Most of the courses offered at The University of South Australia, University of Adelaide, Flinders University of South Australia, TAFE SA and Charles Darwin University require the applicant to submit through SATAC. If you don't possess the typical secondary qualifications for admission to a tertiary institution you may be required to sit a STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test) prior to making an application. SATAC conducts these tests to assess the relevant skills and knowledge of an applicant. The STAT results can then be used in place of a TER (tertiary entrance rank score) or equivalent.

I, like everyone else in SA, applied through SATAC to get into my uni course, and my own experience was pretty positive except for one major thing. Yes I have a gripe! While I found SATAC staff to be really lovely and professional and friendly, even in the midst of the busiest time ever, when every secondary student and adult student is applying for a course. They're friendly under pressure and helpful. Lines can get a but long in the lunch break time during admissions time, but otherwise the centre itself is quite central and a-ok. My gripe: the website. Like most government websites, it's a bit all over the shop. The info is probably there, but it's SUPER hard to find. There's no search button! Who doesn't have a search button? I was overseas when I was applying and needed to find info without being able to call in on the phone conveniently, and it was next to impossible, sadly. You definitely need someone in person/ over the phone to help you out here. Edit the website, add a SEARCH BUTTON, and you will be at least 1 star better, SATAC!

I first came across this place while I was looking for a teacher to help me and my wife learn to waltz and come up with some basic choreography in preparation for our first dance during our wedding which was happening in less than a month! Yeah, I know. Very last minute, but oh well, we managed to pull off the first dance pretty ok with only 2 weeks of practice and I have to say it is due to the clear guidance of Mr James Stout who is the head instructor of this studio. I've been to quite a few dance teachers and James is the only one who has been able to break the concepts down for me in a way that I can understand and start to apply clearly. For example, I used to always have a problem with leading in dancing. I still do, but with James's instruction I was able to understand it well enough that I'm actually able to work on it and improve it. Also, unlike alot of dance instructors I've come across, James feels very down to earth with that neighbourly sort of feel, and doesn't use big technical terms to teach newbies which makes beginners like me feel more comfortable. That said, there is no question of his ability and I was spellbound by how effortlessly he executed moves and techniques which for me took a great deal of mental and sometimes physical strain. For me, the state of the instructor is a reflection of the studio they run, and from what I can observe from the instructor, this studio really knows how to teach, they know their stuff, they're pretty relaxed but know how to guide you to become a good and even great dancer if you so choose. I have nothing but praise for this studio, and if I ever decide to take up dancing seriously in future, this is where I'm heading.

The Adelaide College of the Arts is many things to many people. It houses a couple of theatres that…read moreare used as schoolrooms to teach technical production to students as well as provide acting students an opportunity to perform in a state of the art venue; it also provides this experience to the dance students who get a degree in dance at the college. The theatres are also for hire at different times of the year, particularly during the Adelaide Fringe Festival and that's when any number of theatre companies may be appearing in public seasons of plays, stand up comedy or dance. The facility houses galleries where exhibitions are constantly featuring work by graduates of the variety of courses on offer at the school including print making, jewellery and sculpture. Most often the work is available for sale. The large foyer area hosts small scale exhibitions of work related to student productions and there are many opportunities to purchase work by students and view productions by students. One of the best things for the public is the cafe housed in the foyer where you can get a coffee or other beverage, a muffin, a wrap or toasted sandwich and sit at one of the indoor or outdoor tables and relax for a while watching the creative types come and go. Outside there is a small but rather beautiful cactus garden bed, and inside on the last Tuesday of each month a poetry reading is held free of charge between 1 - 2 PM, so there is often something to listen to as well as watch. Music usually plays in the foyer area as well. AC Arts is transitioning into an independent business and encourages the public to use the cafe facilities and attend the exhibitions and poetry readings on site. Always an interesting place to meet for a drink in the city and who knows, you may just bump into the next Picasso, Cate Blanchett or Judy Davis!

