Been coming to this Sacramento public library branch for a long time, but haven't visited in quite a few years. Recently, we stopped by to get registered for the summer reading program (can also be done online) and to get prizes, and got to see this library again. Basically, it's not changed at all. It's still in pretty good shape, lots of books throughout, a nice and bright children's section, and extensive sections for adults and teens too. The inside of the library is brightly lit and quite organized. There were not a lot of books on sale at the Friends of the Library book sales section, especially children's books were quite limited, but there's a ton of books to borrow! The library assistant was helpful in guiding us through redeeming our summer reading prizes which were 1 book each for my kids for registering and logging books they've been reading all summer, and I got a tote. Overall, this is still a pretty good library although it's not very big and architecturally, it's pretty basic. It also serves as the Franklin high and Toby Johnson MS library during the school year, but right now during the summer, it's just a regular public library. read more

Honestly not the best library. The layout is very odd to me. Went on a Saturday around noon and the library was very loud. Not a place to go relax to read, do research or work. Unfortunately I won't be back to this location. read more

could be better if girl at the front desk wasn't a know it all jerk. I asked for books on mental illnesses and she asked if I was trying to self diagnose instead of pointing out the section. Prior to that she inserted herself in a conversation I was having with someone else about a book I wanted to checkout. She just HAD to tell me that the book was fine print and very "textbook" in a condescending manner. It was exactly that kind of book I was looking for to do research for my students. She should have continued to online shop for clothes (i saw on her screen) instead of inserting herself in my conversation. I need my experience in the library to NEVER be like that again. I need her to mind her business, not make assumptions, and just answer the questions she's asked. the security guard (ebony I believe) was so helpful and she helped me more than the online shopper. excellent customer care (ebony). read more

They are only doing curbside pickup at this time during the pandemic. You text their number 916-269-2259 when you arrive, or shortly before you arrive. Make sure you have your library card number handy, in addition to your first and last name to text. I would go straight ahead and tell them I'm there for pickup and give them all that info from the get go. Once they confirm your pickup, they'll get it ready and leave it at the pickup table right at the front of the door of the building. The nice thing is that if you have multiple holds, they'll place it in a paper bag with your name labeled on it, so you'll know which is yours. From the first text to my pickup being ready, it was about 5 minutes, which was quick! They also renewed my library card in the process, which was nice. Really appreciated it! Hope they will be open to the public soon, but I understand the restrictions they have to keep in place for the time being. read more

This library is AMAZING! It's clean, the service people are really nice, and it's easy to find what you need. When you put a book on hold, the place where you pick it up is easy to locate. If you're having trouble searching for it, you can always ask a worker. Perhaps a kind fellow reader would help, too. Sacramento Public Library is a great one. FIVE STARS! Needed a study space while visiting Sac today, so here I am... Parking, is available on either side of the library. Because this library is shared with the high school located next door, ALL visitors must sign in & out after their visit. My safety was reassured when I saw an actual security guard as soon as I entered the library entrance. So the layout of this library is pretty big. This library is all 'bout open concept! There are several "quiet areas" with table and chairs, perfect place to study. In regards to the "quietness" or level of sound at this location, I'd have to say it's pretty quiet. The only times where there was noise is because every now and then there would be a an annoying ringing sound? Other than that ringing noise, you get the regular side chit chatter, but it's not that bad. Highly recommend this place for studying. read more

We've checked out literally hundreds of children books here. They have a great selection of picture and children books, along with a small assortment of toys that they can play with when you're finding books. Everything is clean and well organized. The library attendants are helpful and ready to assist you. I like the checkout option, where you just stack up to 4 books on a mat and the books are automatically checked out - no more tedious scanning of each book's barcode. The library has great programs for kids, like the summer reading program where kids can earn badges if they read a certain number of books or leave a certain number of reviews. There is plenty of parking, but difficult to access during school opening and closing (e.g., around 3:00/3:30ish when kids get out of school). Although no longer in place, I was very appreciative of the library's approach during covid-19 when you could pre-order books, text a phone number and they would have a bag with your name on it full of your pre-ordered books, ready to go. VERY convenient. Highly recommend this library and it's a great resource for the community. read more

