Last year, after my older daughter turned 16, I called several driving schools and actually the only ones who reliably answered their phone was Safety First. Asking around, I heard some others from Princeton who used them, so we went ahead and booked with them. My daughter had the same instructor for all three of her lessons. He was always on time and everything went fine. All lessons were scheduled within a 5 or 6 day window at the end of July (about a week after I called them initially). When we called back to schedule someone in April to take her for her road test on her 17th birthday, her prior instructor was no longer with them due to illness. Someone else took her and she did fine - she passed and he'd given her the added tip of getting the QLess app so that by the time she passed the road test, she was 10th on the 'line' in the dmv building - she would have been 56th! So she was dropped back at school that day with her license in hand, on her 17th birthday. Only drawback was that they did sometimes pick up or drop off another student at the end or beginning of a lesson. There was another woman with them on the day of the test as well - also taking her test. Additionally, the lessons were cut a little shorter than the 2 hours, but driving is exhausting when you are first learning, so neither my daughter nor I really had any complaints about that. Was driving today on Amwell Rd in Somerset and was rudely cutoff by an instructor around 3:20pm. Extremely reckless speeding, whipping in and out of lanes and almost clipped my mirror. I got flipped off after honking at him. This person should not be teaching anybody driving, and I certainly wouldn't trust this person behind the wheel, especially with my teen. read more

Our experience for my oldest daughter was entirely unsatisfactory. While the individual instructors were polite and punctual, the cars are dilapidated and borderline unsafe and the main office is disorganized and at times rude. Multiple delays in getting the paperwork filed properly which necessitated multiple return trips to the office after not setting proper expectations and poor attitude when taken to task for their disorganization. I had Day as my instructor and she was absolutely amazing. The car itself was easy to drive and work with. I did not have any problems at all. The instructor was extremely sweet, warm, caring, energetic, and a very good teacher. She made sure you knew everything and taught well. My daughter went to school in Manhattan and missed the high school pressure to learn to drive. She was resistant and afraid. Her instructor was very patient and encouraging. He made the whole experience easy, was always reliable and pleasant and the cost was reasonable. I originally scheduled a few classes and they went well. I paid for 2 additional classes and was provided a contract and the contract saids that as long as I cancel 48 hours before the class , I can get a refund. My additional classes were scheduled for December, I cancelled in November and the receptionist and manager gave me the run around until December and then claimed I cancelled same day to avoid giving me a refund. DO NOT go to this school. I would not recommend and You should find a different school. read more

Beware. My daughter used them for drivers er, and they were average. Instructor had her stop at his storage unit to get something...creepy. We also used them for the hour before the test refresher. Do not do this. They charge you 190.00 bucks for the one hour, which is ok, but they double your kid up with another kid, so your lucky if your child get 30 mins behind the wheel. Horrible experience for me. My instructor Frank was terrible, and verbally assaulted me multiple times when I accidentally did something wrong while driving. (Which is fine correct me all you want, don't scream at me like I almost killed someone.) I also felt he was pretty sexist, for example he'd yell at me for doing something minor while the boy after me would cut people off switching lanes and Frank wouldn't say anything. He ended up playing loud music the whole time which is pretty distracting for a driver who has to focus on driving and trying to avoid mistakes. Something else that others have complained about here, is the picking up of other kids during your lesson. Thankfully we got all the hours we paid for, but it was annoying that after my 2 hour sessions I'd be 20-30 minutes away from home picking up another kid. The Prius isn't the best car IMO for driving for the first time either. It was very quiet and I often wouldn't trust the speedometer because I couldn't hear or feel how fast I was going. read more

Had an absolutely terrible experience with this company. The instructor Bandula was rude on the phone and after a miscommunication hung up on me. When I tried to explain what happened he hung up on me again. My son had a horrible lesson with him and when I talked to him about it he was more interested in citing his yelp reviews and bashing the school where my son took drivers ed. He accused his teacher of not being certified. He lied several times in our conversation. A supervisor called me and was extremely rude and condescending and continued to back his instructor even after admitting he lied. He talked over me constantly and it was truly the most horrible customer service experience I've ever had in my life. He did call me back later to apologize and try to make it right but it was too little too late after the amount of disrespect shown. I already booked lessons for my son elsewhere. read more

Did my driving test today with the safety first car (I failed). I was under the impression that I was to get a 2 hour session before the test, and I paid a full $190 (money given to me by my mother). When I called them to make the appointment they said that I'd be getting a 2 hour practice, but then my instructor only did less than one hour (maybe like 45 minutes?) And had me drive to my testing area (No complaint about that part). But what had me really ticked off is that when my parents called the office regarding how I only got 45 minute practice when they thought they paid for the 2 hour practice before the test, the person just laughed it off saying 'whatever', and how it was actually $180. Then my parents called again for more clarification (as stated above we paid 190) but once again they laughed at my parents, saying 'whatever'. My parents don't speak English very well, so they were talking on the phone with their broken english. I think there was a line of racism there too. Regarding the quality of the instructions, they weren't too bad. When I first started off I already had the bare basics, so it was mostly the big road driving (did some parking practices as well, and the k-turn). I was terrible with parallel parking but it's all better now (could've also done it with other driving school and some other cars but oh well). But then the instructor would stop randomly to pick up some food, and not come back for like 20 minutes (a bit of exaggeration there). The major downfall of this is that on my first time with this driving school, at the end of the first session we had to go pick up a girl. Needless to say, it was her very first time behind the wheel, and she was the one who was responsible for my ride home! For crying out loud I never felt so much fear in my life. read more

