We waited in line for about 15 minutes and it seemed like the lines just got longer and longer after we were seated. We tried four different sacher tortes at various cafes around Austria and I thought this one was the best. Moist with just enough jam and an smooth chocolate outside layer. We also tried the apple strudel, sacher sausages, and the asparagus and ham quiche. The apple strudel and the sacher sausages were okay but the quiche was a bit odd. I suppose it resembled a deconstructed quiche with a small thin crust and light dusting of egg, ham and asparagus sprinkled on top. Four stars for the sacher torte and three stars for the rest of the food.

If you're in Vienna, you've got to try the Sacher-Torte. And if you are going to try the Sacher-Torte in Vienna, then it had better be at the Hotel Sacher, right? (Though now that we're home, I see we should have also tried a slice from the Demel bakery. Who knew there'd been such an intense legal battle around cake?) We walked by the Hotel Sacher many times during daytime hours, as it's across the street from the Vienna State Opera and we were hopping on and off of trams nearby often. There was always a long line out the door, making us realize that if we wanted to eat at Cafe Sacher, we were going to have to do it way off-peak--such as after one of the many evening Mozart and Strauss holiday concerts with which we filled our evenings. And so, two weeks ago, on New Year's Eve eve, we took a tram and ended up back at Hotel Sacher around 10:30 on a Sunday night, when as it turned out there was still a line out the door, but at least a much shorter one, so we got a table after half an hour's wait rather than it taking an hour or two. Our wait was cold (hey, Vienna was always cold while we were there) so though the Sacher-Torte was what brought us there, I figured I should have a cup of goulash to warm myself up. The goulash was good, second only to what I'd have the following day at Café Landtmann ... but that's not what you're here for, I know. What you want to know is ... how was the Sacher-Torte? Forgive me ... but I was underwhelmed. It's not that the cake was bad, it's just that it was, well, extremely dry, and didn't have the dense, rich, chocolate flavor I was anticipating. The frosting, on the other hand, was everything that the cake itself was not. So you had a dry cake wrapped in rich fudge. I was conflicted, and was left thinking after each bite, "This is Sacher-Torte?" But before I start singing the chorus from "Is That All There Is?" with Peggy Lee, let me add that my wife says my problem with the Sacher-Torte was all on me--that Sacher-Torte is meant to be a dry cake, and for me to find fault with it because of its nature is misjudging it, because in its dryness, it's truly living up to the Platonic ideal of what it's meant to be. I'll let her have that ... for now. At least until I try a slice someday from Demel to compare. The Apple strudel, however, was so good, it vanished before I could photograph it! A final thought-- Expect to be surrounded entirely by tourists during your visit. I got no sense of there being any Viennese present, save for our waiters. Unlike the cozy atmosphere at Huth Gastwirtschaft, where we'd dined a few nights earlier, a meal during which we felt as if we were surrounded by locals enjoying a night out at their favorite restaurant, with Cafe Sacher there was a definite sense of the room existing for the tourist trade alone, which made the surroundings feel less authentic than I'd hoped it would be. Perhaps it was just our night, but it did leave me wondering about the customer base. I'd rate our overall experience there a 2.5, but since Yelp won't allow for that, and after my wife's input, I'll let them have a Yelp 3.

There is something to be said for being the original. During our recent tour of Vienna we tried many a cake and no Sachertorte was as good as the one at Sacher Cafe (The Annatorte at Demel was equal in deliciousness but that is a different cake and a separate review!). I found Sacher's original version to be more moist than most others I sampled throughout the city and the balance between the cake and ganache was perfect. I am confused by the numerous mentions of poor service as we had a splendid time and our waitress was warm and friendly. Also, there was no wait whatsoever. Perhaps because we sat in the smoking room and it was a weekday afternoon? But then again, the Viennese love their cigarettes and this place is a landmark so those can't be the reasons. We never felt rushed and lingered for a bit (without pressure to leave) to smoke and enjoy our coffees after we ate our desserts. Also, the atmosphere cannot be beat; it is like stepping back into a more opulent time with plush velvet seats and waitresses in formal uniforms. Touristy? Perhaps. But it is a must for any trip to Vienna.

Came for the *original* sachertorte. Was definitely not disappointed. We wanted in line for a bit, but were seated cordially by the window where we could see the crowd waiting for the Queen of Spain, who happened to be staying in the hotel that day. (We got to observe from the warmth of the cafe. Cue smug smile here.) As for the torte...creamy, chocolaty goodness, with a generous dollop of whipped cream on the side. I washed it all down with a glass of milk, hearkening back to my cookies and milk days as a child. Worth it even just for the fact that you get to say you ate sachertorte where it was invented.

This is where the world famous Sacher Torte is created. The Sacher Confiserie belongs to the Hotel Sacher. Right behind the Vienna Opera, next to Kaerntner Strasse Take the time and check it out, have a Melanche (Austrian Cappuccino) and a piece of Sacher Torte ........ then walk down Kaerntner Strasse to the Cathedral and spend all your money $$$$

We came with high expectations and were very surprised that the sacher torte did not live up to its famous name! It was extremely "dry" and with almost no filling of the "marmalade". What DID surprise us was the apple strudel! A must-have!! Big portion and very tasty. The capuccino was great too. In conclusion: dont waste 6euros for a piece of cake that is not worth even 2 euros.

Dry and hard sacher torte and ok strudel.

A tourist trap. Extremely dry sachet torte that's over priced. I say it's not worth the wait or trip but if you insist. .. Tip: Skip the long line by going to the smaller cafe two doors down. Like in most European places they allow smoking inside. It was horrible.

My husband and I were really excited to visit this cafe to get an original Sacher Torte. We were not disappointed! The Sacher Torte was delicious, the cafe is gorgeous and baby friendly (had a lift and space on the sinks in the bathroom to change baby). It was very clean, had a nice atmosphere and great staff. We even bought a Sacher Torte cake to go downstairs in the gift shop.