Absolutely horrible experience, one staff lady there is so rude. She asked me to move my seat to somewhere else to sit alone because the tables should apparently only have 4 chairs. Such a ridiculous woman, they should train her again to actually be compassionate and reasonable. She was old and had short gray hair similar to a boy's haircut. And this isn't the first rude encounter with her, she always seems to have an attitude and continues to act like she's special when in reality she is not friendly at all. I don't know why she feels the need to constantly like she rules the library and even tried to act all funny about it. The library is supposed to be a friendly place for kids and teens to study and enjoy books but her actions honestly makes me want to never come back. I cannot believe she works at a place for kids and teens yet acts like she has something against us. I didn't even bother moving to another spot but left the library instead because I refuse to be around such a ill-mannered man child like her. The library is pretty great but they definitely need to screen their staff better. read more

Clean and good number of tables to study. Could have more study desks. I am not sure what purpose it serves but there is a loud ping or ringing noise that goes off in the building a few times per hour. This is a neighborhood children's library so the chatter that wouldn't fly in say Shield's or UCSD biomedical, is just how it is here. Update, I am happy to see staff trying to teach the afternoon daycare students how to have library voice or to redirect the children who are bothering other students who are studying. Hopefully they will eventually see a library as a place to study. Maybe by the time they go to university they won't feel intimidated and not know that it is a good place to do their work. Personally I don't think the public libraries should be a place where teenage students play cards, play computer games or use as a general purpose hang out. But I understand that America has endless wars and the wrong priorities so local schools don't have funding for after school programs. read more

We love to go to our neighborhood library, very nice people always helpful. We take our 7,5,3 years olds for legos on Saturdays, every week we take 15 books to read at home. My children are so happy when they know we will go to the library. read more

ATTENTION PEDOPHILES!! Wow. This library is actually at Franklin High School. Interesting since a lot of schools put fences up and really police the ins and outs of people along with yard duty. I had to visit this branch to find a book for a paper I'm writing and all the kids everywhere-- guh. You could hear their school bell inside and teachers count down for kids to tell them they have so many minutes left every so often. I'd recommend people go when school's not in session. read more

Library that is attached to the Franklin High School and Toby Johnson Middle School. I am not a fan of the libraries attached to schools. It is a pain in the ass when school lets out. The school traffic makes hard it hard to get in and out of the parking lot. And then you have to wade through all the kids hanging out in front. Also the hours are geared for the kids and they close most days at 5 or 6pm. I only use it for returning books. And only on a Saturday or before the kiddies are let out. I usually go to Belle Cooledge since it's just off I-5 and they open late til 8 M-W so it's convenient for on the way home from work. read more

This review is only based on the story time at 10am and stay n play at 10:30a. Today was our first visit to story time at our local library. This place opens at 10am and story time is scheduled at 10. Don't be alarmed by the mass of children and caregivers waiting outside for them to open. The young lady that runs story time is quite charming and great with the toddlers. She did a handful of songs and dances in between reading three books. She's extremely animated and full of energy which helps keep the children's attention. Kudos to her for giving the parents the courteous rules, pretty much if your kid is acting like a wild animal don't just sit there and do nothing, no judgement just be present parents. We stayed for play time after which consists of plastic cars, plush blocks, plastic shape sorting toys and a box of stuffies. I will be back to check out story time again. I hope the same young lady runs it every week. Lastly the room that story time is held in is to the right of the front doors. They close the doors to keep the noise out from the library. Get there early so you can sit of the floor. It does get pretty crowded in there. read more

It's an alright library. The Franklin Community Library is very spacious with an open layout and many places to sit. They have a very large selection of books, with even many movies and books in foreign languages. There are dozens of computers for the public to use, free of charge. The staff are relatively friendly and helpful. However, the library is always busy and is extremely loud. It is a terrible place to go for studying or concentration because there are always children screaming and shouting, but none of the librarians ever ask them to be quiet. I understand that this library is shared by the public high school and middle school, but this is ridiculous, considering that the majority of children being loud are under the age of ten, at the most. The librarians and other staff should do their jobs and try to maintain a peaceful and calm environment. Instead, the atmosphere reflects that of a children's daycare rather than an educational institution. It's a shame too because aside from that, the library would be a very good resource for the public to use. On a side note, for the people who are commenting on the "ringing" every couple hours, those are the middle school and high school bells to let class out. I'm not sure why they still keep those ringing during summer. read more

This is a clean and spacious library. I like to bring my toddlers here to read and enjoy the children's area toys. I try to keep them quiet but not all parents try that hard so I would say make sure you're on the opposite side of the building from the children's area if you're trying to study. The bells for the high school go off regularly if that bothers you try a different library. The staff is always helpful, the security guard is always visible, and the selection of books is pretty good. If you don't find what you're looking for you can always request it and pick it up at your preferred library location. The bathrooms are usually pretty clean. I've found a few cool books in the bookstore for really cheap. Also if you play Pokémon go there is a gym here. read more

