The Moravian tradition of uniform, flat headstones gives the entire cemetery a sense of calm order, almost like the landscape itself is part of the congregation. It was easy to park and slip inside respectfully, and once you're in, the stillness settles around you in a way that makes even a quick visit feel intentional. Among the many resting here is Bishop August Gottlieb Spangelberg, a foundational figure in establishing the Moravian Church in America, whose presence adds a layer of historical gravity to the peaceful grounds. A short walk away, Salem Cemetery offers a different but equally meaningful atmosphere, with more varied monuments and a broader sweep of Winston-Salem's civic and cultural history represented in its burials. The paths wind gently through mature trees and family plots, and it's the kind of place to slow down without noticing you've done so. Notable figures here include R.J. Reynolds, whose tobacco empire shaped the city's identity, and his wife Katherine Smith Reynolds, known for her philanthropy and the creation of Reynolda House. Together, God's Acre and Salem Cemetery make for a reflective and worthwhile stop, especially on a gray Saturday morning when the quiet feels like part of the experience.
