It was often joked when I was a student at the Ateneo Law School a few years back that it didn't matter that the school had no clinic (or we simply did not know where it is located); what mattered was that the school had a chapel. Surely any distress, physical or otherwise, could be prayed away,
Kidding aside, the school's chapel was indeed an important fixture not only in the Ateneo Professional Schools Building (where the law school is housed) but in the community of Bel-Air and Rockwell. Named after Saint Thomas More, the chapel holds regular Masses that are open even to non-students. Located at the Ground Floor of the school, the chapel's walls are made of glass, and outside, the view is of the tranquil (yes, despite the traffic) Rockwell Drive.
I could never forget the days I would attend Masses officiated by the great constitutionalist, professor, and priest, Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ, who, we affectionately call Fr. B. Did you know that in the same way that he hates long answers to his Constitutional Law exams, he also seemed to hate long ceremonies? The shortest Mass he officiated by my count lasted a total of 19 minutes!
I continue to hold fond memories of my times spent just sitting in that Chapel, often empty during the day. Solemn, silent, and serene, it is a perfect venue for prayer, reflection, and conversations with the Almighty. read more
