You can stay in the keeper's house at a privately run decommissioned lighthouse that still operates. It is on an island that is a short 8-10 minute boat ride from the Cutler Town boat ramp. Terry, the keeper in residence, is a wealth of knowledge in the lighthouse and community. Why? Because he operated the lighthouse for the Coast Guard over 40 years ago and returned to assist with it after it was decommissioned. How cool is that? Priceless. A small private island, with a huge character, it is amazing to me how this place has been overlooked for so long. If you like lighthouses, and let's be honest who doesn't?, this is one that HAS to be on your true bucket list! Don't look for frills and fancies, this is a Lighthouse. You pack your own cooking and drinking water and bring food for your stay, but you can grill, use the full kitchen (yes there is electricity) and can shower. Most important though, you can climb the light and view it from the outside deck (recently repainted). It is amazing! There are trails and wildlife on the island. It is nature with privacy, beauty, and a lighthouse that is incredible!

Upstairs there was an exhibit on the historical training of oxen and more quilts for sale. 5. Outside of this tiny lighthouse is the most beautiful view and picnic tables. 6. Gilbert's Cove Lighthouse is at the end of a one-mile gravel road just off Highway 101, and it is…read morewell worth a visit. The square keeper's house with the red lantern atop was built in 1904 and was elevated 40 feet above all water approaches (it overlooks St. Mary's Bay). Members of the same family oversaw the light until 1965, and it fell into disrepair for years following. Residents of the area came to the rescue, and the lighthouse was designed a Provincial Heritage Property in 1991. It is easily accessible now and fun to see. There are two small floors with historical information, gifts and souvenirs (some gorgeous handmade quilts, too!) and a tiny kitchen serving tea and cookies. A steep ladder leads up to the light which offers a grand view into the bay. There's a picnic area outside and a parking lot, and there is free access to a nearby beach. It's free, donations accepted, and open 10-4 daily from mid-June through September.

The church took 32 years to build starting in 1910, requiring more than 8,000 blocks of Nova Scotian granite. Apparently, it is not in very good condition now. Its future seems to be unknown; we heard of conversations about demolishing it (what a shame!) and other talk about large donations to keep it up. Sorry we couldn't see more of it.

NOT IMPRESSED... as I never got to see it…read more The only reason it gets a star is because it is cool to drive across the sea floor at low tide. So, this place is only open based on the tides. There are days it is only open for a few hours. There is a chart for their hours, today they are actually open from 1030 to 330. More than 3hours, unfounded I tell ya! I had a day picked out last week to go on to the island where I had plenty of time for seeing and picnicking... I got to the gate CASH ONLY. So I turned back and returned to town to get cash from the ATM... the only town bank would not accept a US card! I never got to see this place due to CASH ONLY and a bank that wouldn't accept US bank cards! I also have been told, any place that is CASH ONLY in Canada is possibly shady due to businesses avoiding tax laws. Places like this that only accept cash have the potential of turning people away like myself... If you don't take plastic, you don't get my business! The place looks neat online... but no plastic, no business... PS: the website says nothing about CASH ONLY

This is my second time here in two years, and I have to say the growth has been moderate, not explosive and I like it. The mustard shop is here, the candy shop is here, there aren't any really tacky souvenir stores but there are some really nice artists to be found at different places. I've promised myself that next time I'm in Eastport, I'm going to walk into the resident part of town, and see the architecture, the houses and the streets and get a solid feel for the vibe here. Walking around the growing "tourist" area- it's nice. People here are friendly and it's a really welcome itinerary stop for me. I hope to be back soon - I want a lobster roll from the fireman food truck on the dock!

This small concrete reinforced bridge spans the Machias River in East Machias. It carries US-1…read more Named after William Pope, it was privately financed by three of his descendants and his seven sons who were early settlers and entrepreneurs of East Machias. In 1902, it was the first bridge to be constructed of reinforced concrete and is believed to be the oldest concrete bridge of any type still in use in Maine. A three-arch, closed spandrel structure, it is the work of Leonard Metcalf, a preeminent civil engineer and bridge designer. It is the fourth bridge in this location to cross the East Machias River. There is a small parking area on the west side of the bridge where the Sunrise Trail follows the course of the river. Mill Memorial Park (which we did not visit) is on the east side, downstream from the bridge. It is a very pretty bridge and at this time of the year, some of the snowmelt is making for a lovely rush of rapids under the bridge and through the rocks. Stop by for a picture, as we did.
