Salem Moravian Graveyard - "God's Acre"

On an overcast and slightly drizzly Saturday morning, wandering into God's Acre felt like stepping…read moreinto a place that has been quietly holding its breath for centuries. The Moravian tradition of uniform, flat headstones gives the entire cemetery a sense of calm order, almost like the landscape itself is part of the congregation. It was easy to park and slip inside respectfully, and once you're in, the stillness settles around you in a way that makes even a quick visit feel intentional. Among the many resting here is Bishop August Gottlieb Spangelberg, a foundational figure in establishing the Moravian Church in America, whose presence adds a layer of historical gravity to the peaceful grounds. A short walk away, Salem Cemetery offers a different but equally meaningful atmosphere, with more varied monuments and a broader sweep of Winston-Salem's civic and cultural history represented in its burials. The paths wind gently through mature trees and family plots, and it's the kind of place to slow down without noticing you've done so. Notable figures here include R.J. Reynolds, whose tobacco empire shaped the city's identity, and his wife Katherine Smith Reynolds, known for her philanthropy and the creation of Reynolda House. Together, God's Acre and Salem Cemetery make for a reflective and worthwhile stop, especially on a gray Saturday morning when the quiet feels like part of the experience. My husband thought it was…read more"slightly" odd that I was going to review a funeral home BUT hopefully I can provide some sort of peace of mind to someone during this super sad time. Unfortunately, my amazing mom passed away last week. My dad chose Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home to take care of her arrangements. The funeral home itself is large with plenty of space for loved ones to gather yet the area for the actual service seemed on the smaller side. If the departed has extensive family, friends, etc. I honestly don't know if the chapel area would be large enough. All the staff were simply wonderful. The funeral director was so friendly and always making sure we were ok or asking if we needed anything. My dad said the price was super reasonable too. I'm not listing how much but he said it was really fair for all that he got. So if you are in the need for funeral arrangements, this funeral home would be a great choice.
