Contemporary Modern Art that you'll spend hours pondering. I make sure I pay it a visit whenever I'm in the area because you can't go wrong with modern art that challenges all interpretations. Also great for photos of looking cultural when you have no idea what's going on. read more

If you enjoy modern art, this is a great gallery!!! It's just the right size - enough pieces for a diverse collection, but not big enough to make your head hurt. Much of the collection is really interesting. Even though it's completely free, there aren't a lot of people inside so you can really soak in the art. read more

the saatchi gallery is a really cool space in london for modern art. it's housed in a lovely spacious building with 15 different galleries that change fairly regularly. if modern art isn't your thing, it would probably be best not to come here, but if you're open minded to it, or like it, then it is definitely worth your time to come here. firstly, it's free entry which is always a beautiful thing, secondly the art is really diverse, and for me, visually pleasing. it's not too busy so you really get the chance to look at the different pieces without jostling for space. at the moment they also have a really good exhibition on various sunday times pieces through the years, which was cool. it's in a beautiful area of london, and has a lovely court yard out front also. read more

Love The Saatchi Gallery! The work is always varied and interesting, and there's so much to see. The shop is also good, with lots of great books and other items.