Nice and clean library. Too loud to study or focus. Plenty of tables but no outlet plugs. No quiet room or quiet study area. I haven't been to a library in a while and I don't remember the library being so loud and chatty. The last time I was there to study, there were two parents interviewing a potential baby sitter and wow, they were so loud! They could have took their private interview down the street to Starbucks or lower their voices x100! I'm surprised the staff there allow all the loud noises. I know other libraries would have hushed them quickly! Will consider checking out other libraries in the area instead. read more

This library is in the middle of a lower class neighborhood. The library itself is well equipped, but it is always full of disruptive children. The teenagers are the most disrespectful, classless bunch of hoodlums I've come across in a long while. They are loud, rude and curse. They're using our tax money to sit there on Facebook, You Tube and obscene websites. The librarians are loud and do not adopt the concept of a quiet library whatsoever. They talk loudly to one another and do not monitor the obnoxious noise level. If you need a quiet place to study, read or go online, this is not the place to go. If you are an expert in tuning out all the obnoxiousness, then go for it. read more

ALL the librarians are rude. Here are some examples: During my days as a Franklin High school student, I decided to go over to the library to get some work done. There was a sign in front that said, "Library is closed to Franklin students." This was the 5th day that this happened, so I decided to walk in and ask one of librarians why. One of the fat librarians with white hair yells across the room and says, "EXCUSE ME, ARE YOU A STUDENT?" "Yes, I have a question." "Excuse me, I'm not sure what's going through your mind, but why don't you WALK BACK to the FRONT OF THE LIBRARY and READ what that SIGN SAYS." Geez............. One time, I was going on Youtube after school at 3:15 and the librarian taps me on the shoulder and says, "Excuse, are you a Franklin student? Then you can't go on Youtube." "Then how come it's not blocked?" "Well because only the general public can use it. Just not you Franklin students." SO I'M NOT CONSIDERED THE GENERAL PUBLIC?! WHAT AM I, A CAT? I'm just really tired of all the librarians treating you like you're stupid all the time. read more

if you're not a student from the schools, you'd hate it here. the service is prompt and kind, but that doesn't make up for the rowdy kids that totally ruin the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. my bf comes here to study a lot but he HAS to leave before school gets out. or else, he would wade in between students, then have to deal with the school traffic. i like to request books online and pick them up during slow hours. it's a good place to study but you just have to pay attention to peak hours. read more

I happen to be sitting in the library now and thought you all should get a more current review. The library is quiet for the most part. It is shared and deemed the library for both a middle school and a high school (on either side of the library, respectively). It gets a bit noisy from noon to 1:30 (lunch periods) and again at 3 (the children are out of school). HOWEVER, there is a middle space in the library that is deemed the quiet zone. You scoff, I know. Ha! to you. There is a security guard on site, and he is very diligent in keeping the kids segregated to the areas where they can talk quietly if they are working on a project. Yep, he isn't Mister Nice Guy, but yesterday he wasn't around, and a couple of the students had no respect for my space and the concept of quiet. My chair was bumped a few times, and some young man needs his mommy to teach him that when you carry a backpack, your personal space increases by about a foot, extending above your derriere. Meaning, when you turn around, be CAREFUL you do not bump into anyone. Librarians: helpful and very determined to help. One had graciously pointed out the quiet zone and indicated the library was shared with the school. Awesomeness: being able to download up to 10 ebooks on my computer. Why not 5 star? The fiction section is very limited. All in all I am very happy with this library. I will update as needed. :) read more

I'm still laughing at the reviewer who said this is in a lower class neighborhood. Maybe she's from Beverly Hills? Great library. It is shared with a middle and high school and they have a cute kids area with toys so don't expect it to be whisper quiet. Been coming to story time here for years. We miss the old children's librarian Ms. Kati, but Ms. Julia is alright. She overdoes it at times, but the kids like her, and that's the point. I knocked off a star because their kids collection isn't the largest. I find myself always needing to put books on hold, but I don't find myself needing to wait long and pickup is easy. The librarians are very patient with the little ones. I just wish they had a book drop that didn't require a long walk from the car. Not ideal when I have kids in the car. For quick returns, I swing by Elk Grove Library instead. Fun programs for the kids. They have movie night monthly and serve popcorn from a cart. Singalongs, read to a dog, finger painting. This was the loudest library ever that I had ever visited! First there is NO QUIET ZONE where you can sit and study.The kids including their parents are ridiculously LOUD that makes the library as a playzone. I am not sure if the staff are aware that libraries are supposed to be quiet but this place is crazy. I can never recommend this if you are trying to spend a day well to study. read more

