The church almost always has an adult Sunday school happening at 9:00am before the 10:30am service where you get the opportunity to dive into the Bible together in discussion and fellowship. During this crazy COVID19 time, the church is still meeting in-person (or online if you prefer) but observes social distancing and mask wearing to protect our kupuna and at-risk individuals. He's humble and down-to-earth. It's easy to understand his homilies - which is important for me. I had met him in person as I went to a class at St. Ann's with my co-worker, called "Catholics Returning Home". We both learned a lot. I never went to Sunday School because my elementary and high schools were Catholic. Recently, I had an emergency & I needed a place to go have a good cry. It was not during regular church hours, but I tried the door of the chapel... it was open! I spent a few minutes by myself in the presence of the Lord, reflecting on the meaning of life and pondered the mystery of death and why my friend, Lucille, was taken from this earth in such a strange fashion. I was able to compose myself and write a few lines in the Book of Special Intentions near the door of the chapel. I felt at peace and that my prayers would be answered... Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May Lucille's soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!

St. Ann's is a perfect example. Granted Fr. Herman is awesome, but I think it's because he is a true local guy. He went to Damien for high school! Not to say that priests from outside the state aren't great, but being effective at connecting with the local people is a great help. That's one of the main reasons why I give this place 5 stars. St. Ann's is a newer built church so it has the ac and projector screens etc. I do find the ac on the cooler side, so I try to have sleeves or a sweater on. This makes me think of the churches in Italy where it's required to have your shoulders covered when you enter. Parking in the lot is adequate, but be prepared to wait to exit after Mass. If you need to be somewhere in a hurry, park on haikū road, but careful crossing the street if you're on the mall side.

Retreat in Honolulu, Hawaii…read more.. I heard about this weekend retreat from my Wednesday night Bible class. I looked up "BCC" (Basic Christian Community) online, found it, signed up, and paid through Eventbright. Easy! BCC emailed instructions and reminders! I was curious! I didn't know anything and hadn't really spoken to anyone about the BCC retreats. There was a list of what to bring (umbrella, flashlight, towel, pillow, toiletries, etc.). Val, from my Wednesday night group, suggested that I bring a sleeping bag. I found the St. Anthony's Retreat Center with GPS. I drove slowly and saw the entrance on the right side of Kalihi Street. I stopped at the sign where participants could drop off their car key, have the valet park their car, and someone would help with bringing luggage to the assigned room. The buildings were old-school cool. This place used to be an orphanage in 1909. It was run by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary until Hawaii became the 50th State and Foster Care looked after orphans. In 1974, Sister Gertrude changed St. Anthony Home into St. Anthony Retreat Center. It was renovated and expanded in 1999 to 2008. Our group used the dorms (which had running water, beds, and showers with hot water), dining room and chapel downstairs, and the meeting hall in the building next door, which had 4 restrooms. The grounds were very beautiful with white statues of an angel, Jesus, and St. Christopher. I found the grotto with Mary, but I didn't find the outdoor Stations of the Cross. I'll have to go exploring in the future!

The facilities are divided into the Historic Halls (original Kalihi Orphanage), Historic Circle Heritage Centers. Each hall has its own parking lot and is separate form each other which affords private and quiet to groups who may be having concurrent events. These facilities are located deep in Kalihi Valley with surrounding plant life that looks like you're in an Old Hawai'i tropical forest and you can even hear or see the Kalihi Stream running through the property. We've had the pleasure of attending birthday celebrations for my husband's aunt and family reunion dinners at this lush and secluded Catholic ministry retreat. Over the past 6 years, we've been here 3 times and only ONCE have we experienced clear blue skies. Perhaps we're receiving a Blessing from the Heavens but, our experiences here have been nothing less than stellar. Anyway, we've been fortunate that our family has gotten reservations at the Mother Alexandrine Hall which has a capacity for 77 people and a kitchenette. This dining hall is air-conditioned, well-kept and ensures private and quietness to retreat groups or celebrations. Parking for attendees or deliveries is convenient to each hall. We hope that we'll be able to return for more family reunions and to celebrate a few more birthdays for my husband's aunt.