Tonight was a graduate exhibition and I love those as there are always proud parents and other supporters of the emerging artists there, which creates some sentimental moments if you're people watching! Penny Griggs, SALA CEO gave a warm and wonderful speech. One tip is to collect the booklet as well as the listing of works. In the booklet all the artists are featured, which makes a great reference for following the up and comers as they grow and develop and exhibit in future shows.

Adelaide Central School of Art has such a brilliant reputation…read more I am due to be a student there this year, and it is only due to their flexibility, helpfulness and access to FEE-HELP (Hecs) that I am able to follow one of my primary passions - visual art. I have tried to study at UniSA twice, but their inflexible study times and minimum workload requirements made it impossible. However, I decided that I really needed to have some direction in art and I've always wanted professional mentoring in traditional mediums including drawing and oil painting. ACSA provides that and even when I asked tentatively if they had any places left for the 2012 Bachelor course, they accepted me (Supposed to have applied in November 2011). The Receptionist was incredibly lovely, helpful and passionate about art and we talked about it for ages. This is one of the only places that do night time classes and on the 6th of Feb, I'll be starting 7pm classes in drawing and oils. This place is a safe haven for the artistically inclined.

The gallery is well respected in the South Australian contemporary art scene and shows the work of local and national artists throughout the year as well as hosting graduate exhibitions and group shows of emerging artists. Until recently, the gallery was hosting an exhibition entitled "Flourish" featuring the work of Central's instructors and former students. The next show on the calendar entitled "Emergence" will display the work of this years graduates. Although I have only seen a few examples of the work to be on show, it appears that there is certainly some talent this year and it will be well worth checking out. As well as offering full length degree programmes, Central also offers a number of short courses and hosts interesting workshops from time to time. Prior to commencing my studies there, I took the painting short course which proved very useful in developing basic painting skills. The workshops are often directed at specific areas, and are often suited to more the experienced, whereas the short courses are often suited to begginers. The full length of study at Central can prove to be very expensive, although, Central's recent affiliation with Flinders University has now made HELP Loans available with respect to study fees.

They do not specialise in any particular field, but prefer to be strong across a wide range of the curriculum. Their facilities are second to none boasting an indoor swimming pool with three indoor sports courts and full tennis facilities. For those in the arts there is a dance studio and a theatre and a reputable music program. They have language program in German and Japanese and have sister schools in both countries, which allows students to complete some of their studies over there in a student exchange. Great reputation for academic success with the majority of students achieving high level employment opportunities.

The school is structured differently from all public and private schools, it is like a bridge between school and university. You are given a lot more freedom, but the academic level is still extremely high. How school works is you have two 2-hour classes for each subject. Your hours vary depending what subjects you do, but the day starts at 8am and finishes at 5pm. You refer to the teachers by their first name, which enables you to be on a more equal level with them, it is less like a dictatorship. They are very helpful and often in their office able to help you with any questions or problems. All the teachers say, if you do the work they ask, you will do well. This is very true, the lessons and homework they give is exactly what you need to do well in every subject. There are no extra curricular subjects available at Eynesbury. You can't play sport, however, there are so many clubs around Adelaide that if you do want to play a sport it is easy to do so. I loved the location of Eynesbury. It is just off Victoria Square and they now have a new campus off Gouger Street. You can sit in the Square on breaks and you are right near the markets. Think of the food you can get for lunch, no more over-priced un-tasty cafeteria food. The city also makes it very convenient to catch public transport to and from school.

I found the level of education and support provided by the teaching staff excellent. It was a highly supportive and nurturing environment, particularly for academically strong students. The expectations and standards are high for students. The freedom of dress, calling teachers by their first name and flexibility afforded by free periods was an excellent preperation for university. I do, however think this style is more effective for final year students and those independantly motivated. I am glad I didn't go to Eynesbury in year 10 & 11, as I believe my rebellious streak would have flourished a little more freely than in the traditional school system. I also enjoyed PE in my younger schooling and it would have been detrimental to my health and wellbeing to opt out of it at an earlier age. As Sam said, the subjects offered were all core academic subjects and the majority of SACE subjects offered were PES.