I live about 5 miles away and do not have other library choices. I'd say it is quiter to study at starbucks because not only are the middle schoolers and high schoolers loud but the staff are loud too. They talk amongst each other loudly especially this lady, black hair, heavy set. She is so strict with students being loud be she herself is the loudest. I want to go in a get a book, then I come out and get hit on by all these punks for money or drugs. I don't even do drugs! Ewww...I remember this library. I went to Franklin High School and remember going to this library all the time and sharing it with the Toby kids and the public. I swear the librarians and security guards are fascist. After school was out, us students would try to get in but the librarians wouldn't let us unless we had an ID card and would yell at us for every little thing but have no problem letting in little kids and their moms...they favored them over the students. Oh, and my friend Jamie, who graduated from Franklin too, went there to check out some books and our friend Dana sees her blurts out,"Hey Jamie, aren't you supposed to be at CRC?" and one of the security guards overheard it and permanently kicked Jamie out for "trespassing" and threatening to arrest her if she ever comes back. Ridiculous, considering that it's a PUBLIC library and she just graduated from Franklin and wasn't bothering anyone...just getting books. Whatever, the staff at Franklin and Toby are just a bunch of control freaks that like to make irrational rules just for the sake of making them. read more

THis review is only for story time! Ms. Julia is the best story time librarian. She has control of a huge group of parents and kids. Her expressions and songs keeps the kids engaged! My daughter looks forward to going to story time all the time! *side note...most of the librarians are nice but there was one time I was rudely asked to sign in since we were a guest by a library w/o a please or thank you when I told her we already did. read more

This library is very clean and organised. The staff were kind and friendly to me and my toddler. We attended their toddler/baby storytime which are lovely however from observation after storytime most parents leave. Given we recently moved here, we were eager to get library cards and check out their children's section. I searched high and low for toddler board books and to my surprise there was a teeny tiny selection hidden on a shelf. Honestly I have more books at home for my little one and this is meant to be a library?? As an parent and advocate for encouraging little ones to start a life long love for books this library just doesn't cut it for younger toddler readers unfortunately. My little one lost interest very quickly and wanted to leave which is uncharacteristic as he loves books! It actually made me feel quite sad and it really bothered me at how uninspiring the children's section is, there's definitely room for massive improvement and I really hope we see it as it has so much potential to be great! Ps. There is a lot of children's book in Spanish and Chinese for the bilingual families just FYI. read more

This review is based on the Toddler storytime at 10am. The librarian doesn't seem to understand or even like children to be honest... She seems like she's trying to fake it to make it. I don't normally write bad reviews but I've been to a lot of storytimes and never had so many rules placed on my one year old son. Toddlers are told to stay on their parents laps, no sitting in front, no wandering at all, and any "disruptive" children are told to go outside and that they are welcome to just leave. Disruptive is anything that doesn't include sitting quietly in moms lap. My son is 1 and very independent... She called him a wanderer for wanting to get a little closer to see what was going on. She then had the kids come up to put buttons on the board and the second my son finished she started forcefully guiding him away from it even though I was right there trying to navigate through the other kids to grab him myself. I'm not overprotective usually, but this lady grabbed and basically pushed my son when 1. He wasn't in danger 2. I was on my way 3. He wasn't hurting anyone else and 4. I didn't know her. He's also only 16 months give the kid a break! I was overly stressed trying to keep my kid in line at this place. Librarian- if you're reading this, please learn to relax and enjoy being around kids. I'm not asking you to let them on your lap or anything but please loosen up! Let the kids have a good time! read more

This is a great library. I'm not sure that Kerri was at the right place she wrote a review about. It's not in a neighborhood at all..it is situated between a middle and a high school. I love where the library is located. I think it is awesome to see teenagers at a library and while they may not be totally quiet all the time, I have never had a problem with them being disruptive or disrespectful... I think having the library by the school gives many kids a chance they may not ordinarily have to do homework and reading, rather than running around out on the streets. If having the kids there bothers you at all, you can always go when they are not in there during the day or go after school is out. I have found the librarians to be very helpful any time I have had a question or needed any assistance. I tend to check out mysteries and find there are numerous authors and a wealth of books to choose from..if I am looking for a particular book not on the shelves I can order it and have it delivered there in a very short time. I visit this library often and am glad to have it near me. read more
