As of this writing, I am approximately 5-years in the Christian Faith.
I was shopping around for a good church in the area and was referred to Sacred by a fellow Christian friend. That was about a year ago. Since then, I've attended about three Sunday services (I can't attend most of the time due to work), and here are my impressions/observations thus far:
Service takes place in a gymnasium-type room at the Burlingame highschool. Normal chairs are set up in maybe a dozen rows or less, facing the praise and worship band area. The spacing of the room, plus the wonderful welcoming attitudes of the people make for an intimate and immediate atmosphere. Age demographics tend to be in the 20's to probably 40's, with the praise team being on the lower end. There are a few families who attend with children, as well, and the youthful demographics, combined with the general friendliness creates a dynamic, uplifting energy throughout the one hour long service.
This is by no means a "mega" church decked out with ushers, blasting audio speakers, etc and that is a GOOD THING. The vibe at Sacred Church is one of youthfulness, families, and a down-to-earth community. So if you're looking for a fist-pumping rock concert with valet parking, this ain't it. :) At the same time there are no "stiff", conservative airs being puffed around. I would, however, like the attending church goers to be more courageous in sitting closer together and showing more enthusiasm for the praise and worship. But this is a minor gripe and I am a demanding guy.
I've taken my two sons here to the children's group and the leaders have been friendly, communicative, and knowledgeable. I was SO HAPPY this was not one of those places where all they do with your kids is leave them with a bunch of toys and crayons. They actually have bible-related lessons that are taught!
There are some Christian churches whose members tend to "dress up". Most people, including myself, at Sacred get by with casual wear, jeans and buttoned shirts or even tees for the men, and also casual for the women.
Not that it matters, but at the rear of the congregation setup there are some light refreshments and snacks available.
It may be a little easy to miss the driveway entrance at first, but slow down and watch for the sign on the road. Once you drive down the narrow path you will have no problems finding a parking spot.
Communion is not every week, and the service begins with a few praise songs followed by the message by Pastor Josh. Pastor Josh has been wonderful, greeting people at the door and also escorting folks to and from their cars in the parking lot just outside. What a guy. Being a pastor of any size church is no easy thing, so to put in that much effort on even your "not so hot" feeling days says a lot about the shepherd of the church.
It should be pointed out that It should not matter if his messages have been practical, emotional, and with bits of humor injected (which they are). What matters most is if the message is biblically accurate. And thus far, they have been.
If you are the type to attend church to "get something out of it", then you will because of the message, the friendliness of people, the children's class, and the passion stirring praise team.
However, if you are the type to see service as your opportunity to really praise God, encourage others, and assemble with your brothers and sisters in Christ with all your heart, mind and soul, then you will REALLY have a good time. The choice is ultimately yours. Every person is different.
I'd like to write more but I gotta run. I'll update/edit in the near future. Until then I will be attending Sacred Church.
Edit/update, 3.25.16.
With almost all things, you have to leave room for improvement and constructive criticism, and here is mine with Sacred Church.
This is a tough one to answer. Just looking at how good Sacred currently is, I'd have to make some risky demands for change and see where it leads to.
So hear ya go, Pastor Josh and Sacred Church: greater encouragement for people to bring their bibles and do a deeper study of the scriptures. Topical messages are good but sometimes I really want to know the scriptures on a deeper level, complete with Hebrew/Greek translations and the whole nine yards. I'm talkin' some SOLID, clear messages on doctrine!! YES, please oh please oh please...!!! I want to hear about salvation, grace vs works, etc.
This world is perishing way too quickly and believers need to be reminded of the basic truths in these times.
Secondly, it would be nice to have an extra praise song or two in there. The service goes by so fast that---and I may be deceiving myself---I start to wonder if the praise is too short and the sermon message is too "light'. But there is also the possibility that it flies by so quickly because it is already so much fun to learn, praise, and pray with the current setup. Hmmm. I'd have to reflect on this one. read more
