I give Sage motel a lot of credit for being the only place in Newcastle that was able to provide last minute availability. Without the Sage motel, I would have been forced to sleep in my car for the evening in an area that I'm completely unfamiliar with. And the price couldn't be beat! The cons: No pets allowed. I'm here writing this review to share in my experience and how I came upon the Sage Motel in Newcastle, Wyoming. I had just spent a fun filled day exploring incredible and extraordinary Devils Tower National Monument and was heading on the next step of my journey to the Black Hills of Custer, South Dakota. I figured before getting to the great sights of the Black Hills, I'd spend the evening in Newcastle and that's how I found the Sage Motel. From Devils Tower, It's only 75 miles to get here. Then from Newcastle it's a quick 37 miles to Wind Cave National Park, my upcoming destination to visit the following day. The motel is pretty simple...they have an "L" shaped row of rooms at reasonable rates. I visited in July in the height of travel season and it was $85 with tax for the evening. I ended up with a room at the end of the strip. Each room has their own parking spot. Although I was a little suspect about the outside looking conditions of the motel, I was pleasantly surprised about how nice and new my room looked on the inside. I had 2 comfortable queen beds with brand new looking carpeting, a couple of lounge chairs, spotless white looking bathroom with plenty of towels and a sliding door shower. I was highly impressed with the conditions of my room that I started feeling a comfort as if I were staying in my own quaint little condo. Sage Motel is situated just on the outer portion of Newcastle. When I checked in, it was recommended that I drive 5 minutes into the center of town and have dinner at Isabella's...a cozy little Italian American restaurant that I absolutely enjoyed. This was a great way to end my wonderful day of finally witnessing grandeur Devils Tower and then coming here to Newcastle and appreciating a homestyle meal. In my opinion, Newcastle, Wyoming gets labeled as a town that most travelers just pass on through. Though it should not go unrecognized..... If you're heading east towards South Dakota and the magnificent sights of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park and more or you're journeying north towards Devils Tower.... you can always spend an evening and appreciate small town vibes with a clean and comfortable stay here at the Sage Motel. read more

Excellent motel! Beautiful exterior, decorated very nicely. The rooms are decorated nicely too. Very kind owner who takes a lot of pride in the motel. It shows! The bed was THE MOST COMFORTABLE bed I have ever slept in. I want to get the same mattress for my home. Fantastic tub! Very deep and comfortable. Hot water Many selections for TV watching. I had to stay in New Castle, Wyoming for employment reasons, we had previously stayed at another motel and were unhappy with the service, Chloe and her husband, are extremely outgoing and willing to help with anything you may need. I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel if you find yourself in need of a hotel, The Sage is the place to be. Friendly staff, clean rooms, good water pressure and nice patios to enjoy the mild weather. I was here for a night,passing through on my way to Mt Rushmore and my car wouldn't start when it was time to leave. After getting towed and arranging repairs, I called them to see if I could stay another night while I waited for parts. No problem. They still had my same room and booked me right back in. We were in town for my father-in-law's funeral, and there aren't a lot of choices in Newcastle for hotel/motels. Based on the number of good reviews online, we chose Sage Motel. When we arrived, the place was already not the way it looked online. There was a 5 foot table with junk on it and a bunch of dirty shovels and things right in front of the window of the room we were assigned - the only room available of the 12 they have. Inside the room, the bedding and the TV were new, but pretty much everything else was very dated in the room. The door had no way to lock it from the inside that could not be opened from the outside (no security slide, chain or deadbolt) - anyone with a key could walk into the room at any time. The hair dryer in the bathroom did not work, with or without the bathroom light on, we assumed the GFI was messed up, but we couldn't make it work and gave up. The wall A/C was ancient and extremely noisy through the night. Morning came early with shouting, laughing, banging, car door slamming, etc right outside our window at about 6-7am that seemed to go on forever. This was not a small ruckus, and was the last straw. We decided to check out one day early due to the unacceptable room issues. I went to the front desk and explained the issues (junk by room, noisy AC, unsecure door, dead hair dryer, loud group early am). The girl at the desk offered no solution for the hair dryer and acted like it was the first time she'd heard of it. For the noise, she said "oh, those are paleontologists that come here every year" and agreed that they were loud and rowdy. So, they KNEW this was the behavior, and they didn't try to quiet them or warn guests checking in that they would be disturbed early every morning. Unacceptable. She said she would have her boss handle the refund and we left to check into the Fountain Inn, which turned out to be MUCH BETTER and less than fifteen bucks more. So after a week and no credit when we got home, I called again. Got the same girl at the desk. She said she would have her boss call and she already had all the information. The next day he did call and left a message, and I called him back. It did not go well. His position was that since we had signed a 24 hour cancellation agreement, there were no refunds, even if the service he provided at his motel was not close to acceptable. He said the hair dryer did work if you turned on the light. I'm still pretty sure we did this (and it didn't help), but I asked if that was the solution, why did his desk girl not tell us that when we mentioned the problem? Why is he "training" me and not his staff? He accused me of being rude to his office girl when I checked out (I was not) and said he had audio and video of me being rude from the office camera. I asked to see that because there's no way that's on tape because it didn't happen. What he HAS on tape is me running down the problems with the room and reasons why we were leaving early. That's it. My goal was just to get a room my wife could rest up in before her dad's funeral. The Sage Motel was NOT it. He refused the refund and we're now doing a credit card chargeback as well as warning everyone about this place and its terrible, unprofessional management. After a little investigation, I discovered that the reason we saw so many 5 star reviews was that the owners and friends were leaving fake 5 star reviews. I know this because I matched the name of the LLC registrant and the owner and some of their friends to reviews they were dumb enough to leave their real names on. Take those fake 5 star reviews out, and this place would end up at the 1-2 stars places like AAA, who do on-site inspections, have given it. After the experience with the owner/LLC registrant (I'm not putting his name in this, but look it up) who could not take ownership for any of his motels problems, I would NEVER in a million years recommend this place to anyone. We selected the hotel based on the reviews and we expected it to be quaint and quiet but were super impressed by the Kohler fixtures and luxury towels. Hope we can get back there some day! read more

Nice place to stay for the area. Beds were soft and comfy, rooms very clean and fresh. The breakfast in the morning was good fresh hot coffee with a few other things. Such a wonderful stay, thank you so much to the Sage Motel. We came to town under bad circumstance, the Sage was an ideal stay. The beds were big and comfortable, the front desk girl was very friendly and answered all my questions. (I'm a mother so I always have many.) Very clean and such big rooms. Wifi, works, great, as well as the Tv, and the coffee was wonderful. SO Clean. We will be back next year 10 out of 10! read more