Do NOT use this company. My instructor Frank verbally harassed me via text message, there was another student in the car who was apparently my responsibility to drive home, made fun of my height and age, and my teacher pulled over into a parking lot and urinated in the bushes on the edge of the parking lot during the lesson. When I called to complain about him and receive a different instructor, the owner said to me "he's just an old school Italian guy, you gotta understand". When I explained that I would be happy to have my previous instructor, Dave whom I felt very comfortable with, for the remainder of my lessons, the owner dismissed me, told me to find another driving school, and hung up on me. I intend on reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. I find it difficult to believe this is an isolated incident and this type of behavior should not be tolerated. read more

I used Safety First for a refresher lesson before my road test and Frank was great! He showed up 15 minutes early and taught me everything that I needed to know to be prepared for my road test and helped me gain confidence. The safety first car also makes parallel parking-the part I was most nervous about- super easy! A week later, I took my road test and passed with flying colors. I unfortunately need to give this company two stars. My lessons were mostly good and I have no complaints about the actual instructor or lessons. My issue is I called 5 weeks in advance to schedule a road test. At the time based on the date of my test, they were unsure if they would have an available instructor to take me. They scheduled my appointment and said if there were any problems they would get back to me so I could make other arrangements. It's 5 days before my test and I had to reach out to them to confirm my appointment only to be told they couldn't do it now. So I'm left scrambling trying to find a replacement when I could have scheduled with someone else weeks ago. It's very unprofessional. If you can take your test in the summer, they're great. Any other time of the year, find someone else. read more

Honestly, I didn't have a great experience calling any of the popular driving schools, but at least in this case I can't say enough about Mike. This is absolutely one of the worst driving schools I have ever been to. My instructor Frank was extremely loud and screamed in my ear. He gave me wrong directions to the driving school and whipped my steering wheel in the middle of an inter section. He also made me really uncomfortable by touching my hands while I was driving. Also, while we were practicing k-turns and parallel parking he would scream and me and I was on the verge of tears. He made me so nervous (more than I already was) for my test. He gave me 0 confidence and continued to repeat "dont lose your focus". What the hell else am I focusing on then? He also would play very loud music while I was driving and continued to make weird comments. I have read some of the other comments here and it seems Frank comes up a lot. He is so unprofessional and to be frank? A dick. Now if anyone from this school makes a snarky reply like the ones above do NOT think I wont come to your driving school and having a word with either the business owner or just bring my family to make sure this place gets shut DOWN IMMEDIATELY. Told me my daughter would have a two hour lesson from 7-9PM. Driver showed up at 7:30 dropped off at 8:30. Charged for the 2 hour price I was initially quoted. Called to discuss/clarify,no one will return my call. Leads me to believe it's a shady operation. read more

While driving my kids to school today one of the instructors for this school, while driving car #25, nearly hit my car twice while trying to pass me on the right shoulder. I then witnessed him making an illegal right turn at a red light without stopping, or even slowing down much. I can't imagine that someone so careless with the lives of the other drivers on the road will impart the driving behaviors that most parents want for their soon to be drivers. Maybe a public shaming will make this irresponsible person change his driving habits. read more

The lessons - I like my teacher, Sandy, a lot. I have no beef with her, she is great. I always wanted to drive since I was a kid, but growing up with ADHD and high functioning autism. I finally passed my written test. I was so happy. Called, got a few days driving practice - went fine, nothing wrong there. Then the day of the road test - Prior to that test, I am on SSI and work very little hours at a steak house to get the $200 needed for the test, and somehow I get the money. On September 23rd, we go to the test. I am driving, but no one told me we were picking up someone else to go and review parallel parking. Now, I am already super nervous about this, and this extra person made it worse because I did not know this person was going to be there. During the test, I didn't notice my seat was adjusted too low. I hit a curb and failed. I was freaking out and did not want to go the DMV to see this other person get their license, so I catch the bus home - screw that! I call the next day and get another date - October 14th. A family emergency happened with my instructor - OK, cool, no problem, and she's going to retire for personal reasons. So, this week I am working extra hard to get the money and to find out on the day I am slotted with the same problem. I am not going to pay and they said wait till February or January. I could, but I feel like I am slotted in with this guy I failed because my anxiety being autistic was high I been practicing driving for while fine. I wish Sandy nothing but the best in what she will do next, but I am sad this journey ended this way. This school employs unprofessional instructors. Please do not entrust your children to them. My child's instructor was texting for the entire duration of the lesson, modeling inappropriate driver behavior. Even worse, he was texting about my child. Learning to drive safely is too important.