Now, my home parish after weeks of trying different Catholic Churches. Here's why:…read more 1) Franciscan spirituality: a true holy man resides here as our beloved pastor. He is a Capuchin Franciscan who is the model priest. Firm and no nonsense (which I love) but with the compassion and kindness of Christ. Franciscans celebrate the presence of God in all of His creations: animals, plants, sun, moon, stars... yes even rainbows! Father's homilies might run a tad long, but they are jam packed with rich poignant truth-based concepts grounded in natural law and Christian "bedrock". I wouldn't wish one word less...every word of his helps me defuse the confusion of Christianity and I always come away enlightened. 2) adherence to the truth: so many times we gravitate to that which we want to hear versus what we need to hear. How many times do we "google" a topic but only chose to read the posts we happen to agree with, while dismissing the rest, regardless if they are more truthful than our previously adopted biases? That's not helping us to fully use the gifts of logic and reason God gave us. What personal growth is there in only listening to our own self centered egos and only those thoughts that seem to validate our conceits? In a world full of anger and shouting and hate and political correctness, and euphemism....it's nice to hear the unvarnished truth. I welcome truth the same way a poor, naked man welcomes warm clothes in the middle of a blizzard. 3) Aloha: I'm aware that this word may not mean today what it meant years ago, but in general (aside from the occasional curmudgeon like myself), the people here are warm, friendly, and try their best to imitate Christ. Do we fail? You bet. Several times a day... but we are called to "press on til the end"... and so we try. Most everyone here radiates Aloha. 4) Keeps traditions alive: while we all need to do a better job liturgically in some areas of tradition (as spelled out clearly in Sacrosanctum Concillium), we are one of the few churches that celebrates one Sunday Mass each month in the Hawaiian language. Come join us the third Sunday of the month to experience this. It is both amazing and inspirational. 5) History and Architecture: we are one of the few churches on island that did not jump on the 70s/80s/90s bandwagon of architecture revolution and renovate to a circular design (which is actually paganesque and not Christian). Our architecture reflects centuries of Catholic imagery... we have a proper Nave, Sanctuary, Altar and Tabernacle that is the central focus of our liturgy since everything visually in our architecture points to Christ as the center of our worship, and the presence of Christ in our midst. Our church was first established in 1840 as a result of the then persecution that drove the move of the faithful from Honolulu to the Windward side. Saint Father Damien of Molokai visited and said Mass here! The original wooden church structure burned down in a fire back in 1937. By 1939, a new block constructed church was built (which is the current one today). Our bell in our tower was a gift from the kind people of Nantes, France, and has a dedication and year marking on the bell that shows it was cast in 1845! There is something about the sanctity and feel of a church where so many generations of Hawaiians have worshipped in and prayed. It gives the church, a peaceful holy feel. If you are looking for a place to worship, you might like this parish. In any case, peace and goodness to you all... or in the words of St Francis d'Assisi: "Pax et Bonum ". I sometimes help with the piano and organ performances at weddings, so I think there are many opportunities to go to church. I have performed in various types of churches, but this church, which is simple in appearance, is by no means glamorous, but it was a dignified and quaint building with a sense of history. The very spacious interior of the church has a high ceiling, and I naturally felt a sense of positive "qi". After all, is the power flowing throughout this land flowing everywhere? On the same premises as the church, there was a nursery school or a room that looked like a kindergarten, and small children were sitting in a circle listening to the teacher's story. I couldn't help but smile. The lush green promenade, and the backyard behind the church that extends all the way to the stream, creates a very beautiful landscape. Are there homes nearby? It's quiet, but I can also feel the signs of people. In other words, this church can be said to be a church rooted in the local area that has a deep relationship with the residents. According to the wedding agent, it is common for parents, and then the second generation, to hold their weddings here. The wedding agent said that the number of wedding applicants from Japan has gradually increased. A wedding ceremony at a church located in Hawaii's famous power spot will make the biggest event of your life the best. In addition to weddings, I think it's a good idea to test yourself to find out how much healing energy you can actually feel in this church. It is a wonderful local church that is integrated with the nature of Hawaii. 数多くのパワースポットとして有名なNuuanu。そしてこのチャーチはPali Hwy沿いにひっそりと佇んでいます。何度もその横を往復しているにも関わらず、私は今回初めてこのチャーチの存在を知りました。 私は時々結婚式のピアノやオルガン演奏のお手伝いをして居ますので、教会に行く機会は多いと思います。 色々なタイプの教会で演奏して来ましたが、外見もシンプルなこのチャーチは決して華やかでは無いけれど歴史を感じる重厚で趣のある建造物でした。 チャーチ内部は天井が高くとても広々としており自然にポジティブな「気」を感じました。やはりこの土地全体に流れるパワーが至る所に流れているのでしょうか？教会の同じ敷地内には保育園、もしくは幼稚園らしき部屋があり小さな子供がエンジンを組んで先生の話に聞き入って居ました。思わず微笑みがこぼれました。裏庭と続いている様な青々として遊歩道はNuuanu streamと繋がりとても美しい景観を作り出して居ます。付近には住居もあるのでしょうか？静かですが人の気配も感じます。つまりこの教会は住民と深い関わりのある地元に根付いた教会と言えそうです。ウェディングエージェントスタッフがこの協会で父母の結婚式を行い、次にその2世が結婚式をここで挙げる事も多いそうです。今は日本からの挙式希望者も徐々に増えたと仰っていました。ハワイの有名なパワースポットに位置する教会での挙式は人生最大のイベントを最高の物にしてくれる事でしょう。結婚式以外にもこの教会で実際にどれほどのヒーリングエナジーを感じる事が出来るかを、一度ご自身で試されてみると良いと思います。自然と一体になった素晴らしいチャーチです。
